Cliffside Wonders of La Roque-Gageac

Today's adventure was a journey back in time, exploring a village seemingly untouched by the modern world. From ancient fortresses carved into cliffs to quaint streets echoing with history, every corner held a new discovery. It was a day of breathtaking views, delicious food, and a deep dive into the heart of Périgord Noir.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Château de la Treyne. The Green Lounge, with its views of the formal French garden, was the perfect setting to start the day. Sipping my gourmet coffee, I enjoyed the freshly baked goods. I even managed to snag a taste of Lin's juice, which she didn't seem to mind sharing. It was the best hotel breakfast I’ve ever had.

Fueled and ready, we set off to explore the Fort de La Roque-Gageac. The fort is nestled high on the cliffside, a dizzying refuge with a history stretching back to the 12th century. Climbing up, I imagined what life must have been like for those seeking shelter within its walls. The views, even with the moderate October weather, were simply stunning. The Dordogne Valley spread out before us, a tapestry of rolling hills and lush greenery. It's easy to see why this location was strategically important for centuries.

La Roque-Gageac, a village where history and nature intertwine, offering a glimpse into a world where time seems to stand still.

The climb to the top was quite the workout, especially with my camera bag, but every step was worth it. Mei-Ling and Lin enjoyed exploring the narrow passages and imagining the lives of the soldiers who once defended this stronghold. I made sure to capture every angle, knowing these photos would be a great addition to my blog. The fort was built around 1280, and its double wall made it impregnable in the Middle Ages. It served as a refuge and controlled navigation on the Dordogne. Though only ruins remain, they blend seamlessly into the rocky terrain.

After descending from the fort, we wandered into the heart of La Roque-Gageac itself. This village is officially one of the most beautiful villages in France, and it's easy to see why. The houses, built from creamy limestone and topped with lauzes slabs, exude a warm palette of yellows, ochres, and reds that shift with the daylight. Narrow streets meandered along the riverbank, lined with picturesque houses and quaint gift shops. The village has been occupied since prehistoric times, flourishing during the Gallo-Roman era due to river trade.

The microclimate here is unique, allowing exotic plants to thrive. Palm trees, cacti, and banana plants added a touch of the Mediterranean to this medieval village. I learned that the village was once a bustling river port, with flat-bottomed barges transporting goods until the arrival of the railway in the mid-19th century.

For lunch, we enjoyed a delightful meal at L'escapade des sens. The food was excellent, with delicate flavors and beautiful presentation. It was a very pleasant experience. Mei-Ling particularly enjoyed the creative dishes, while Lin was happy with her simpler, but equally delicious, meal. I made sure to sample a bit of everything, taking notes for future culinary adventures.

In the afternoon, we explored more of the village médiéval, soaking in the atmosphere and snapping photos of the charming architecture. We walked along the Dordogne River, watching the gabarres glide by, a reminder of the village's rich history as a trading port. The reflections on the water, combined with the autumn colors, created a scene straight out of a painting. I learned that in 1920, the village reclaimed its place in the spotlight when natural erosion triggered the partial collapse of the ancient fortress ruins.

As the day drew to a close, we headed to Le Moulin Du Grand Etang for dinner. This restaurant, nestled by a picturesque lake, offered a delightful gourmet experience in a casual bistrot atmosphere. The setting was superb, between water and greenery, and the service was attentive. The Chef, Arnaud Sanchez, revisits traditional bases with local products. I opted for the demi-magret, while Mei-Ling enjoyed the chou craquelin citron et spéculoos. Lin, of course, chose something with chocolate.

After dinner, we made a quick stop at Club Expression for a nightcap. It was a lively spot, filled with locals and tourists alike. I enjoyed a glass of local wine while Mei-Ling sipped on a cocktail. Lin, tired from the day's adventures, fell asleep in Mei-Ling's arms, dreaming of castles and cliffs.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude. Périgord Noir continues to surprise and delight, offering a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. I am also grateful that I get to experience these adventures with my family.

Tomorrow, we'll be venturing to Périgueux Cathedral and The Thoth Park. I'm excited to see what new discoveries await. Until then, au revoir!

With autumn in full swing, the weather in Périgord Noir has been mild, with daytime temperatures around 20°C. We’ve had a mix of sunshine and clouds, perfect for exploring the outdoors. I did forget my rain jacket, but luckily, we haven't had any major downpours yet.

During our travels, I've been reflecting on the importance of preserving cultural heritage. La Roque-Gageac is a testament to the power of community and the enduring appeal of history. It's a reminder that even in our fast-paced world, there are places where time slows down, allowing us to connect with the past and appreciate the present. I hope that through my blog, I can inspire others to seek out these hidden gems and support the preservation of these invaluable treasures.

The Périgord Noir Festival is ongoing, with various cultural events. We didn't have time to attend any specific events today, but it's something to consider for future travels.

As I prepare for our final day in Périgord Noir, I'm filled with a mix of excitement and sadness. I'm eager to explore Périgueux, but I'll also miss the charm and tranquility of this region. One thing is certain: Périgord Noir has captured my heart, and I know I'll be back someday to uncover even more of its hidden treasures.

And as I think of tomorrow, I realize how lucky I am to share these experiences with Mei-Ling and Lin. Their laughter, curiosity, and love make every adventure even more special. It's the shared memories that truly make a trip unforgettable.
