Whispers of Royalty and Lace

Today was a delightful blend of history, gastronomy, and artisanal beauty. Gran Paradiso National Park continues to enchant us with its multifaceted charm, offering experiences that cater to both our love for the outdoors and our appreciation for local culture. It's days like these that remind me why I cherish these family adventures.

Our day began, as always, with a hearty breakfast at the Hotel du Grand Paradis - 1899 Auberge Boutique in Cogne. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Italian coffee filled the cozy dining room, setting the perfect tone for our explorations. Sofia was particularly excited about the pastries, while Hans and I enjoyed planning our route for the day over steaming cups of cappuccino. Fully energized, we set off to explore the Royal Hunting House at Orvieille.

The drive to Orvieille was breathtaking. The winding roads offered panoramic views of the Gran Paradiso massif, its snow-capped peaks piercing the clear blue sky. The landscape was a vibrant tapestry of green meadows dotted with wildflowers, a scene straight out of a postcard. Even Hans, usually engrossed in his thoughts, couldn't help but comment on the sheer beauty of the surroundings. I couldn’t resist stopping several times to capture the scenery with my camera, much to Sofia’s amusement.

Arriving at the Royal Hunting House at Orvieille, I was immediately struck by its serene setting. Nestled amidst lush greenery and surrounded by majestic mountains, the house exuded a sense of history and tranquility. Built in the 19th century as a retreat for King Vittorio Emanuele II, it now stands as a testament to the region's rich heritage. As we wandered through the grounds, I imagined the royal hunts that once took place here, the echoes of horses' hooves and hunting horns resonating through the valleys.

Sofia was fascinated by the architecture of the hunting house, its stone walls and slate roof whispering tales of a bygone era. We explored the surrounding trails, which once served as royal hunting roads, marveling at the stunning views of the Aosta Valley. The trails were well-maintained, making it easy for us to hike and soak in the natural beauty. I tried to explain to Sofia how important this park was for the conservation of the Ibex population, once threatened by extinction and now a symbol of the park itself.

The beauty of Gran Paradiso lies not only in its majestic landscapes but also in its ability to transport you to another time, another world.

After our historical immersion, it was time for lunch. We drove back towards Cogne and stopped at La Barme, a delightful restaurant known for its traditional Aosta Valley cuisine.

The restaurant had a rustic charm, with wooden beams and stone walls creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. We ordered a selection of local specialties, including polenta with wild mushrooms, hearty vegetable soup, and a selection of local cheeses. Sofia, surprisingly, enjoyed the polenta, declaring it much better than the German version!

With our bellies full and spirits high, we ventured into Cogne to visit Les Dentellières de Cogne, a cooperative of local women dedicated to preserving the art of lace-making.

This was an experience I had eagerly anticipated, having read about the intricate designs and delicate craftsmanship of Cogne lace. As we stepped into the workshop, we were greeted by a group of women meticulously working on their lacemaking pillows, their fingers moving with incredible speed and precision.

The history of Cogne lace is fascinating. Legend has it that the art was introduced to the region in the 16th century by Benedictine nuns fleeing a monastery in Cluny. They taught the local women the intricate techniques of lacemaking, which soon became an integral part of the region's cultural heritage. The women at Les Dentellières de Cogne use traditional methods, employing up to 88 bobbins to create their intricate designs. The patterns often depict local flora and fauna, reflecting the beauty of the surrounding landscape.

Sofia was mesmerized by the lacemakers, watching in awe as they transformed simple threads into exquisite works of art. I purchased a beautiful lace doily as a souvenir, a tangible reminder of the skill and dedication of these talented artisans. It’s these kinds of authentic cultural experiences that I love sharing with my family, offering a glimpse into the traditions that define a place.

As evening approached, we made our way to Ristorante Hostellerie De L'Atelier for dinner.

This restaurant, known for its elegant ambiance and innovative cuisine, was the perfect setting for our final meal of the day. The menu featured a modern twist on traditional Aosta Valley dishes, with an emphasis on fresh, local ingredients. I opted for the risotto with saffron and local cheese, while Hans chose the lamb with rosemary and roasted vegetables. Sofia, ever adventurous, tried the homemade pasta with pesto, declaring it the best pasta ever!

After dinner, we took a leisurely stroll through the streets of Cogne, enjoying the crisp mountain air and the twinkling lights of the village. The atmosphere was festive, with locals and tourists alike enjoying the evening. We stopped for gelato at a small shop, savoring the sweet treat as we reflected on our day's adventures.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Maison Bruil di Introd and Castello di Fénis [in the neighboring Aosta Valley], delving deeper into the region's history and architectural marvels. We'll start the day with breakfast at La Maison du Gout Cafè, followed by lunch at Ristorante e Locanda Chalet del Lago. In the evening, we'll unwind at Old Distillery, a local bar known for its ambiance. I'm looking forward to uncovering more hidden gems and sharing them with you all!

As I sit here, writing this blog post, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences we've had today. Gran Paradiso National Park has exceeded all my expectations, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural immersion, and culinary delights. It's a place that nourishes the soul and creates memories that will last a lifetime. And I am so glad to be experiencing it with my family, Hans and Sofia.
