First Impressions of Hoi An

After a long journey from Bonn, with a connecting flight in Da Nang, we finally arrived in Hoi An! The air is warm and carries a hint of the exotic, a welcome change from the December chill back home. I'm so excited to explore this UNESCO World Heritage site with Hans and Sofia. We’ve heard so much about its beauty, but nothing truly prepares you for the sensory explosion that is Hoi An.

Our first stop, after settling into the lovely Maison Vy Hotel, was, of course, the famed Hoi An Ancient Town. As a librarian specializing in historical archives, I was immediately captivated. The streets are a living museum, a tapestry woven with threads of Chinese, Japanese, and Vietnamese influences. The architecture whispers stories of a bustling trading port, a crossroads of cultures that has stood the test of time. I could spend weeks just wandering these streets, soaking it all in. Luckily, we have nine days, so I plan to savor every moment.

We started our exploration with a hearty breakfast at Orivy Hoi An Local Food Restaurant. It was a delightful introduction to Vietnamese cuisine. The restaurant had a cozy, family-owned feel, and the Banh Xeo was a revelation—crispy, savory, and bursting with fresh herbs. Sofia, surprisingly, was a big fan, devouring her portion with gusto. Hans enjoyed a traditional Cao Lau, a Hoi An specialty. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of sightseeing.

To walk through Hoi An is to step back in time, to wander through a living canvas painted with the colors of history and culture.

Next on the list was the Precious Heritage Art Gallery Museum. I was eager to see Réhahn's portraits of Vietnam's ethnic minorities. His work is incredibly moving, capturing the dignity and resilience of these communities. Sofia was fascinated by the vibrant costumes and the stories behind each portrait. It was a powerful reminder of the rich cultural diversity within Vietnam.

Lunch at HOME Hoi An - HOME Vietnamese Restaurant was another culinary delight. The restaurant is conveniently located near the Ancient Town, making it an easy stop during our explorations. The elegant dining space and diverse menu offered a great selection of Hoi An specialties. We tried a set menu that allowed us to sample a variety of dishes, from fresh spring rolls to flavorful noodle soups. The service was impeccable, and the attention to detail made the experience even more special.

After lunch, we dove headfirst into the shopping scene at Hoi An Old Town (Shopping Street). The tailor shops beckoned with promises of custom-made clothing, and the silk lanterns cast a warm glow on the bustling streets. I couldn't resist purchasing a beautiful silk scarf, a perfect souvenir to remind me of this enchanting town. Sofia, of course, was drawn to the colorful lanterns, and we ended up buying a small one for her room back at the hotel. Hans, ever the pragmatist, was on the lookout for a new travel adapter, as we seemed to have forgotten ours back in Bonn.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Secret Garden Hoian for dinner. Tucked away in a little laneway, it truly felt like a hidden gem. The restaurant was beautifully decorated, with lush greenery and a tranquil atmosphere. The traditional Vietnamese food was delicious, and the setting was simply magical. We enjoyed a variety of dishes, including fresh rice paper rolls and flavorful fish dishes. Sofia was particularly delighted by her cool coconut drink, a refreshing treat after a long day of exploring.

The evening ended with a leisurely stroll along the Thu Bon River. The lanterns were lit, casting a mesmerizing glow on the water. The air was filled with the sounds of music and laughter. It was the perfect way to end our first day in Hoi An. As we walked back to the hotel, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this opportunity to explore such a beautiful and culturally rich place with my family. Even though I forgot my raincoat and hat, the weather was pleasant, with only a few light showers, and the festive spirit of the town more than made up for it.

Hoi An is gearing up for Christmas and New Year festivities. Decorations are already popping up, blending seamlessly with the traditional Vietnamese charm. I am looking forward to seeing how the town transforms as we get closer to the holidays. Perhaps we’ll even catch a glimpse of Ông già Noel (Vietnamese Santa Claus)!

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Museum of Folk Culture, the Old House of Tan Ky, and the bustling Hoi An Market. I’m particularly excited about the market; I’ve heard it’s a feast for the senses, a place where you can find everything from fresh produce to handmade crafts. And perhaps we’ll end the day with a drink at The Shamrock Irish Pub Hoi An, a little taste of Europe in the heart of Vietnam.

I can already tell that this trip will be one for the books. Hoi An has already captured my heart with its beauty, its history, and its vibrant culture. I can't wait to see what the next eight days will bring.

I am so glad that we decided to come to Hoi An in December. The weather is comfortable for walking, and the town is less crowded than during peak season. It’s the perfect time to explore the ancient streets, visit the tailor shops, and enjoy the quieter riverside evenings. Plus, the festive atmosphere with Christmas and New Year celebrations adds an extra layer of charm. It’s truly a magical time to be here.

And as a final thought, I must remember to keep an eye out for the Lantern Festival, held every lunar month. I’ve read that it’s an even more atmospheric experience in December, with the cooler evenings making it comfortable to stroll and join the celebrations. I wouldn't want to miss the opportunity to release a lantern on the Thu Bon River and capture some beautiful night photos.
