Day 4: Ancient Wonders and Culinary Delights: A Day in the Sacred Valley
Explore the majestic ruins of Ollantaytambo and the fascinating Salt Mines of Maras, followed by exquisite Peruvian cuisine in Cusco.
Echoes of the Incas
Today was a journey through time, a day spent tracing the footsteps of the Incas and savoring the flavors of Peru. From the towering terraces of Ollantaytambo to the shimmering salt pans of Maras, the Sacred Valley unfolded its secrets, leaving me in awe of the ingenuity and resilience of this ancient civilization.
Explore Ollantaytambo, a historical gem in Peru's Sacred Valley, rich in Inca heritage, stunning landscapes, and vibrant local culture.
My day began with an early breakfast at El Tupay Restaurant. The setting was elegant, befitting the hotel's monastic history, and the cappuccino was just the jolt I needed to start the day. From what I observed, El Tupay offers a fusion of international cuisines with a Peruvian twist, and it seemed like a great place to have breakfast. After breakfast, I set off for Ollantaytambo, one of the last Incan strongholds to fall to the Spanish. The drive itself was breathtaking, winding through the mountains with stunning views of the valley below. As we approached Ollantaytambo, the massive terraces carved into the mountainside came into view, a testament to the Incas' mastery of engineering and agriculture.
Exploring Ollantaytambo was like stepping back in time. I imagined what life must have been like centuries ago, when this city was a thriving center of commerce and culture. Climbing the terraces, I was rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The stonework was incredible, with massive blocks fitted together so precisely that not even a knife blade could slip between them. It's amazing how the Incas managed to build such impressive structures without the use of modern tools or machinery.
The stones whisper stories of a civilization that thrived in harmony with the land, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire awe and wonder.
After spending a few hours exploring Ollantaytambo, it was time to head to my next destination: the Salt Mines of Maras. The contrast between the imposing architecture of Ollantaytambo and the delicate beauty of the salt mines was striking. As we approached Maras, the landscape transformed into a patchwork of shimmering white and brown pools, cascading down the hillside like a giant staircase. These salt mines have been in operation since pre-Inca times, and the traditional methods of salt extraction are still used today.

Walking among the salt pans was a surreal experience. The air was crisp and clean, and the silence was broken only by the gentle sound of water flowing through the channels. I watched as local families carefully tended to their individual plots, harvesting the salt crystals that had formed in the shallow pools. The salt is rich in minerals and is known for its distinctive pink hue. I learned that the pink color comes from the minerals and other natural elements in the water that comes from the mountain, including magnesium, calcium, potassium and silicon. Interestingly, there are only four places in the world where salt of this color can be extracted and Maras is one of these spectacular places. I purchased a small bag of the local pink salt, a unique souvenir to remind me of this incredible place.
By afternoon, my stomach was reminding me that it was time for lunch, so I headed back to Cusco and Morena Peruvian Kitchen for lunch. I had read great reviews about it, and I was keen to try some authentic Peruvian cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with colorful decor and a lively atmosphere. For starters, I ordered the ceviche, a classic Peruvian dish of fresh fish marinated in citrus juices, onions, cilantro, and chili peppers. It was zesty, flavorful, and incredibly refreshing. For the main course, I decided to try the lomo saltado, a stir-fry of beef tenderloin, onions, tomatoes, and potatoes, served with rice. The beef was tender and juicy, and the sauce was rich and savory. It was the perfect comfort food after a long day of exploring.
After lunch, I decided to do a little shopping at Real Plaza Cusco. I wanted to pick up a few souvenirs for Liam and Nadia, and I thought this would be a good place to find a variety of options. The mall was modern and well-maintained, with a wide selection of stores, from international brands to local boutiques. I found a beautiful hand-woven scarf for Nadia and a cool t-shirt with a Peruvian design for Liam. I also picked up a few small trinkets for myself, to remind me of my time in Cusco.
For dinner, I decided to try Inka Grill, located in the Plaza de Armas. The restaurant had a prime location in the heart of the city, and I was eager to see what it had to offer. The menu featured a mix of Peruvian and international cuisines, and I decided to go with a traditional Peruvian dish: ají de gallina, a creamy chicken stew made with aji amarillo peppers, walnuts, and cheese, served with rice and potatoes. The stew was rich and flavorful, with a hint of spice, and the chicken was tender and succulent. It was a comforting and satisfying meal, perfect for a chilly evening in Cusco.
As I walked back to the Sonesta Hotel Cusco, I reflected on the day's adventures. I felt grateful for the opportunity to explore the Sacred Valley and to learn about the rich history and culture of the Incas. The towering ruins of Ollantaytambo, the shimmering salt pans of Maras, and the delicious flavors of Peruvian cuisine had all combined to create an unforgettable experience. I was also grateful for the chance to indulge in some retail therapy at Real Plaza Cusco and to find the perfect souvenirs for my loved ones.

I also need to remember to buy a plug adapter for Peruvian outlets, since I forgot to pack one. And maybe I should also pick up an umbrella, just in case it rains. I want to be prepared for anything that comes my way, so that I can make the most of my time in Cusco. I'm so glad that I decided to embark on this solo journey, and I can't wait to see what else Peru has in store for me.
