A Day of Fire and Farm Life

Today was a symphony of contrasts, a dance between the raw, untamed energy of Iceland’s geothermal heart and the gentle, nurturing embrace of its farmlands. It's amazing how much the earth can surprise you in a single day, and I'm excited to share my experiences.

Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Kvika Kaffi. It's conveniently located near the Mývatn Nature Baths, and although we weren't planning on a dip today, we figured it would be a good place to fuel up before our adventures. Liam went for the classic Icelandic meat soup, while I opted for smoked trout on rye bread. The rye bread was a standout – slightly sweet and crumbly, it perfectly complemented the smoky, savory trout. Fuelled by our delicious breakfast, we set off for our first stop: Námafjall Hverir Viewpoint.

Námafjall Hverir: A Martian Landscape

As we approached Námafjall Hverir, the landscape transformed into something otherworldly. The ground was a canvas of vibrant colors – yellows, reds, and browns – all swirling together in a surreal mosaic. Steam billowed from fumaroles, and bubbling mud pots gurgled ominously. The air was thick with the unmistakable scent of sulfur, a constant reminder of the powerful forces at play beneath our feet.

I've always been drawn to landscapes that feel like they belong on another planet, and Námafjall Hverir certainly delivered. It was easy to see why American astronauts used Iceland as a training ground for moon missions. As I wandered through the geothermal area, camera in hand, I felt like I was exploring the surface of Mars. The stark, barren terrain, the intense colors, and the ever-present steam created an atmosphere of both beauty and danger.

Liam, ever the pragmatist, was more concerned about the mud. He'd read online about the tenacious clay that clings to everything, and he was determined to avoid getting it on his hiking boots. Despite his best efforts, though, the mud found its way onto his soles, and soon he was sporting a pair of rather stylish, albeit unintentional, mud platforms.

We followed the small hiking trail that led up to Námaskarð pass and Námafjall mountain. The view from the top was breathtaking. From this vantage point, we could see the vast expanse of the geothermal area, stretching out like a wound in the earth. The wind whipped around us, carrying the scent of sulfur and the sound of bubbling mud. I snapped photo after photo, trying to capture the raw beauty of this extraordinary place.

I couldn’t help but think about the environmental concerns surrounding the geothermal power plant nearby. While I appreciate the need for sustainable energy, I also worry about the impact on this delicate ecosystem. It’s a constant balancing act, trying to harness the power of nature without destroying its beauty.

The earth has music for those who listen.

After our Martian excursion, we were both ravenous. We decided to grab a quick lunch at Fish and Chips Lake Mývatn. The restaurant is known for its crispy, fresh fish and golden fries, and it certainly lived up to its reputation. We shared an order of cod and chips, and it was the perfect comfort food after our chilly morning at Námafjall Hverir.

The batter was light and crispy, the fish was flaky and moist, and the fries were perfectly salted. We devoured every last bite, savoring the simple, satisfying flavors. The restaurant itself was cozy and welcoming, with charming décor that reflected the local culture. I can see why this place is a favorite among both locals and tourists.

Our final stop for the day was Vogafjós Farm Resort, and it was a complete contrast to the geothermal landscapes we'd explored earlier. Vogafjós is a family-run farm and guesthouse that offers a unique glimpse into Icelandic farm life. The resort is located on the eastern shore of Lake Mývatn, surrounded by lava rocks and birch trees. As we drove up to the farm, we were greeted by the sight of grazing sheep and the sound of mooing cows. It was a welcome change from the stark, barren landscapes of Námafjall Hverir.

The resort has a restaurant located right next to the cowshed. Yes, you read that right. You can enjoy your meal while watching the cows being milked through a glass window. It's a quirky, charming experience that I won't soon forget. Liam, who grew up in Dublin, found the whole thing utterly fascinating. He peppered the staff with questions about the farm, the cows, and the cheese-making process.

We started our visit with a tour of the farm. We met the cows, petted the calves, and even tried some fresh milk straight from the source. It was surprisingly delicious – creamy, rich, and unlike anything I've ever tasted. The staff was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, and they were happy to share their passion for farming and sustainable living.

After our farm tour, we settled in for dinner at the Vogafjós Restaurant. The menu featured a variety of homemade delicacies, all made with fresh, local ingredients. We started with the smoked trout, which was delicate and flavorful. For our main courses, Liam ordered the lamb shanks, while I opted for the beef burger. Both dishes were cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. And of course, we had to try the homemade Geysir bread, baked in their underground bakery. It was dense, moist, and slightly sweet, with a hint of geothermal warmth.

As we ate, we watched the cows being milked through the glass window. It was a surreal but strangely comforting experience. There's something incredibly grounding about watching these gentle creatures go about their daily routine, while we enjoyed the fruits (or rather, the dairy) of their labor.

Later, we retreated to the bar at Fosshotel Mývatn for a nightcap. Discover the stunning natural beauty and warm hospitality at Fosshotel Mývatn, your ultimate Icelandic escape surrounded by breathtaking landscapes.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm struck by the incredible diversity of the Mývatn region. It's a place where fire and ice, earth and water, come together in a breathtaking display of natural beauty. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
