Kyoto's Timeless Charms: Temples, Torii, and Tantalizing Tastes

Today was a day of deep exploration and sensory indulgence in Kyoto. From the tranquil gardens of Higashiyama Jisho-ji, also known as the Silver Pavilion. The crisp morning air and the promise of a peaceful start were exactly what I needed. Built in 1482 by Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa as a retirement villa, it later became a Zen temple after his death. The temple is celebrated for its understated elegance, embodying the *wabi-sabi* aesthetic – finding beauty in simplicity and imperfection. As someone who appreciates the subtle nuances of design, I found myself captivated by the meticulously maintained moss garden and the iconic Silver Pavilion, which, despite not being covered in silver, exudes a unique charm.

Wei was particularly fascinated by the *Kogetsudai*, a mound of sand that seemed to be the heart of Ginkaku-ji. The way the surrounding trees framed it was truly remarkable. It was a great way to start the day, feeling grounded and connected to the history of this ancient city. Mei, ever the artist, was captivated by the way the morning light played across the moss garden, creating a tapestry of greens and shadows.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its grand monuments, but in the quiet corners where history and nature intertwine.

Next on our itinerary was the breathtaking Fushimi Inari Taisha. The contrast between the tranquil temple and the vibrant shrine was striking. As we approached, the seemingly endless path of vibrant orange *torii* gates snaking up the mountainside was a sight to behold. This shrine, dedicated to Inari, the deity of rice, prosperity, and business success, is a symbol of Kyoto itself. Founded in 711 AD, it serves as the head shrine for over 30,000 Inari shrines across Japan. The sheer number of *torii* gates, each donated by individuals and businesses, created an awe-inspiring tunnel that led us on a spiritual ascent.

Wei was excited to spot the fox statues, believed to be the messengers of Inari, each holding a different symbol – a key, a scroll, or a jewel. The hike to the top was invigorating, and the panoramic views of Kyoto were well worth the effort. I found myself reflecting on the countless prayers and wishes that had been offered at this sacred site over the centuries. The energy was palpable, a blend of reverence and hope.

Lunch was a culinary delight at Katsukura Tonkatsu Sanjo Main Store. After a morning of exploring, we were ready for a hearty meal. This restaurant is renowned for its exceptional *tonkatsu*, a Japanese dish of breaded and deep-fried pork cutlet. The Sanjo Main Store, located in a quaint alleyway, exudes a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. The warm wood accents and the aroma of perfectly fried pork made it an irresistible stop.

I opted for the pork tenderloin cutlet set meal, while Mei chose the yuba croquette and pork tenderloin cutlet set. The *tonkatsu* was cooked to perfection, with a crispy golden-brown crust and succulent, tender meat. What sets Katsukura apart is their commitment to quality – the pork is carefully sourced, and the sauces are homemade. I particularly enjoyed grinding my own sesame seeds to create a unique dipping sauce, adding a personal touch to the meal. Wei, of course, loved the kids meal with orange juice, a simple yet satisfying choice.

In the evening, we indulged in a truly unforgettable dining experience at Kobe Beef Steak Restaurant MOURIYA GION. This restaurant, located in the heart of Gion, is known for its exquisite Kobe beef and impeccable service. The ambiance was elegant and refined, setting the stage for a luxurious meal. We were seated at a counter where a personal chef prepared our steaks right in front of us. The artistry and precision with which he cooked the Kobe beef were mesmerizing.

I chose the Kobe sirloin, while Mei opted for the Kobe fillet. Each cut was grilled to perfection, achieving a melt-in-your-mouth tenderness that I had never experienced before. The chef also prepared a selection of vegetables, including zucchini and asparagus, to complement the beef. The flavors were rich and complex, a testament to the quality of the ingredients and the skill of the chef. Even Wei, who can be a picky eater, devoured his steak with gusto.

To cap off the evening, I decided to explore the nightlife a bit and ventured to Kyoto Star Bar. This bar is known for its expertly crafted cocktails and its intimate, stylish atmosphere. It was the perfect place to unwind after a day of cultural immersion and culinary adventures. The bartender, dressed in a traditional kimono, added a touch of Kyoto charm to the experience. I ordered a Ki No Bi Negroni, a local gin-based cocktail that was both refreshing and complex. The bar was a great place to meet locals and fellow travelers, sharing stories and laughter over expertly mixed drinks.

As I sipped my cocktail, I reflected on the day's experiences. From the serene gardens of Higashiyama Jisho-ji to the vibrant pathways of Fushimi Inari Taisha, and the exquisite meals at Katsukura and Mouriya, it was a day that truly captured the essence of Kyoto. Each location offered a unique perspective on this city's rich cultural tapestry, making it a day filled with unforgettable moments.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Tōji Temple and Yasaka Shrine, continuing our exploration of Kyoto's historical and spiritual landmarks. We also plan to do some shopping at Kyoto LOFT, a popular department store. I'm looking forward to another day of discovery and adventure in this enchanting city.

As I head back to Hotel Rings Kyoto, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences of the day. Kyoto continues to surprise and delight, offering a perfect blend of tradition and modernity.
