Today was a day of contrasts, a dance between soaring heights and the echoing depths of history. Gran Paradiso National Park continued to enchant us, revealing its many facets with every step we took. It's days like these that remind me why I started this blog – to capture the essence of places and experiences that leave an indelible mark on the soul.

Our day began, as it often does on these Italian adventures, with a hearty breakfast at Hotel Belvedere. The aroma of fresh pastries and strong coffee filled the air, setting the stage for a day of exploration. Sofia was particularly excited, her eyes sparkling with anticipation for what lay ahead. Hans and I enjoyed the moment, knowing that these shared experiences are the threads that weave our family tapestry. The breakfast was a delightful mix of continental and local fare, the yogurt especially was a highlight.

Fuelled and ready, we set off for our first destination: Funivie Gran Paradiso. The cable car beckoned, promising panoramic views that would stretch as far as the eye could see. As we ascended, the landscape transformed beneath us. The charming village of Cogne shrank into miniature, and the towering peaks of the Gran Paradiso massif loomed ever closer. Sofia pressed her face against the glass, pointing out the tiny houses and winding roads below. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe, a reminder of the sheer scale and grandeur of nature. The ride itself was smooth and comfortable, a testament to the engineering that allows us to access such incredible heights with ease. The panoramic hike from the upper station provided breathtaking vistas of Valnontey valley and the Mont Blanc range. It was a bit steep at times, but the views were more than worth the effort.

Reaching the summit, we were greeted by a vista that stole our breath away. Snow-capped mountains pierced the sky, their jagged edges softened by the morning sun. We spent what felt like an eternity simply absorbing the view, capturing photos, and etching the scene into our memories. Sofia, ever the curious explorer, spotted a few mountain goats in the distance, their white coats blending seamlessly with the rocky terrain.

After descending from the heights, we decided to delve into the depths of history with a visit to Sentiero Miniere di Cogne. This hiking trail promised a glimpse into the region's mining past, a chance to learn about the lives of the men and women who toiled in these mountains in search of iron ore. The trail was a bit challenging, but manageable, and it wound its way through forests and past remnants of old mining structures. We imagined the miners who had walked these paths before us, their days filled with hard labor and the constant echo of pickaxes against stone. Sofia was fascinated by the old mining equipment, asking endless questions about how it worked and what it was used for. It was a valuable lesson in history, bringing the past to life in a tangible and engaging way.

Sofia, of course, went for the pasta, twirling the noodles around her fork with gusto. The tiramisu and gelato were also delicious. The restaurant is known for blending traditional Valdostan dishes with creative Mediterranean cuisine, a concept I found particularly appealing. It was the perfect way to refuel after our morning adventures, and the cozy ambiance made us feel right at home.

It was a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but also about connecting with people and cultures.

I chose a hearty mountain stew, while Hans opted for a grilled steak. Sofia, ever the adventurous eater, tried a bite of both, declaring them both delicious. The service was attentive and friendly, making us feel like welcome guests in their home. It was the perfect end to a perfect day, a culinary journey that complemented our adventures in the mountains.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we plan to explore Lago Goletta and Vallone dell'Urtier. We'll start with breakfast at Hotel Sant'Orso - Mountain Lodge & Spa, followed by a packed lunch from Lou Bequet. In the afternoon, we might indulge in some retail therapy at Mountain Shop Aosta, picking up souvenirs and mementos of our trip.

As I sit here now, writing these words, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the experiences we've had today. Gran Paradiso National Park has exceeded all our expectations, offering a blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and culinary delights. It's a place that nourishes the soul, a reminder of the simple joys of life: family, adventure, and the beauty of the world around us. And as I drift off to sleep, I know that tomorrow will bring new adventures, new discoveries, and new memories to cherish. I am especially happy, because I forgot to pack my portable phone charger, but Hans had an extra one, so I could take pictures with my phone today. I am also happy that I could use my travel pillow, which I had forgotten to pack before we left Bonn.
