Day 2: A Day of Cultural Immersion in Hoi An's Ancient Town
Discovering Hoi An's rich heritage through its museums, historic houses, and vibrant markets. A journey into the heart of Vietnamese culture.
Stepping Back in Time in Hoi An
Today was a day dedicated to delving deep into the cultural heart of Hoi An. I wanted to truly understand the history and traditions that have shaped this charming town, and I couldn't wait to share my experiences with you all. From exploring ancient houses to immersing ourselves in local markets, every moment was a step back in time.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Morning Glory Original. Hans and Sofia were particularly excited to try the local delicacies. The restaurant was bustling with activity, and I could see why it's such a popular spot. The aroma of freshly prepared Vietnamese dishes filled the air, making my stomach rumble with anticipation. As Ms. Vy herself is considered a culinary pioneer in Hoi An, I knew we were in for a treat. I opted for a steaming bowl of Cao Lau, a regional noodle dish, while Hans enjoyed a flavorful Pho. Sofia, ever the adventurous eater, tried the white rose dumplings and loved them!

After breakfast, we made our way to the Museum of Folk Culture. Housed in a stunning 150-year-old Chinese trading house, the museum offered a fascinating glimpse into the daily life and customs of the local people. I was particularly impressed by the exhibits showcasing traditional crafts and performing arts. Sofia was fascinated by the traditional costumes, especially the intricate details of the wedding attire. The museum is not very big, but it offers a good overview of local customs and crafts. As a librarian specializing in historical archives, I appreciated the effort put into preserving and presenting the cultural heritage of Hoi An. It was a great way for Sofia to connect with the local culture, far more immersive than reading about it in a book.

Culture is the widening of the mind and of the spirit.
Next on our itinerary was the Old House of Tan Ky. This remarkably preserved merchant's house, dating back to the 18th century, provided a unique insight into the lives of Hoi An's prosperous trading families. The house has stood for over 200 years. As we wandered through the rooms, I couldn't help but imagine the generations who had lived and worked within those walls. The architecture, a blend of Vietnamese, Chinese, and Japanese styles, was truly remarkable. Sofia was intrigued by the story of the family who had lived there for centuries and the artifacts they had collected over time. The house is conveniently located within the Ancient Town, making it easily accessible on foot. I was impressed by the well-preserved structure and the stories it held within its walls. The intricate carvings and the layout of the house offered a glimpse into the past, a tangible connection to Hoi An's rich history. The house is built in a typical tubular style of Hoi An Ancient Town.

Our exploration continued with a visit to the vibrant Hoi An Market. The market was a sensory overload, with the sights, sounds, and smells of local life swirling around us. From fresh produce and spices to clothing and handicrafts, the market had something for everyone. Sofia was particularly drawn to the colorful lanterns and the silk scarves. I enjoyed watching the locals bargaining and interacting with each other, a lively display of community spirit. Despite the crowds, the market was well-organized, and we easily navigated our way through the various stalls. I picked up some local spices to bring back home, hoping to recreate some of the delicious dishes we had tried. Hans, on the other hand, was fascinated by the local produce, marveling at the variety of fruits and vegetables. The market was a true reflection of Hoi An's vibrant culture, a place where tradition and commerce intertwined.

For lunch, we decided to try Madam Kieu Vietnamese Restaurant. It was a delightful experience. The restaurant's ambiance was charming, with a touch of elegance that made it perfect for a relaxing midday meal. The menu featured a wide array of Vietnamese dishes, all prepared with fresh, local ingredients. I opted for the Mi Quang, a flavorful noodle soup, while Hans chose the Com Ga Hoi An, a chicken rice dish that was a local specialty. Sofia, as always, was eager to try something new and ordered the Banh Xeo, a crispy crepe filled with shrimp, pork, and bean sprouts. The dishes were beautifully presented, and the flavors were simply divine. The staff were friendly and attentive, making our dining experience even more enjoyable. I particularly appreciated the restaurant's commitment to using sustainable practices and supporting local farmers. It was a meal that not only satisfied our taste buds but also aligned with our values. The restaurant is located on lantern street on the corner of the night market across from the ancient Japanese bridge.

In the evening, we decided to unwind at The Shamrock Irish Pub Hoi An. While it might seem out of place to visit an Irish pub in Vietnam, we were curious to see how the two cultures blended together. The pub had a lively atmosphere, with live music and a mix of locals and tourists. Hans enjoyed a pint of Guinness, while I opted for a local beer. Sofia, of course, stuck to her usual lemonade. The pub's location by the river provided a beautiful view, and we enjoyed watching the boats go by as we listened to the music. It was a fun and relaxing way to end our day of cultural exploration. The pub offers a unique mix of Irish and Vietnamese elements.

Before heading back to the hotel, we had dinner at Red Dragon Restaurant and Cooking Class. The restaurant offered a unique dining experience, combining delicious Vietnamese cuisine with the opportunity to learn how to cook it yourself. Although we didn't participate in the cooking class, we thoroughly enjoyed the food. I ordered the seafood hotpot, while Hans chose the grilled fish. Sofia, predictably, went for the spring rolls. The dishes were flavorful and authentic, and the service was excellent. The restaurant had a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, making it a perfect place to relax after a long day of exploring. The Red Bridge Cooking School is one of the schools in the city with the best reputation.
