Embracing Hoi An's Gentle Rhythm
Today was a beautiful immersion into the heart of Vietnam's countryside and the soul of its artistry. It was a day of gentle exploration, filled with the simple pleasures of nature, the warmth of its people, and the discovery of hidden talents. Leaving the bustling streets of Hoi An behind, we ventured into a world where life moves at a more deliberate pace, where the land provides and the hands create.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Cao Cao Grasshopper. The name itself was intriguing, and the food did not disappoint. It was a great way to fuel up for the day's adventures. The fresh flavors of Vietnamese cuisine always invigorate me, reminding me of the simple joys in life. We then embarked on our Hoi An Ecotour, a journey into the serene landscapes surrounding the ancient town.

The Ecotour was an experience that engaged all of my senses. We cycled through the countryside, the air filled with the scent of rice paddies and the sounds of rural life. It was a welcome change from the city's hustle, a chance to breathe deeply and appreciate the natural beauty of Vietnam. I found myself reflecting on my childhood in Teruel, where life was similarly connected to the land. I shared stories with Sofia about growing up in a small town, hoping to instill in her a love for nature and a respect for different ways of life.
Our next stop was the Cam Thanh Rice Fields, a vibrant tapestry of green stretching as far as the eye could see. The rice fields were especially beautiful in the soft December light. Despite it being the tail end of the rainy season, we were lucky to have a day with only occasional drizzles. We learned about the traditional farming methods, the hard work and dedication that goes into cultivating this staple crop. I even tried my hand at planting rice, an activity that quickly humbled me with its difficulty. Hans, ever the supportive husband, chuckled at my clumsy attempts, while Sofia giggled with delight.

“The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning, you didn't even think to ask.”
Lunch at Pho Xua was a culinary delight. This small, beautiful house in the heart of Hoi An's old town served up some unforgettable traditional food. The *pho* was rich and flavorful, and the *banh xeo* was a crispy, savory treat. I particularly enjoyed the Hoi An chilli sauce, a taste that's hard to find anywhere else. It was the perfect spot to relax and savor the authentic tastes of Vietnam, a reminder of why I love exploring new cultures through their cuisine. I made a mental note to try and recreate some of these dishes back home in Bonn, adding a German twist, of course.

In the afternoon, we visited Reaching Out Arts & Crafts, a fair-trade artisan market with a heartwarming mission. This unique shop provides job opportunities for people with disabilities, allowing them to create beautiful handmade items and lead independent lives. As someone who values inclusivity, I was touched by their commitment to social responsibility and sustainability.

The shop was filled with an abundance of bedding, bags, jewelry, stationery, and toys, all perfect presents to bring back home. I was particularly drawn to the ceramics recovered from shipwrecks off the coast of Quang Nam. Each piece told a story, a tangible connection to Vietnam's rich maritime history. Sofia, of course, gravitated towards the toys, while Hans admired the intricate jewelry. We spent a considerable amount of time browsing, chatting with the artisans, and learning about their craft. It was more than just shopping; it was an experience that connected us to the community and supported a worthy cause. The staff even requested we whisper, adding to the serene ambiance, and appreciated sign language as some employees were deaf.
Before dinner, we strolled through the Ancient Town, which was preparing for the evening's Lantern Festival. Although the festival is a monthly event, December's celebration often includes additional festivities leading up to Christmas and New Year's. The town was already adorned with colorful lights and festive decorations, creating a magical atmosphere. I imagined how enchanting it would be to release a lantern on the Thu Bon River, making a wish for our loved ones.
Our day concluded with dinner at Little Faifo Restaurant, a charming café in the heart of Hoi An's Ancient Town. The restaurant had a cozy and intimate atmosphere, with a lovely outdoor seating area. The food was excellent and the service was friendly and attentive. It was the perfect end to a day filled with exploration and discovery. We savored the flavors of Vietnamese cuisine, shared stories, and laughed together, grateful for the memories we were creating.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I am filled with a sense of gratitude. Hoi An has a way of slowing you down, of making you appreciate the simple things in life. It's a place where you can connect with nature, immerse yourself in culture, and support local communities. It's a place that nourishes the soul and leaves you feeling inspired. I am eager to see what tomorrow brings, with our lantern making class and a visit to the Hoi An Handicraft Village. I'm particularly excited about the prospect of creating our own lanterns, adding a personal touch to the town's vibrant tapestry of light. Perhaps we'll even stop by Sky bar Hoi An (rastabar) for a nightcap, enjoying the city's nightlife from above.
Tomorrow promises to be another day of creativity and cultural immersion, and I can't wait to share it with you all. Until then, *adiós* from Hoi An!
