Echoes of the Past in Périgord Noir

Today, Mei-Ling and I embarked on a journey through time, exploring the historical depths of Périgord Noir. From the majestic Château de Hautefort to the intriguing caves of Roc de Cazelle, every moment was a step back into history, offering glimpses into the lives of those who walked this land before us. It was a day of discovery, blending architectural grandeur with the raw, untouched beauty of nature.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Relais & Châteaux - Le Vieux Logis - Dordogne in Trémolat. The setting was idyllic, a beautiful morning in the French countryside, and the breakfast was a perfect start to a day of exploration. I savored the fresh pastries and strong coffee, feeling energized for the adventures ahead. Mei-Ling enjoyed her tea while we discussed our plans for the day, both eager to immerse ourselves in the history and culture of the region. The hotel, once an old agricultural property, exuded rustic charm, and I could imagine the Giraudel family transforming it into a haven for tourists.

Our first stop was the Château de Hautefort, a magnificent structure that dominates the landscape. As we approached the château, its grandeur was immediately apparent. Originally a medieval fortress dating back to the 9th century, it was later transformed into a stately home in the 17th century. The architecture was stunning, a blend of medieval strength and classical elegance. We wandered through the formal French gardens, admiring the intricate designs and perfectly manicured hedges. The gardens offered panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, a patchwork of rolling hills and verdant forests.

History is not a burden on the memory but an illumination of the soul.

Inside the château, we explored the various rooms, each filled with period furniture and artwork. I was particularly fascinated by the history of Bertran de Born, the troubadour who once owned the castle in the 12th century. His story was one of intrigue and drama, a feud with his brother, and a siege by Richard the Lionheart. It was amazing to think that we were walking in the footsteps of such historical figures. Mei-Ling was captivated by the stories of the Baroness de Bastard, who restored the château in the 20th century after it had fallen into disrepair. Her dedication and passion were evident in every detail of the restoration. The guided tour brought the château's rich history to life, sharing tales of the families who shaped its legacy.

After immersing ourselves in the grandeur of Château de Hautefort, we drove to Les Grottes du Roc de Cazelle, a series of caves that offer a glimpse into prehistoric life. This was a completely different experience, a journey into the raw and untouched world of our ancestors. The caves were inhabited from prehistoric times through the 1960s, offering a unique perspective on the evolution of human life in this region.

As we entered the caves, I felt a sense of awe and wonder. The cool, damp air was thick with the scent of earth and stone. The recreations of prehistoric scenes were incredibly detailed, depicting the daily lives of early humans, from hunting and gathering to crafting tools and creating art. Mei-Ling was particularly impressed by the life-size mammoths and woolly rhinoceroses, which brought the Ice Age to life in a vivid and unforgettable way. We walked through the troglodytic village, carved into the rock face, imagining what it must have been like to live in such a place. The site was inhabited until the 1960s, providing a glimpse into traditional Périgord life. The displays showcased the tools, furniture, and everyday objects used by the last inhabitants of Cazelle.

For lunch, we stopped at Restaurant Le Meysset, which offered stunning views of the valley. The restaurant was perched on the hills, away from the crowds, providing a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. The panoramic terrace was particularly inviting, offering a splendid view of the surrounding landscape. The food was exquisite, a refined French cuisine with a focus on local and seasonal ingredients. I ordered the roasted cod, which was perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. Mei-Ling opted for the pan-fried beef fillet, which she declared was tender and flavorful. The chef’s expertise was evident in every dish, a testament to his passion for the culinary arts. The restaurant's commitment to eco-friendly practices was also commendable, favoring local and organic producers and composting green waste.

After our delightful lunch, we decided to indulge in a bit of shopping at AC L'Atelier Créatif 24 in Thiviers. This charming little shop offered a variety of personalized gifts and creative items, perfect for souvenirs or presents for family and friends back home. Mei-Ling was particularly drawn to the handmade jewelry, while I admired the intricate wooden carvings. We ended up buying a few small items, tokens of our time in Périgord Noir. I was impressed by the atelier's dedication to creating unique and personalized items, each crafted with care and attention to detail.

As evening approached, we made our way to Sarlat-la-Canéda for dinner at L'Assiette Sarladaise. This restaurant was located in the heart of the medieval city, offering a cozy and inviting atmosphere. We chose to sit on the shaded terrace, enjoying the lively ambiance of the city. The restaurant specialized in traditional Périgord cuisine, and we were eager to try some of the local specialties. I ordered the cassoulet, a hearty and flavorful stew made with beans, sausage, and duck confit. Mei-Ling chose the duck breast, which was cooked to perfection and served with a delicious fig sauce. The meal was a true celebration of Périgord gastronomy, a testament to the region's rich culinary heritage.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Château de Puymartin and the Marqueyssac gardens. I'm particularly excited about the gardens, which are known for their stunning views and intricate topiary. We'll also have the chance to enjoy some local cuisine at Le Saint Jean for breakfast, La Taverne Du Boucher for lunch, and Le Bistrot du Château for dinner. And perhaps, we'll end the day with a drink at La Harpe.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and wonder. Périgord Noir is a truly special place, a region rich in history, culture, and natural beauty. I am grateful for the opportunity to explore this enchanting land with Mei-Ling, and I look forward to continuing our journey tomorrow.

The region is known for events throughout the year, from truffle festivals to film festivals. And even though it's October, autumn in the Dordogne brings its own charm, with Halloween events and beautiful fall foliage.
