Whispers of the Past

My first day in Cusco was nothing short of magical. From the moment I stepped off the plane, I was enveloped in an atmosphere thick with history and buzzing with a vibrant energy that only Peru can offer. The air is crisp, the sun is bright, and the spirit of the Incas feels alive in every stone. It's a world away from my cozy life in Kingston, and I couldn't be more thrilled to dive in headfirst.

After settling into the Sonesta Hotel Cusco, which, by the way, is perfectly situated for exploring the city, I decided to embrace the day.

My first stop was Saqsaywaman, a site that had been whispering promises of awe in my ear since I booked this trip. It's hard to describe the sheer scale of the place. The massive stones, fitted together with such precision, are a testament to the Incas' incredible engineering skills. Standing there, high above Cusco, I could almost feel the echoes of the past, the weight of history pressing down with a gentle, reverent hand. I spent hours wandering through the complex, imagining what life must have been like during the Inca Empire. The panoramic views of Cusco were breathtaking, a sprawling tapestry of red-tiled roofs and winding streets nestled in the embrace of the Andes.

Next on my list was Qorikancha, the Temple of the Sun. This sacred site was once the most important temple in the Inca Empire, dedicated to Inti, their sun god. The contrast between the Inca stonework and the Spanish colonial architecture of the Convent of Santo Domingo, which was built on top of the temple, is striking. It's a physical representation of the clash of cultures that shaped modern Peru. Walking through Qorikancha, I learned about the Inca's sophisticated understanding of astronomy and their deep connection to the natural world. The temple was once covered in sheets of gold, and the adjacent courtyard was filled with golden statues. I tried to imagine the splendor, the sheer opulence of it all, a testament to the Inca's reverence for the sun.

For lunch, I ventured to Organika Restaurant, a charming spot known for its organic ingredients and delicious Peruvian-inspired dishes. I opted for the pumpkin ravioli, which was absolutely divine. The pasta was fresh, the filling was flavorful, and the sauce was rich and creamy. It was the perfect fuel for an afternoon of exploring.

In the late afternoon, I indulged in a bit of retail therapy at the Handicraft Center Cusco. Located on Avenida El Sol, this bustling market is a treasure trove of Peruvian crafts, from colorful textiles and alpaca wool clothing to intricate ceramics and jewelry. I spent hours browsing the stalls, chatting with the artisans, and admiring their handiwork. I picked up a few souvenirs for Liam and Nadia, a cozy alpaca scarf for myself, and a vibrant tapestry to brighten up our living room in Kingston. It was fascinating to see the local artisans at work, creating modern crafts inspired by pre-Columbian art. The opening hours are great too, staying open until 8 PM!

As the sun began to set, I made my way to Cicciolina for dinner. This restaurant, recommended by several locals, is housed in a beautiful colonial building and offers a fusion of Italian, Mediterranean, and Peruvian cuisine. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with clusters of sun-dried chili and garlic hanging from the ceilings, and original lamps casting a warm glow. I started with the Andean consommé, a flavorful broth filled with vegetables from the Sacred Valley and garnished with wild herbs and a slice of beef fillet. For my main course, I tried the causa, a traditional Peruvian dish made with yellow potato mash, chili, herbs, and deboned guinea pig confit. It was an adventurous choice, but I'm glad I tried it. The flavors were complex and intriguing, a testament to Peru's culinary creativity.

Before heading back to the hotel, I strolled through the Plaza de Armas, the heart of Cusco. The square was alive with activity, locals and tourists alike milling about, street performers entertaining the crowds, and the illuminated facade of the Cusco Cathedral casting a golden glow over everything. I paused for a moment, taking it all in, feeling grateful for this incredible opportunity to explore a new corner of the world.

Reflecting on the day, I am struck by the incredible blend of cultures that defines Cusco. The Inca legacy is undeniable, visible in the magnificent ruins and the enduring traditions of the local people. But the Spanish colonial influence is also present, woven into the architecture, the religion, and the cuisine. It's a complex and fascinating tapestry, and I'm eager to unravel more of its threads in the days to come.

Tomorrow, I'm venturing into the Sacred Valley, with a visit to Pisac. I've heard whispers of its vibrant market and stunning Inca ruins, and I can't wait to see them for myself. I plan to have breakfast at Mr Soup, lunch at Pachapapa, and dinner at LIMO. I'm also hoping to find some unique textiles at Centro Textil Acllas Cusco. Stay tuned for more adventures from the heart of the Inca Empire!

As I settle into my hotel room for the night, I realize I forgot my plug adapter and umbrella. I will need to buy those tomorrow.

This solo journey is already proving to be an enriching experience. It's a chance to challenge myself, to step outside my comfort zone, and to connect with a culture that is both ancient and vibrant. And who knows, maybe I'll even pick up a few new dance moves to share with my African dance class back in Kingston.

Goodnight from Cusco!

P.S. I almost forgot! This morning for breakfast, I had a wonderful meal at El Jardin - Healthy Food And Coffee. It was so tasty and fresh. I would recommend this spot to anyone looking for healthy options.

P.P.S. There were no local events today, but I've heard that Cusco is always celebrating something. I'll keep my eyes peeled for any festivities during the rest of my trip.
