Island Farewells

As our Ishigaki adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we’ve had. Today was all about soaking in the last bits of island life, from cultural immersion to beachside relaxation, and savoring the unique flavors of Ishigaki one last time. I'm so grateful to have shared this journey with Liam, whose enthusiasm for exploration matches my own. I'm excited to share this last day with you all!

Our final day began with a delightful breakfast at Coral terrace Ishigakijima Restaurant Plumeria. The elegant Balinese-Mediterranean interior created a serene atmosphere. We savored the exquisite fusion cuisine, a blend of European and South American influences crafted with local products. It was a sublime culinary experience, with the kind staff adding to the charm. I enjoyed the fusion of tastes and textures, a memorable way to start our last day.

After breakfast, Liam and I ventured to Ishigaki Yaima Village, a living museum showcasing traditional Ryukyu culture. Wandering through the village felt like stepping back in time, with its faithfully recreated Yaeyama houses and vibrant cultural displays. The sound of the sanshin echoed through the village, adding a musical backdrop to our exploration. We even had the chance to see squirrel monkeys and learn about the local wildlife. It was fascinating to see the traditional architecture and get a glimpse into the daily life of old Okinawa. I was particularly interested in the Uminchu (Fisherman) house, which displayed fishing tools and sea turtle shells. The park wasn't too big, and we enjoyed a comfortable walk around it.

For lunch, we headed to Ikkyu Ramen, a local favorite known for its Okinawan soba noodles. The warm atmosphere and friendly service made us feel right at home. We savored the rich flavors of the traditional ramen dishes, each prepared with fresh ingredients and time-honored techniques. The affordability of the menu made it even more accessible. It was a delightful experience dining alongside locals, adding an authentic touch to our cultural immersion. Liam particularly enjoyed the goat soba, a local specialty, while I opted for a classic ramen bowl. It was the perfect fuel for our afternoon adventure.

Our next stop was Fusaki Beach, known for its stunning sunsets. Although it was daytime, the beach was still beautiful, with clear blue waters and a gentle breeze. We took a leisurely stroll along the shore, enjoying the warm October weather. The sea temperature was perfect for swimming, so we took a refreshing dip in the ocean. I spent some time sunbathing, soaking up the last rays of Ishigaki sunshine. Liam, ever the adventurer, tried his hand at stand-up paddleboarding. Fusaki Beach in October is comfortable, with average maximum temperatures of 28°C (82°F).

Before dinner, we stopped by CACAO MARKET by MarieBelle Ishigaki, a chocolate lover's paradise. The shop was filled with a sweet aroma, and the displays of chocolates were simply irresistible. We sampled a few different flavors and ended up buying a box of assorted chocolates to take home as souvenirs. It was a delightful treat and a perfect way to satisfy my sweet tooth.

For our final dinner in Ishigaki, we chose Yaeyama Zenfu Kokkara, a restaurant specializing in authentic Okinawan cuisine. The charming ambiance and beautiful decor made us feel right at home. We savored rare dishes exclusive to the Yaeyama Islands, experiencing the rich flavors of the region. The warm hospitality of the staff added to the overall experience.
