Tranquility and Tastes of the Blue City

Today was a beautiful blend of nature, history, and, of course, the exquisite tastes of Chefchaouen. I set out to explore some of the quieter corners of this blue pearl, and it turned out to be a day filled with delightful surprises and culinary adventures. As a librarian, I always appreciate a good story, and today, Chefchaouen told me many.

My day began with a leisurely stroll to Park Sidi Abdelhamid. Leaving Maison D'hôtes Afassi, I walked through the winding blue alleys, each turn revealing another picturesque scene worthy of a photograph. The air was fresh, a welcome change from the bustling medina. The park itself was a serene oasis, filled with lush greenery and vibrant flowers. It was the perfect place to escape the midday heat and immerse myself in nature. I found a shaded bench and spent some time simply soaking in the peaceful atmosphere, listening to the birds sing and watching families enjoy their time together. I made a mental note to bring Sofia here someday; she would absolutely love it.

The beauty of a place often lies not just in its sights, but in the moments of peace and reflection it offers.

After my tranquil interlude in the park, I decided to explore Bab El Ain, one of the main entrances to the old medina. As I approached, the historical significance of the gate was palpable. The architecture was stunning, a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Chefchaouen. Bab El Ain, meaning The Gate of the Spring, serves as a dividing point between the colonial side of Chefchaouen and the old town. I wandered through the narrow, winding streets surrounding the gate, encountering local artisans and vibrant shops. It was a fantastic spot for photography, and I spent a good hour capturing the essence of this beautiful locale. The blend of traditional Moroccan architecture and the unique aesthetic of Chefchaouen was truly enchanting.

For breakfast, I had the pleasure of dining at Restaurant Hamsa. The rooftop terrace offered a breathtaking view of the city that’s hard to put into words. I ordered a traditional Moroccan breakfast with mint tea, which was the perfect start to my day. The staff were incredibly friendly, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It’s these little moments of connection that make traveling solo so rewarding.

Lunch was at Assaada, a delightful Moroccan restaurant on Rue Abi Khancha. The cozy ambiance and traditional Moroccan decor immediately made me feel at home. The menu featured an array of traditional dishes, and I decided to try the lamb tagine, which was slow-cooked to perfection with aromatic spices. It was absolutely divine! The portions were generous, and the flavors were rich and authentic. I savored every bite while soaking in the picturesque surroundings of Chefchaouen from their outdoor terrace.

As the day drew to a close, I ventured to Bar Oum Rabie for a relaxing evening. Finding a place to unwind and enjoy a quiet drink is something I cherish, especially after a day of exploration. The bar had a laid-back atmosphere, and I enjoyed a glass of local wine while reflecting on my adventures. It was a perfect way to wind down and prepare for dinner.

Dinner was at Restaurant Bab Ssour, a charming spot known for its traditional Moroccan cuisine. I opted for the Moroccan Chicken Tajin with chicken, lemon, and olives, and it was a culinary masterpiece. The flavors were perfectly balanced, and the presentation was exquisite. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting ambiance, making it a perfect place to end my day.

As I walked back to Maison D'hôtes Afassi, the city was bathed in the soft glow of the evening lights. The blue hues seemed even more magical, and I felt a deep sense of contentment. Today was a reminder of why I love to travel – the opportunity to discover new places, immerse myself in different cultures, and create lasting memories.

Thinking about tomorrow, I am excited to explore more of Chefchaouen's hidden gems. My itinerary includes visits to Bab Chaouen and Darb Limoun. I plan to start my day with breakfast at RESTAURANT CASA ANDALUZ, followed by lunch at Restaurant Ali Baba, and dinner at Restaurant Morisco. I am also looking forward to browsing the Hibart Souvenirs Shop for unique mementos.

Reflecting on my trip so far, I realize that I forgot to pack a portable phone charger and an umbrella. These would have been incredibly useful, especially during long days of exploring and unexpected weather changes. It’s a good reminder to always double-check my packing list before future adventures.

Chefchaouen continues to enchant me with its beauty and charm. Each day brings new discoveries and unforgettable experiences. I am grateful for the opportunity to explore this magical city and share my journey with all of you. Until tomorrow, may your travels be filled with wonder and joy!
