Beneath the Surface and Beyond

Today was a symphony of blues and greens, a vibrant dance between the underwater world and the lush landscapes of Masoala. It’s hard to believe this incredible journey is nearing its end, but we're soaking up every last drop of Malagasy magic. Today felt like a culmination of everything we've experienced so far—the raw beauty of nature, the warmth of the local people, and the sheer joy of discovery.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Marais Restaurant Madagascar. Though technically located in Antananarivo, they seem to have a pop-up location here. I opted for a traditional Malagasy breakfast of *vary amin'anana* (rice with greens) which was delicious. Liam, ever the adventurous one, tried the local take on eggs benedict, declaring it a flavorful start to the day. Fuelled up, we were ready to explore the wonders of Alamaitso Marine Reserve.

The boat ride to the reserve was an experience in itself. The turquoise water sparkled under the morning sun, and the air was filled with the salty scent of the ocean. We passed small fishing boats, their colorful sails billowing in the breeze, and I couldn't resist snapping a few photos. The fishermen waved back, their smiles as bright as the tropical sun. It's moments like these that remind me why I love to travel—the chance to connect with people and cultures so different from my own.

Once we arrived at Alamaitso, I was eager to plunge into the depths. Donning my scuba gear, I felt that familiar thrill of anticipation. Liam, ever the supportive husband, helped me check my equipment, his green eyes sparkling with excitement. We descended into an underwater paradise, a kaleidoscope of coral reefs teeming with marine life. Schools of colorful fish darted around us, their scales shimmering in the sunlight. I spotted a sea turtle gracefully gliding through the water, its ancient eyes holding a wisdom that only centuries of ocean life can bestow.

I was so engrossed in capturing the beauty around me, I almost missed the reef shark gracefully swimming by. It was a thrilling reminder of the wildness that still exists in our world. Liam and I exchanged excited glances, both of us humbled by the power and majesty of nature. As a wildlife photographer, these are the moments I live for – the chance to witness and document the untamed beauty of our planet.

The ocean stirs the heart, inspires the imagination and brings eternal joy.

After our dive, we spent some time snorkeling closer to the surface, exploring the shallower reefs. The colors were even more vibrant here, and I was mesmerized by the intricate patterns of the coral. I even spotted a few nudibranchs, those tiny, flamboyant sea slugs that are the jewels of the ocean. Liam, with his keen eye, pointed out a camouflaged scorpionfish, perfectly blending in with the rocks. It's amazing how much you can miss if you're not paying attention.

Back on the boat, we savored a simple lunch of fresh fruit and sandwiches, the taste enhanced by the salty air and the stunning views. As we cruised back towards the mainland, I reflected on the incredible biodiversity of Masoala National Park, both above and below the water. It's a true treasure, a place that deserves our utmost respect and protection.

Next on our agenda was Saikanosin' Masoala, the peninsula that forms a significant part of the park.

We hiked through a section of its lush rainforest, marveling at the towering trees and the symphony of sounds. The air was thick with humidity, and the scent of damp earth and exotic flowers filled our nostrils. We spotted several species of lemurs, including the iconic red ruffed lemur, their calls echoing through the forest. I managed to capture a few decent shots, but it's always a challenge in the dim light of the rainforest.

After our jungle trek, we were famished. We headed to Aero Pizza for lunch.

I know, pizza in Madagascar sounds a bit odd, but after days of rice, we were craving something different. Plus, I had heard great things about their wood-fired pizzas. Liam and I shared a *quatre fromage* and a local specialty with zebu beef and wild pepper. Both were surprisingly delicious. It was a welcome change of pace, and the perfect fuel for the rest of our day.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, we found ourselves at La Terrasse, a local bar known for its lively atmosphere and potent cocktails.

We settled into a cozy corner, ordered a couple of *rhum arrangé* (spiced rum), and watched the world go by. The bar was filled with a mix of locals and tourists, all enjoying the laid-back vibe and the warm tropical air. Liam and I chatted about our day, reminiscing about the incredible sights and experiences we had shared.

For dinner, we decided to treat ourselves to a meal at Sakamanga Hôtel.

I had read about their restaurant, which serves a mix of French and Malagasy cuisine. The ambiance was lovely, with soft lighting and traditional music playing in the background. Liam ordered the *canard à la vanille* (duck with vanilla sauce), while I opted for the *poisson grillé* (grilled fish) with a side of *romazava* (a traditional Malagasy broth with greens and meat). Both dishes were exquisitely prepared and bursting with flavor.

As we savored our meal, we reflected on our incredible journey through Masoala National Park. It's a place of unparalleled beauty and biodiversity, a true gem of Madagascar. I feel so grateful to have had the opportunity to experience its wonders, to capture its essence through my lens.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, it's our final day in Madagascar, and we'll be heading to Antalaha to explore its vanilla plantations and relax on its beautiful beaches. I am looking forward to that, but I will forever remember my time in Masoala. It’s a place that has touched my soul and ignited my passion for wildlife photography even further. I am so grateful to have shared these experiences with Liam.

Before drifting off to sleep, I made a mental note to stock up on vanilla extract in Antalaha – a little piece of Madagascar to take back home to Banff. And maybe, just maybe, convince Liam to try knitting a traditional Norwegian pattern with a Malagasy twist.
