Solo Adventure through Kanazawa's Historical and Cultural Gems
Day 7: Delving into Kanazawa's Soul: A Day of Tea Houses and Castle Grandeur
Explore Kanazawa's historical Nishi Chaya District and majestic Kanazawa Castle, savoring local flavors and cultural treasures.
Whispers of the Past, Echoes of Today
Today was all about stepping back in time and soaking in the historical essence of Kanazawa. I wanted to experience the city's traditional charm, and what better way than to wander through old tea house districts and explore a majestic castle? It was a day of sensory delights, from the delicate aromas of matcha to the imposing presence of ancient stone walls.
My morning began with a stroll through the Nishi Chaya District. Compared to the bustling Higashi Chaya, Nishi Chaya is smaller and more intimate. It's a single street lined with beautifully preserved Edo-era buildings, exuding a sense of tranquility that's hard to find in a modern city. The wooden latticework of the tea houses, the gentle breeze rustling through the trees – it felt like stepping into a scene from a historical drama.

I explored a few of the shops, each offering unique crafts and local sweets. I even popped into the Nishi Chaya Museum, a former tea house, to get a glimpse of what life was like when geiko entertained wealthy patrons here. The well-appointed rooms and historical artifacts transported me to another era. It's fascinating to imagine the music, laughter, and hushed conversations that once filled these spaces.
To walk through Kanazawa is to walk through history, each stone and street whispering tales of a bygone era.
After immersing myself in the tea house district, it was time to explore the grandeur of Kanazawa Castle. The castle, first built in 1583 by Maeda Toshiie, the first feudal lord of the Kaga domain, has been through many fires. What stands today are partially restored structures, testaments to the resilience and ingenuity of the people who rebuilt it time and again. As I approached the Ishikawa-mon Gate, one of the few original structures, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe. The gate, with its intricate details and imposing presence, is a tangible link to the past.

I spent hours wandering through the castle grounds, marveling at the massive stone walls and the meticulously reconstructed turrets. The Gojukken Nagaya Warehouse and the Hishiyagura Turret offered a glimpse into the castle's history and the architectural techniques used in its restoration. It's incredible to see how traditional methods were employed to bring these structures back to life.
One of the most fascinating aspects of Kanazawa Castle is the variety of stone walls. They call it a stone wall museum, and rightly so! Each wall showcases different construction techniques and styles, reflecting the castle's long and varied history. Some walls are made of roughly hewn stones, while others are crafted with precision and artistry. It’s a testament to the changing times and the evolving skills of the builders.
By lunchtime, I was famished. I decided to try HUNI, a modern Izakaya restaurant near the Asano River. The owner was incredibly welcoming, and the food was exceptional. I had a mushroom and shiso leaf pasta that was divine, along with a tofu and sesame seed salad. It was a delightful culinary experience, blending traditional Japanese flavors with modern techniques. It reminded me of the Argentinian flavors I grew up with, a fusion of tradition and innovation.

After lunch, I was eager to try some of Kanazawa's famous curry. I headed to Turban Curry Main Store, a local institution known for its thick, rich curry. I ordered the L-set Curry, which came with pork cutlet, hamburger steak, and sausage. It was served on a stainless steel plate, and I ate it with a spoon, just like the locals do. The curry was hearty and flavorful, a perfect comfort food after a long day of exploring.

In the late afternoon, before heading back to HOTEL MYSTAYS Kanazawa Katamachi, I made a stop at the Ishikawa Local Products Center. It's a treasure trove of local crafts and souvenirs. I sampled various sweets and snacks, admiring the intricate lacquerware and colorful Kutani pottery. I even considered trying my hand at a wagashi-making workshop, but decided to save that for another visit. I picked up a few gifts for Lena and Mateo, knowing they would appreciate a taste of Kanazawa's unique culture.

For dinner, I decided to indulge in a traditional Kanazawa culinary experience at Daimyo Chaya. This restaurant, located near Kanazawa Station, is known for its Kaga cuisine and fresh seafood. I opted for a Kaiseki meal, a multi-course feast that showcased the region's seasonal delicacies. The Kani crab sashimi was exquisite, and the Jibu-ni stew was rich and flavorful. The restaurant's serene atmosphere and impeccable service made it a truly memorable dining experience.

As I sit here reflecting on the day, I am struck by the seamless blend of tradition and modernity that defines Kanazawa. The city has managed to preserve its historical charm while embracing contemporary culture. It's a place where you can wander through ancient tea house districts, explore majestic castles, and indulge in innovative cuisine, all in a single day.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore Mount Utatsu and the Kazuemachi Chaya District. I'm also looking forward to unwinding at the Kanazawa Music Bar in the evening. I'm sure it will be another day filled with unforgettable experiences. Until then, *adiós* from Kanazawa!
P.S. I really need to remember to buy a universal adapter. My phone is constantly running out of battery, and I’m relying on the kindness of cafes to keep it charged! Also, I should probably grab some sunscreen. The sun here is deceptively strong, and I don’t want to end up looking like a *langostino*.
Explore Kanazawa's rich history and vibrant culture on a solo journey filled with Edo-era charm, art, and culinary delights.
