Embark on a journey through Skaftafell's breathtaking landscapes, from the cascading Svartifoss to the majestic Svínafellsjökull Glacier.
Iceland's Wild Heart: A Day in Skaftafell
Today was a day of pure Icelandic magic! We ventured deep into Skaftafell, a region that truly showcases the raw, untamed beauty of this incredible country. It felt like stepping into a postcard, with every turn revealing another breathtaking vista. The crisp air, the sound of rushing water, and the imposing presence of glaciers – it was an experience that invigorated the soul and reminded me why I fell in love with wildlife photography in the first place. Liam was in his element too, constantly pointing out unique geological formations and sharing fascinating facts about the area.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Hvönn Restaurant. The cozy atmosphere and traditional Icelandic fare were the perfect way to fuel up for our adventures. I opted for the Skyr with berries and Liam enjoyed the hearty fish stew. It's always a treat to start the day with a taste of local cuisine, and Hvönn certainly didn't disappoint.
With our bellies full and our spirits high, we set off for the Svartifoss Trail. The hike to Svartifoss, also known as the Black Falls, was absolutely mesmerizing. The trail wound its way through lush greenery, a stark contrast to the icy landscapes that Iceland is often associated with. The April air was crisp, with a hint of moisture that made the foliage glisten. I couldn’t help but think of Norway and my childhood spent hiking through similar landscapes near Kongsvinger. The familiar scent of damp earth and pine needles brought back a flood of fond memories.
As we approached the waterfall, the sound of cascading water grew louder, building anticipation for the grand reveal. And it was indeed a sight to behold! Svartifoss plunges dramatically over a cliff framed by striking basalt columns, creating a scene that felt both powerful and serene. The hexagonal basalt columns, formed by slow cooling lava, were truly impressive. I could see how these natural formations have inspired Icelandic architects, like the Hallgrímskirkja church in Reykjavík. I spent ages snapping photos from every possible angle, trying to capture the essence of this natural wonder. Liam, ever the patient one, waited for me, occasionally pointing out interesting details I might have missed.

Sometimes, the most profound beauty lies in the unexpected contrasts – the delicate dance between fire and ice, the vibrant green against the stark black, the gentle flow amidst the unyielding stone.
After thoroughly soaking in the beauty of Svartifoss, we continued our journey towards Svínafellsjökull Glacier. The drive itself was an adventure, with the landscape transforming into a rugged, otherworldly terrain. Svínafellsjökull, known as the 'pig hill glacier', has gained fame for its appearances in “Game of Thrones,” but its beauty is captivating even without the Hollywood connection.
However, upon arrival, a sense of caution washed over us. We learned about the potential for rockslides in the area, a stark reminder of the powerful forces at play in this dynamic landscape. The Icelandic Meteorological Office continues to monitor the area closely, and I read the recommendation that independent tourists should limit their exposure to the risk. It was a sobering moment, highlighting the importance of respecting nature's power and heeding safety advice. While it was disappointing not to get as close as we'd hoped, we admired the glacier from a safe distance, capturing its majestic presence in our photos.

Next on our itinerary was Hnappavellir, a renowned rock climbing area. Though neither Liam nor I are experienced climbers, we were drawn to the dramatic cliffs and the challenge they presented. April isn't necessarily the best time for climbing, with conditions being more favorable in the summer months, but Hnappavellir was still amazing. We watched in awe as skilled climbers scaled the basalt cliffs, their movements fluid and graceful against the rugged backdrop. The area is off-limits for regular tourists, but as climbers we could access it and the quaint hut called Tóftin.

It was inspiring to witness their determination and skill, a testament to the human spirit's ability to conquer even the most daunting challenges. I made a mental note to perhaps take a climbing course back in Banff – it certainly looked like an incredible way to connect with nature and push one's physical limits. We paid the required fee to the Icelandic Bolting Fund, ensuring that we were contributing to the maintenance of the climbing routes and facilities.
Before heading back, we made a quick stop at the KIDKA Wool Factory Shop. As someone who appreciates quality craftsmanship and sustainable materials, I was eager to see their collection of Icelandic wool clothing. The shop was a treasure trove of cozy sweaters, hats, and scarves, all made from 100% Icelandic wool. We picked up a few souvenirs, including a beautiful hand-knitted scarf for my mother and a warm hat for Liam. Knowing that we were supporting a local business and purchasing ethically made products made the experience even more rewarding.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to treat ourselves to dinner at Skaftfell Bistro. After a day of hiking and exploring, we were both ravenous. Bistro Skaftfell was in Seydisfjordur. We enjoyed pizzas in the cozy atmosphere of the Bistro. The Skaftfell Bistro is known for blending art and culinary delights. It has a cozy library designed by artist Bjorn Roth, filled with artist books. I had read that it was one of the best places to eat in Seydisfjordur, so we booked a table. I tried the vegan pizza, and Liam went for one with local Icelandic lamb. The food was delicious, the service was friendly, and the ambiance was perfect for a relaxing evening.

Our final stop of the day was at the Jungle Cocktail Bar. Now, I know what you're thinking – a tropical-themed bar in the middle of Iceland? But we were intrigued, and it turned out to be a surprisingly delightful experience. The bar was tucked away in downtown Reykjavík, and it was a cozy place. I'm not much of a cocktail drinker, but Liam enjoyed the beer on draft. It was the perfect way to end our day, reminiscing about our adventures and planning for the days ahead.

Reflecting on the day, I am struck by the incredible diversity of Skaftafell. From the cascading waters of Svartifoss to the icy expanse of Svínafellsjökull Glacier, this region is a microcosm of Iceland's natural wonders. It's a place where you can witness the power of nature up close, feel the thrill of adventure, and connect with the land on a deeper level. And tomorrow, we're off to Jökulsárlón and Fjallsárlón Iceberg Boat Tours, so more glacial adventures await! It's going to be an early start, but I can't wait to see those icebergs up close.
As we drove back to our accommodation, the sky was painted with hues of orange and purple, a breathtaking farewell to another unforgettable day in Iceland. I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience this incredible country with my loved ones, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
I am so glad I remembered to bring my camera and all my photography gear, even though I forgot the portable phone charger and an extra memory card for the camera. I will make sure to buy these tomorrow.
Join us on a 7-day adventure through Skaftafell's stunning glaciers and waterfalls, embracing the wild beauty of Iceland's natural wonders.
