Today was all about immersing myself in the heart of Cusco, a city that effortlessly blends ancient history with vibrant modern life. From exploring archaeological sites to indulging in local cuisine, every moment was a sensory delight. It’s days like these that remind me why I traded my Zurich office for the open road.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at SUMAQCHA RESTAURANT. Nestled just off the main square, this family-owned gem is a far cry from the usual tourist traps. The cozy atmosphere and friendly faces made me feel right at home. I savored a traditional Peruvian breakfast of *pan con palta* (bread with avocado) and a strong cup of coffee, fueling up for a day of exploration. I must admit that I was a bit worried since I was the only one in the restaurant, but it was so worth it. The owner made me feel very welcome.

First on my itinerary was K'allachaka, an archaeological site that offered a fascinating glimpse into Cusco's ancient heritage. As I wandered through the impressive stonework and intricate designs, I couldn't help but marvel at the ingenuity of the Inca civilization. The stones fit together so perfectly, without any mortar, a testament to their advanced engineering skills. After K'allachaka, I made my way to Machu Andén, another intriguing site showcasing the agricultural prowess of the Incas. These ancient terraces, carved into the steep hillsides, were used for cultivation and demonstrate the deep understanding the Incas had of their environment. I was struck by the resourcefulness of these ancient farmers, who managed to coax life from the rugged Andean landscape. Andean agriculture is one of the best examples of the adaptation and knowledge of farmers to their environment for more than 5000 years.

For lunch, I ventured to Hacienda Huayoccari, a culinary haven located in the picturesque region of Huycho. This charming restaurant invited me to indulge in a menu that highlights traditional Peruvian flavors with an innovative twist. The ambiance was warm and welcoming, making it an ideal spot for families, couples, or solo travelers seeking to savor the rich culinary heritage of Peru. Before dinner, I decided to do some shopping at Rummy Outdoor. I needed to replace my portable phone charger, which I had forgotten to pack. The store was conveniently located near the Plaza de Armas, making it easy to pop in during my explorations. The staff were incredibly helpful, guiding me through their selection of high-quality outdoor gear. I ended up purchasing a new charger and a few extra camera batteries, ensuring I wouldn't miss any photo opportunities on tomorrow's trek.

As evening approached, I made my way to Uchu Peruvian Steakhouse for dinner. This culinary gem showcases the rich flavors and diverse ingredients of Peruvian cuisine. I indulged in an array of expertly grilled meats, from succulent steaks to flavorful local dishes that pay homage to Peru's rich culinary heritage. The attentive staff and cozy setting made for a memorable dining experience.

After dinner, I took a leisurely stroll through the Plaza de Armas, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of Cusco at night. The city was alive with music, laughter, and the aroma of street food. I couldn't resist trying a *picarone*, a traditional Peruvian donut, from a street vendor. As I savored the sweet treat, I reflected on the incredible day I had experienced.

Tomorrow, I'm excited to continue my journey as I head towards Choquequirao Puquio and Choquequirao Trekking. The prospect of exploring more Inca trails and discovering hidden archaeological treasures fills me with anticipation. Before heading back to the hotel, I plan to stop by El Huarique Bar for a nightcap and to unwind after a day of exploring.

This solo adventure has been nothing short of transformative. As I prepare for another day of trekking and exploration, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the rich history, stunning landscapes, and warm hospitality of Peru. Every step of the way, I'm reminded of the importance of embracing the unknown and venturing beyond the familiar.

As I reflect on my experiences, I realize that travel is more than just ticking off destinations on a list. It's about connecting with different cultures, discovering new perspectives, and creating memories that will last a lifetime. And as I continue my journey through Peru, I'm excited to see what other adventures await me.

Before heading back to my cozy room, I took one last glance at the starlit sky above Cusco. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day, filled with ancient wonders and culinary delights. I couldn't wait to see what tomorrow would bring.

For those planning a trip to Cusco, I highly recommend visiting during one of the city's many festivals. The city comes alive with magic, color, culture, and history, offering a multitude of events brimming with tradition and joy. The Inti Raymi, or Festival of the Sun, is one of the most significant and iconic festivals of Andean culture. Held every June 24, it coincides with the winter solstice in the southern hemisphere, marking the beginning of a new agricultural cycle for the Incas.

Also, I learned that the Virgen del Carmen Festival, unites communities like Paucartambo, Pisac, and Huarocondo in a tribute filled with faith, culture, and tradition. It takes place every July 15.

I think Wei would love the vibrant celebrations, and maybe one day I'll bring Mei and Wei here so they can experience this with me. For now, I'll continue to share my experiences with them through stories and photos, hoping to inspire their own sense of wanderlust.
