Whispers of the Past

Today, I ventured deeper into the heart of the Sacred Valley, a region that continues to captivate me with its blend of natural beauty and historical intrigue. It's astounding how much the Incas achieved, and today was all about experiencing more of their ingenuity. I'm always eager to uncover more about the people who called this land home centuries ago.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at missky organic fusión in Cusco. I enjoyed a delicious and healthy start, fueling up for the day’s explorations. The organic ingredients were a refreshing change, and I appreciated the restaurant's commitment to sustainable practices. After breakfast, I set off towards Moray, eager to witness the enigmatic circular terraces that have puzzled historians and archaeologists for decades.
As I approached Moray, the landscape transformed into a series of breathtaking vistas. The concentric terraces, carved deep into the earth, created a surreal and almost otherworldly scene. It's believed that the Incas used Moray as an agricultural laboratory, experimenting with different crops and microclimates to optimize their yields. The precision and engineering involved in creating these terraces are truly remarkable, a testament to the Incas' advanced knowledge of agriculture and resource management.
I spent a considerable amount of time wandering through the terraces, imagining the Incas carefully cultivating various plants, studying the effects of altitude, temperature, and sunlight. It was fascinating to learn that the temperature difference between the top and bottom terraces can be as much as 15 degrees Celsius, creating distinct microclimates that allowed the Incas to grow a diverse range of crops. As a librarian, I find myself drawn to the stories behind these places, piecing together the fragments of history to understand the lives of those who came before us.
The stones of Moray whisper tales of innovation, resilience, and a profound connection to the land.

From Moray, my journey continued to the Salt Mines of Maras, another extraordinary site that showcases the Incas' ingenuity and resourcefulness. As I approached Maras, the landscape shifted again, revealing a vast expanse of shimmering salt pans cascading down the hillside. The sight was simply mesmerizing, a mosaic of white and earth tones stretching as far as the eye could see.
The Salt Mines of Maras have been in operation since pre-Inca times, with evidence suggesting that salt extraction began as early as 500 to 1100 AD by the Wari civilization. The Incas later integrated the mines into their empire, meticulously organizing the production and distribution of salt. Even more surprising is that the Spanish conquerors never took over the local salt production. To this day, the mines are managed by local families who have inherited their salt ponds for generations.
I walked along the narrow paths between the salt pans, observing the intricate network of channels that feed the ponds with mineral-rich water from an underground spring. The process of salt extraction is remarkably simple yet effective: the water is channeled into the ponds, where it evaporates under the sun, leaving behind crystallized salt. The miners then carefully harvest the salt, continuing a tradition that has sustained their communities for centuries.
It was fascinating to witness the blend of ancient traditions and modern practices, as the local families worked diligently to maintain their salt ponds, preserving a cultural heritage that has endured for centuries. I even purchased some of the locally harvested salt, a unique souvenir that will remind me of this extraordinary place.

For lunch, I had the pleasure of dining at Restaurante Tinkuy Buffet Restaurant at Sanctuary Lodge, located near Machu Picchu. The buffet offered a wide variety of Peruvian and international dishes, and I particularly enjoyed the fresh ceviche and traditional Peruvian stews. The staff was attentive and friendly, making the dining experience even more enjoyable.
After a satisfying lunch, I took some time to explore Artesanias Condor 1, a local artisan shop in Aguas Calientes. I was impressed by the quality and craftsmanship of the handmade goods, from colorful textiles to intricate ceramics. I purchased a few unique souvenirs to bring back home, supporting the local artisans and preserving their cultural traditions.
As the day drew to a close, I found myself in Aguas Calientes, reflecting on the incredible experiences of the past few days. For dinner, I decided to try Toto's House, a popular restaurant known for its traditional Peruvian cuisine. I enjoyed a delicious meal of local specialties, savoring the flavors of Peru one last time. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the staff was friendly and welcoming.
Tomorrow marks the final day of my solo adventure to Machu Picchu. I plan to visit Choquequirao Archaeological Park and Humantay Lake, eager to explore more of Peru's rich history and natural beauty. I might even end the day with a drink at Machu Pisco Bar & Restaurant, celebrating the end of my journey. I am also contemplating extending my trip, as there is still so much to see. Perhaps Hans and Sofia would like to join me?
As I prepare to leave this enchanting land, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and wonder. Peru has exceeded all my expectations, offering a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty that has left an indelible mark on my soul. I will carry the memories of Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley, and the warmth of the Peruvian people with me always. This journey has not only enriched my understanding of history and culture but has also deepened my appreciation for the simple joys of solo travel. Until next time, Peru!
