A Day of Discovery and Delicious Farewells

As my Peruvian adventure nears its end, today was a whirlwind of breathtaking landscapes, historical exploration, and culinary delights. It was a day to remember, filled with challenging hikes, serene moments by glacial waters, and the vibrant flavors of Aguas Calientes.

My final full day in Peru began with a hearty breakfast at Julian Restaurant. Fuelled up, I set off to explore Choquequirao Archaeological Park. Often referred to as Machu Picchu's 'sister city', Choquequirao is perched high in the Andes, offering a more secluded and immersive experience. The trek to reach the site was demanding, with steep climbs and rugged paths that truly tested my endurance. However, the reward was more than worth the effort. As I wandered through the ancient terraces, temples, and plazas, I felt a profound connection to the Inca civilization. The park's remote location has helped preserve much of its history, making it a perfect destination for history enthusiasts seeking an authentic Inca experience.
The journey to Choquequirao is a testament to the enduring spirit of the Inca people and a reminder of the hidden wonders that await those who venture off the beaten path.

Choquequirao, meaning 'Cradle of Gold', was thought to be a vital administrative and religious hub, possibly serving as a key outpost during the rebellion against the Spanish forces. Historians believe it was a refuge for Manco Inca, the last Inca leader to resist the Spanish. Exploring the site, I was struck by the advanced architectural skills of the Incas, evident in the intricate stonework and the seamless integration of the structures into the natural landscape. The panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and the Apurimac River Canyon were simply awe-inspiring. It was easy to imagine the Incas using this strategic location to defend their empire and maintain their way of life.

After immersing myself in the history of Choquequirao, I journeyed to Humantay Lake. The hike to the lake was another physical challenge, but the stunning turquoise waters nestled beneath the towering Humantay glacier made every step worthwhile. The altitude was definitely a factor, leaving me breathless at times, but the sheer beauty of the landscape spurred me on. The color of the lake, a vibrant blue, is due to the minerals and algae within it. Swimming is not allowed, to protect the delicate ecosystem and preserve the lake's unique hue. Standing by the shore, I felt a sense of tranquility wash over me. The towering glacier, with its cascading waterfalls, created a dramatic backdrop that was both humbling and awe-inspiring. It was a perfect moment of serenity amidst the rugged beauty of the Andes.

After a morning of hiking and historical exploration, I returned to Aguas Calientes for a late lunch at Restaurant Bistro Bar Indio Feliz. This restaurant, with its French-Peruvian fusion cuisine and quirky decor, was a delightful sensory experience. The vibrant and eclectic design, filled with handcrafted items from Peru and around the world, created an inviting and fun atmosphere. I opted for the French onion soup, followed by the mango chicken, and finished with the apple pie. Each dish was a burst of flavor, and the presentation was impeccable. The friendly staff and the overall ambiance made it a memorable dining experience.

In the evening, I decided to try Machu Pisco Bar & Restaurant. It was the perfect place to unwind and reflect on the incredible journey I had undertaken. I enjoyed a Pisco Sour, the national drink of Peru, while savoring the lively atmosphere and the stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The bar offered an impressive selection of cocktails, wines, and beers, and the bartender's skills were truly commendable. It was a fitting end to a day filled with adventure and discovery.

As I sit here tonight, writing this blog post, I am filled with a mix of emotions. Gratitude for the incredible experiences I have had, and a tinge of sadness that my Peruvian adventure is coming to an end. This solo trip to Machu Picchu has been more than just a journey to a historical site; it has been a journey of self-discovery, cultural immersion, and personal growth. I have learned so much about the Inca civilization, the beauty of the Peruvian landscape, and the warmth of its people. I will carry these memories with me always.
Tomorrow, I will begin my journey back to Bonn, Germany. I am looking forward to seeing Hans and Sofia again, and sharing my stories with them. I am also excited to delve back into my work at the library, armed with new insights and a renewed appreciation for history. But a part of me will always remain in Peru, among the ancient ruins and the towering mountains. Until next time, adios!
I am so glad I decided to embrace the spontaneity of solo travel, and I encourage my readers to do the same. There is something truly special about exploring a new place on your own terms, connecting with fellow travelers, and discovering hidden gems that you might otherwise miss.
As I prepare to leave, I am already planning my next adventure. Perhaps I will explore the haunted locations in Mexico , or venture into the depths of the Amazon rainforest. The world is full of wonders waiting to be discovered, and I am eager to continue my journey of exploration and discovery.

Before I go, I want to share a German idiom that perfectly captures my experience in Peru: Alles hat ein Ende, nur die Wurst hat zwei. It means Everything has an end, only the sausage has two. While my time in Peru may be coming to an end, the memories and experiences will last a lifetime. And who knows, maybe I will return someday to explore even more of this incredible country.
