Echoes of the Mountains

Today was a day of embracing the quiet corners of Gran Paradiso, a welcome change of pace after our more strenuous hikes earlier in the week. With Hans and Sofia by my side, I set out to explore Lago Goletta and Vallone dell'Urtier, seeking a deeper connection with the park's serene landscapes. It was a day filled with gentle discoveries and the kind of peaceful moments that truly rejuvenate the soul.

Our day began, as it often does here, with a delightful breakfast at Hotel Sant'Orso - Mountain Lodge & Spa. The spread was as charming as ever, featuring fresh pastries, local cheeses, and the strong coffee I've come to rely on. Sofia, predictably, made a beeline for the croissants, while Hans and I enjoyed some of the savory options. The hotel's cozy atmosphere and attentive service always set a positive tone for the adventures ahead.

Fueled and ready, we drove towards Lago Goletta, a picturesque lake nestled amidst the alpine scenery. The drive itself was a treat, with winding roads offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. As we parked the car and began our short hike to the lake, the air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and wildflowers. It was the kind of day where the sun shines just right, making everything look vibrant and alive.

Reaching Lago Goletta, we were greeted by a stunning vista. The lake's turquoise waters reflected the snow-capped peaks, creating a mirror image that was simply breathtaking. We spent some time simply sitting by the shore, soaking in the tranquility. Sofia, ever the explorer, was fascinated by the small pebbles and interesting rock formations along the water's edge. Hans, with his keen eye for photography, captured the scene from various angles, determined to preserve the beauty of the moment.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found not in conquering peaks, but in savoring the quiet beauty of the path.

After our lakeside interlude, we decided to venture into Vallone dell'Urtier. This valley is known for its gentle hiking trails and stunning natural beauty, making it perfect for a family outing. The path wound through lush meadows, dotted with colorful wildflowers and grazing cows. The sound of cowbells added a charming touch to the already idyllic setting.

We followed the trail at a leisurely pace, stopping frequently to admire the scenery and take photographs. Sofia was particularly excited about spotting a few marmots scurrying about in the distance. She peppered us with questions about them, eager to learn more about the local wildlife. It's moments like these that make traveling with family so rewarding – sharing in her sense of wonder and discovery.

As lunchtime approached, we made our way to Lou Bequet in Cogne. This restaurant had been recommended to us for its authentic local cuisine and charming atmosphere. We were not disappointed. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a rustic decor that perfectly complemented the surrounding landscape.

We started with the Gran Paradiso soup, a hearty and flavorful dish that warmed us from the inside out. For our main courses, Hans opted for the ossobuchi, while I chose the fagottino di pasta sfoglia, a delightful pastry filled with ratatouille. Sofia, of course, went for a simple pasta dish, which she devoured with gusto. The food was delicious, and the service was friendly and attentive. It was the perfect place to refuel after our morning adventures.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we decided to make a quick stop at Mountain Shop Aosta on our way back. I realized I had forgotten to pack an extra pair of hiking socks (a rookie mistake, I know!), and Hans wanted to check out their selection of photography equipment. The shop was well-stocked with everything an outdoor enthusiast could need, and the staff were knowledgeable and helpful. We quickly found what we were looking for and were back on the road in no time.

As the day drew to a close, we headed to La Brasserie du Bon Bec for dinner. This brasserie is known for its traditional Aosta Valley dishes and its cozy, welcoming atmosphere. We decided to try some of their specialties, including the polenta alla Valdostana and the frecachà, a unique veal dish with potatoes and onions. The food was hearty and delicious, and the atmosphere was lively and convivial. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.

Reflecting on the day, I realized that it wasn't about ticking off major landmarks or conquering challenging trails. It was about embracing the simple pleasures of nature, spending quality time with my family, and savoring the authentic flavors of the region. It was a day of quiet beauty and gentle discoveries, the kind of day that nourishes the soul and creates lasting memories. As we head into tomorrow, I am very much looking forward to visiting the Eremo di San Grato and Cascata Biolet. I've heard the views from the hermitage are spectacular, and Sofia is excited to see the waterfall. I think we will have breakfast at La Lanterna del Duca and then lunch at LO SCIATORE Ristorante Bar. And maybe, just maybe, Hans and I can sneak away for a quick drink at MPC Maison Publique de la Cervoise !

Tomorrow promises more adventures, but tonight, I'm content to bask in the afterglow of a day well-spent, grateful for the beauty that surrounds us and the love that binds us together.

I must remember to pack that portable phone charger I forgot!, and perhaps that travel pillow as well!

Gran Paradiso continues to surprise and delight, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
