Beneath the Surface
Today was a day of contrasts, from the soothing warmth of geothermal waters to the stark, almost lunar landscapes of volcanic formations. It felt like peeling back layers of the earth itself, each revealing a new facet of Iceland's raw beauty. Liam and I set out early, eager to experience all that the Myvatn region had to offer.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Gamli Bærinn. The cozy atmosphere was just what we needed to fuel up for a day of exploration. I opted for their famous meat soup, a delicately earthy concoction that warmed me from the inside out, while Liam enjoyed the soup of the day, a creamy mushroom delight. The self-serve soup bar was a charming touch, and the home-baked bread was simply divine. It's these little gems of culinary delight that make traveling so rewarding. After breakfast, our first stop was the Forest Lagoon, a geothermal spa nestled in the Vaðlaskógur forest near Akureyri. The drive there was scenic, and the anticipation of soaking in the warm waters grew with each passing mile.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found not in conquering mountains, but in surrendering to the simple joys of nature's embrace.
As we arrived at the Forest Lagoon, the crisp air was filled with the scent of pine. The lagoon itself was a marvel, blending seamlessly with the surrounding woodland. The geothermal water, sourced from deep within the earth, was wonderfully soothing. Liam and I spent a blissful couple of hours alternating between the warm pools, the Finnish sauna, and the bracing cold tub. The swim-up bars were a fun addition, and I couldn't resist trying a strawberry margarita, which was as delicious as it was refreshing. The whole experience felt incredibly secluded, a world away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Leaving the Forest Lagoon, we felt rejuvenated and ready for our next adventure: Skútustaðagígar. These pseudocraters, located on the southern shores of Lake Myvatn, are a geological wonder. Formed around 2,300 years ago when hot lava flowed over wetlands, they resemble true volcanic craters but are not connected to a magma chamber. As we walked among these fascinating landforms, I couldn't help but feel like we were on another planet. The landscape was dotted with craters, each surrounded by lush greenery. It was a photographer's dream, and I spent hours capturing the unique formations from every angle. Liam, ever the patient companion, entertained himself with birdwatching, pointing out various duck species that nest in the area. The well-maintained walking paths made it easy to explore the area, and the panoramic views of Lake Myvatn were simply breathtaking.

For lunch, we stopped at Bistro Sel & Pizza in Skútustaðir. This charming restaurant is known for its diverse menu, featuring both local and international dishes. Liam opted for the traditional Icelandic lamb, while I decided to try their famous trout pizza. The flavors were incredible, and the portions were generous. The staff was friendly and welcoming, making us feel right at home. It was the perfect spot to relax and refuel after our exploration of the pseudocraters. With our bellies full and spirits high, we ventured on to the Myvatn Geothermal Area. This area is a testament to Iceland's volcanic activity, with steam vents, geothermal pools, and bubbling mud pots. The smell of sulfur filled the air, adding to the otherworldly atmosphere. We explored the Hverir geothermal fields, where the landscape was sparse and bare, making us feel like we were visiting another planet. The steam vents hissed and roared, and the mud pools bubbled and gurgled. It was a truly surreal experience, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the power of nature.

As the day drew to a close, we headed to Eldey Restaurant for dinner. This restaurant, located in Hotel Laxá, is known for its authentic Icelandic cuisine and stunning views of Lake Myvatn. We both opted for the Arctic char, a local specialty, and it was absolutely delicious. The fish was perfectly cooked, and the flavors were rich and complex. The service was impeccable, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and adventure. After dinner, we decided to check out Götubarinn, a local bar in Akureyri. It was a cozy spot with a vintage atmosphere, and we enjoyed a couple of drinks while listening to live music. It was a great way to experience the local culture and unwind after a long day. As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the raw beauty and geological wonders of the Myvatn region. From the soothing warmth of the Forest Lagoon to the stark landscapes of Skútustaðagígar and the bubbling mud pots of the Myvatn Geothermal Area, each experience was unique and unforgettable. And as we prepare for tomorrow's adventures, I can't help but wonder what other hidden gems this magical island has in store for us. Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Námafjall Hverir Viewpoint, Visit Mývatn, and Vogafjós Farm Resort, I am really looking forward to seeing the farm resort.
Tonight, I'm especially grateful for Liam's companionship. His enthusiasm for nature and his unwavering patience make him the perfect travel partner. As we sat by the window tonight, sipping on hot cocoa, the Northern Lights began to dance across the sky. It was a magical moment, a perfect ending to a perfect day. It's moments like these that remind me why I love to travel, to explore, and to share my experiences with you all. Until tomorrow, takk fyrir (thank you) from Iceland!
