Day 7: A Day Amidst Ancient Stones and Modern Merriment in Cusco
Wander through Cusco's historic Plaza Mayor, marvel at the Twelve Angled Stone, and savor the city's vibrant culinary scene.
Echoes of the Inca Empire
Today was a beautiful exploration of Cusco's heart, a blend of its ancient soul and vibrant modern life. It's incredible how this city manages to hold onto its history while still buzzing with contemporary energy. Liam would have loved walking around Plaza Mayor, I'm sure we'll come back here together one day.

My day began, as many do here, with a delightful breakfast. Mama Seledonia was the perfect spot to fuel up for a day of exploration. The cozy atmosphere and the promise of authentic Peruvian flavors were too tempting to resist. I savored every bite of my breakfast, a delicious start to what promised to be a day filled with discovery.

First on the agenda was the iconic Plaza Mayor de Cusco, also known as Plaza de Armas. Stepping into the plaza felt like stepping back in time. The grand colonial buildings, remnants of Spanish influence, stood proudly alongside the echoes of the Inca Empire. The history of this place is palpable; it's where Manco Capac is said to have founded the Inca capital, and it later served as the stage for the execution of Tupac Amaru II. The square is the main public space of the town since before its Spanish foundation in 1534.
The rainy season in Cusco is certainly living up to its reputation. The weather was mild, with temperatures ranging from 7°C to 19°C. The humidity was around 65%, but I honestly didn't find it too bad. I was able to walk around in jeans and a jacket all day and not sweat at all. There were brief showers, but they didn't last long. It was actually quite refreshing and created a beautiful atmosphere in the plaza.
I wandered through the plaza, taking in the sights and sounds. Tourists and locals alike bustled about, and the energy was infectious. I took a moment to admire the Cusco Cathedral and the Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús, both imposing structures that showcase the city's rich religious history. The Cathedral, in particular, is a sight to behold, its architecture a testament to the fusion of cultures that defines Cusco.
The stones of Cusco whisper tales of an empire long past, yet the city's spirit remains vibrantly alive in the present.
Next, I ventured towards the legendary Twelve Angled Stone. As I walked along the narrow pedestrian street of Calle Hatunrumiyoc, I could feel the weight of history beneath my feet. This stone is a marvel of Inca engineering, a testament to their mastery of stonework. It's incredible how the Incas were able to fit this stone so perfectly into the surrounding wall, without the use of mortar. It is believed to represent the division of 24 families of Cusco: 12 during the Hurin dynasty and 12 during the Hanan dynasty. The stone was originally part of the Inca palace called Palacio Inca Roca.

The Twelve Angled Stone is more than just a rock; it's a symbol of Inca ingenuity and cultural pride. Touching it is forbidden, but simply gazing upon it fills you with a sense of awe. It's a reminder of the incredible civilization that once thrived here, and it's a privilege to witness their legacy firsthand.
For lunch, I decided to try KUSYKAY Peruvian Craft Food, and it was an absolute delight. The restaurant is known for its modern twist on traditional Peruvian cuisine, using local and organic ingredients. I had the vegetable ceviche, and it was bursting with flavor. The staff were incredibly friendly and the atmosphere was cozy and inviting. It's no wonder this place has such rave reviews!

After a satisfying lunch, I decided to embrace the city's modern side with a visit to Paddy's Irish Pub. Yes, an Irish pub in Cusco! It might seem out of place, but it's a popular spot for tourists and locals alike. Claimed to be the highest Irish Pub in the world, Paddy's is a great hangout for visitors from all over the world. I enjoyed a refreshing beer and chatted with fellow travelers, sharing stories and experiences. It was a fun and unexpected way to spend the afternoon.

As evening approached, I made my way to LIMBUS RESTOBAR for dinner. This place is famous for its stunning views of the city, and it did not disappoint. Perched high above Cusco, the restaurant offers a panoramic vista of the twinkling lights below. The modern decor and lively atmosphere added to the experience.

I ordered the leche de tigrese trout, and anticuchos (traditional charcoal grill beef heart), with Chicha morada (local juice w boiled purple corn, pineapple juice, and a hint of cinnamon). The food was delicious, and the service was impeccable. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration, soaking in the beauty of Cusco under the starlit sky.
I couldn't help but reflect on the incredible blend of cultures that defines Cusco. The city is a living tapestry of Inca heritage and Spanish influence, a place where ancient stones meet modern merriment. It's a city that captivates the senses and nourishes the soul.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Cusco Planetarium and the Museo Casa Concha. I'm excited to learn more about the stars and the history of this fascinating region. Before I leave Cusco on Friday, I plan to buy some souvenirs for Nadia and Liam. I'm sure they'll love something from Souvenirs Cusco.
As I headed back to the Sonesta Hotel Cusco, I felt a sense of gratitude for this incredible journey. Cusco has exceeded all my expectations, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. I'm already looking forward to sharing these experiences with Liam and Nadia one day.

Back at the hotel, I took out my travel journal to document the day's adventures. It's important for me to capture these memories, not just for myself but also to share with my readers. I hope my stories inspire others to embark on their own journeys of discovery, to explore new cultures, and to embrace the beauty of our world.
I also made a note to buy a plug adapter for Peruvian outlets. It's one of the items I forgot to pack, and it would certainly make my life easier. I'm also hoping the sun is shining tomorrow, but if not, I'll be sure to bring my umbrella for unexpected rain showers. It's all part of the adventure, right?
Before drifting off to sleep, I sent Liam a quick message to let him know I was thinking of him. It's not easy being away from my family, but I know this solo journey is important for my own personal growth. And I can't wait to share all my stories with them when I return to Kingston.
Goodnight from Cusco, everyone! May your dreams be filled with ancient stones and modern merriment.
