Discover the raw beauty of Iceland's Skaftafell as we hike to Svartifoss and explore the majestic Skaftafell Glacier with family.
Day 2: Embracing Iceland's Wild Side
The second day of our Icelandic adventure in Skaftafell was nothing short of spectacular. After a hearty breakfast, we set out to explore the park's most iconic landmarks. I couldn't wait to immerse myself in the dramatic landscapes and share the experience with Liam and the family. Today was all about waterfalls and glaciers, a true testament to Iceland's diverse natural beauty.
Our day began with a filling breakfast at Cafe Vatnajökull. It’s a cozy little spot nestled at the foot of Vatnajökull glacier. It was the perfect way to start our day, fueling up with warm drinks and pastries before heading out into the crisp Icelandic air. The cafe itself was charming, filled with plants and offering views that made us eager to start our explorations. It was a bit chilly, with temperatures hovering around 3°C (37°F), but the excitement kept us warm.

Sometimes, the most breathtaking views are those that require a little effort to reach.
Fueled and ready, our first stop was Svartifoss. The hike to the waterfall was invigorating. The trail was a bit steep in places, but totally manageable. Along the way, we passed two other beautiful waterfalls, Hundafoss and Magnúsarfoss, each with its own unique charm. The landscape was rugged and raw, and I found myself stopping frequently to capture the views with my camera. Liam, ever the supportive husband, helped me carry my gear, and we both marveled at the stunning scenery.
Discover the breathtaking beauty of Svartifoss, Iceland's iconic waterfall framed by unique basalt columns in Vatnajökull National Park.
As we approached Svartifoss, the basalt columns came into view, framing the waterfall in a way that seemed almost otherworldly. The contrast between the dark columns and the cascading water was striking, making it a photographer's dream. I spent a good amount of time trying to capture the perfect shot, playing with different angles and settings. The name Svartifoss translates to “Black Falls,” which is fitting considering the dark appearance of the rock. I can see why it is one of the top attractions in Southeast Iceland!
After thoroughly enjoying Svartifoss, we took a moment to simply soak in the atmosphere. There’s something incredibly peaceful about being surrounded by such powerful natural beauty. We continued our hike, exploring the surrounding trails and taking in the panoramic views of Skaftafell. The crisp air and stunning landscapes made me feel so alive and connected to nature. I even spotted some Arctic wildlife; they were so cute!
For lunch, we stopped at Veitingasala Restaurant, Shop, And Gas. It might seem like an odd combination, but it was a convenient spot to grab a quick bite. We enjoyed some simple, hearty fare that warmed us up and gave us the energy we needed for the rest of the day’s adventures. It’s amazing how even a simple meal can taste so good when you’re surrounded by such incredible scenery.

Next on our itinerary was the Skaftafell Glacier. As someone passionate about glaciology, I was particularly excited about this part of the day. We drove to a safe access point and prepared for a closer look at these icy giants. The sheer scale of the glacier was awe-inspiring. The glacier is an outlet glacier that emanates from Vatnajökull glacier. We spent time simply admiring the glacier from a distance, capturing its beauty with our cameras. The blue crevasses and icy ridges were mesmerizing, and I felt a deep sense of respect for the power and fragility of these natural wonders.

Unfortunately, we weren’t able to do a full-on glacier hike due to time constraints and safety considerations, but even seeing it from a distance was an unforgettable experience. I made a mental note to come back and do a guided glacier walk on our next visit. I had forgotten to pack an extra memory card for my camera, so I had to be extra careful with the photos I was taking!
As the day drew to a close, we headed to Kirkjubæjarklaustur for dinner at Systrakaffi. This family-run restaurant was the perfect place to unwind after a day of hiking and exploring. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the menu offered a variety of delicious options. I opted for the local Arctic char, which was cooked to perfection. Liam enjoyed a hearty pizza, and we both savored the flavors of Iceland while reminiscing about our day’s adventures.

After dinner, we briefly considered stopping by Skúli Craft Bar for a nightcap. However, we decided to head back to our accommodation to rest up for tomorrow’s adventures. The long days and physical activity were starting to catch up with us, and we knew we needed to be well-rested for another day of exploring Skaftafell.

Tomorrow, we plan to hike the Svartifoss Trail again to get a different perspective and explore Svínafellsjökull Glacier. I’m also looking forward to visiting Hnappavellir, known for its stunning views. We’ll start the day with breakfast at Hvönn Restaurant and grab lunch at Veitingasala again for convenience. In the evening, we’ll try Skaftfell Bistro for dinner and maybe stop by Jungle Cocktail Bar for a relaxing drink.
Today was a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation, showcasing the best of Skaftafell’s natural beauty. From the dramatic basalt columns of Svartifoss to the icy expanse of Skaftafell Glacier, every moment was filled with wonder and awe. Sharing these experiences with Liam and the family made it even more special, creating memories that we will cherish for a lifetime. As we settle in for the night, I can’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore this incredible corner of the world. The beauty of Iceland is truly something to behold, and I’m excited to see what tomorrow brings.
