Solo Expedition to Iceland's Hornstrandir Nature Reserve
Day 3: Chasing Waterfalls and Icelandic Knitwear in the Westfjords
An immersive day exploring Möngufoss waterfall, savoring local cuisine, and discovering cozy Icelandic knitwear in Ísafjörður.
A Day of Westfjords Wonders
The crisp Icelandic air filled my lungs as I set out for another day of adventure in the Westfjords. Today promised a blend of natural beauty, local flavors, and cultural immersion, a combination that always excites me. I was eager to explore more of this remote region and capture its essence through my lens.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Hópið in Tálknafjörður. The cozy atmosphere and the promise of traditional Icelandic fare drew me in. I opted for a classic breakfast plate, fueling up for the day ahead with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. It's amazing how a simple meal can taste so much better when you know it comes from the surrounding area. I made sure to try their seafood, which was delicious.
With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off to find Möngufoss, also known as Hlíðarhús, a waterfall tucked away from the main tourist trails. The drive itself was a treat, with dramatic landscapes unfolding around every bend. Jagged cliffs met the sea, and the vast expanse of the North Atlantic stretched out before me. I had to drive to the end of road 635. The last few kilometers were on a gravel road, which my little rental car handled surprisingly well.
Reaching the trailhead, I embarked on a roughly 5km hike along the coast. The path was rugged but manageable, and the views were simply breathtaking. The air was filled with the sound of seabirds, and the scent of wildflowers added a touch of sweetness to the salty breeze. Although the sun was shining, the wind was strong, reminding me that even in May, Iceland's weather can be unpredictable. I was glad I had packed layers! The average temperature in May is 5°C / 41F, so it's important to be prepared.
Finally, after about an hour of hiking, I reached Möngufoss. The waterfall cascaded down from a height of approximately 60 meters, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. The water plunged into a small pool below, sending up a fine mist that sparkled in the sunlight. I spent a long time simply admiring the scene, feeling a sense of awe at the power and beauty of nature. I took out my camera and started snapping photos, trying to capture the essence of this hidden gem.

In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.
After thoroughly enjoying Möngufoss, I made my way back to Ísafjörður, the largest settlement in the Westfjords. It was time for lunch, and I decided to try Faktorshus in Haestikaupstadur. I had read mixed reviews, but I was curious to experience it for myself. The restaurant has a charming atmosphere and offers views of the surrounding fjords. I opted for a traditional Icelandic lamb dish, eager to taste the local flavors.
With my appetite satisfied, I decided to explore Ísafjörður itself. The town has a charming, laid-back vibe, with colorful houses and a bustling harbor. I stumbled upon Ívaf, a knitwear shop that caught my eye. As someone who enjoys knitting traditional Norwegian patterns, I was immediately drawn to the intricate designs and the high-quality Icelandic wool. The store was filled with sweaters, hats, and scarves, all showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Iceland. The use of wool ensures that each piece provides warmth and comfort against the island's cool climate. I ended up buying a beautiful hand-knitted hat as a souvenir, a tangible reminder of my time in the Westfjords.

Before dinner, I made sure to stop by Logn, restaurant & bar, located in Hótel Ísafjörður - Torg. I had heard that they have a great selection of wine, cocktails, and interesting gin drinks. I enjoyed a refreshing drink in their cozy lounge area, taking advantage of their happy hour.
For dinner, I returned to Logn, restaurant & bar, as I was intrigued by their varied menu. The restaurant opened in February 2023 and has quickly become a local favorite. I decided to try one of their seafood dishes, eager to taste the fresh flavors of the North Atlantic. The meal was delicious, and the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting.
As the day drew to a close, I reflected on my experiences. From the stunning beauty of Möngufoss to the cozy charm of Ísafjörður, today had been a true immersion into the heart of the Westfjords. I felt grateful for the opportunity to explore this remote and remarkable region, capturing its essence through my lens and creating memories that would last a lifetime.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit Djúpavík and Stórurðarlundur [places from tomorrow's itinerary]. I'm excited to see what other hidden gems this region has to offer. Maybe Liam would enjoy this place as well, I should bring him here one day.
I am also thinking about the essentials I forgot to pack: insect repellent and a portable water filter. I will need to buy them in Reykjavik before heading back to Banff. Good thing that Ívaf is committed to sustainability, sourcing materials responsibly and supporting local artisans. That is something that I value as well.
Good night from the Westfjords!
