A Day of Serenity and Reflection

Today, our journey through Urbino took us beyond the city walls, offering a serene escape into nature and a reflective pause amidst historical echoes. It was a day of contrasts, balancing the invigorating sea breeze with the solemnity of Renaissance artistry. The experiences reminded me of the importance of finding harmony between the natural world and the cultural treasures we inherit.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Piadineria L'Aquilone. Mei-Ling and Lin were particularly excited to try the *crescia sfogliata*, a local flatbread. I opted for one with prosciutto and cheese, a simple yet satisfying start to the day. Lin chose a vegetarian option with grilled vegetables, a testament to her growing appreciation for fresh, local ingredients. It reminded me of our own orchard back in Kelowna, where we strive to bring the same level of care and quality to our produce. The warm, flaky bread and the fresh fillings set a perfect tone for our explorations.

With our appetites sated, we set off for Parco Naturale Monte San Bartolo. The drive itself was a treat, with the rolling hills of Le Marche unfolding before us like a tapestry. As we approached the park, the air grew noticeably fresher, carrying the scent of pine and the distant sea. The park is a gem, offering panoramic views of the Adriatic coast. We parked the car and took to the trails, eager to immerse ourselves in nature.

The trails were well-maintained, making it easy for Lin to keep up. We chose a path that meandered along the coastline, offering breathtaking views of the cliffs and the azure waters below. The landscape reminded me of the rugged coast of Taiwan, where the sea meets the mountains in a dramatic embrace. I felt a familiar sense of connection to the earth, a feeling that always grounds me, no matter where I am in the world.

Lin was particularly fascinated by the diverse flora and fauna. She spotted several birds, their calls echoing through the trees. Mei-Ling, ever the observant one, pointed out various plants and flowers, sharing her knowledge of their names and properties. I tried my hand at photography, capturing the interplay of light and shadow on the landscape. It's moments like these, when we're all engaged and connected, that make our family trips so special.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.

After a few hours of hiking, we found a secluded spot overlooking the sea and stopped for a picnic. We had packed some sandwiches, fruit, and water from a local shop in Urbino. As we ate, we watched the waves crashing against the rocks below, feeling a sense of peace and tranquility wash over us. It was a perfect moment of connection with nature, a reminder of the simple joys in life.

Leaving the invigorating embrace of nature, our afternoon was dedicated to history and reflection. We drove to the Chiesa di San Bernardino, located just a short distance from Urbino. The church, commissioned by Federico da Montefeltro as a family mausoleum, stands as a testament to Renaissance architecture and ducal ambition.

The church's exterior, with its simple brick facade, belies the artistic treasures within. As we stepped inside, we were immediately struck by the serenity of the space. The interior is bathed in soft light, creating an atmosphere of reverence and contemplation. The clean lines and harmonious proportions reflect the Renaissance ideals of balance and order.

We spent some time admiring the sarcophagi of Federico da Montefeltro and his son, Guidobaldo. The marble sculptures, though created long after their deaths, capture the dignity and power of these influential figures. I found myself reflecting on their legacy, on the impact they had on Urbino and the wider world. It's humbling to stand in the presence of such history, to contemplate the lives and achievements of those who came before us.

Mei-Ling was particularly moved by the story of Piero della Francesca's Pala di Brera, which once adorned the church's altar. The painting, now housed in Milan, depicts the Madonna and Child with Saints and Duke Federico da Montefeltro. Its absence from the church is a poignant reminder of the passage of time and the dispersal of cultural treasures.

Before heading back to Urbino, we took a moment to explore the grounds surrounding the church. The views from the hilltop were stunning, offering a panoramic perspective of the surrounding countryside. I imagined Federico da Montefeltro standing in this very spot, surveying his domain, dreaming of a city that would become a beacon of Renaissance art and culture.

As the afternoon waned, we decided to indulge in some vintage shopping. We headed to Old Garage Vintage in Urbino. Lin loves vintage clothes, so we thought this could be a nice treat for her. The shop was a treasure trove of retro fashion. Lin found a beautiful vintage dress that she absolutely loved, and Mei-Ling picked out a stylish scarf. I even found a classic leather jacket that fit me perfectly. It was a fun way to end the afternoon, a lighthearted contrast to the solemnity of the Chiesa di San Bernardino.

For dinner, we chose La Terrazza del Duca Urbino. The restaurant, located just outside the city walls, offered stunning views of the Palazzo Ducale. As we sat on the terrace, watching the sun set over the city, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for this opportunity to share these experiences with my family. The food was excellent, a mix of traditional Italian dishes and Neapolitan pizza. We shared a pizza margherita, a pasta dish with fresh seafood, and a grilled meat platter. The flavors were authentic and satisfying, a perfect complement to the breathtaking views.

As we walked back to Hotel Raffaello, the city was bathed in the soft glow of streetlights. The sounds of laughter and conversation filled the air, creating a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere. I held Mei-Ling's hand, feeling a deep sense of contentment. Today was a reminder of the beauty and richness of life, of the importance of embracing both nature and culture, of cherishing the moments we share with our loved ones.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Urbino further, taking the Trenino Turistico Urbino Explorer and visiting Porta Santa Lucia. I'm particularly looking forward to seeing more of the city's historical landmarks and learning about its rich past. I'm sure it will be another day filled with discovery and wonder.

Before I close, I must say I am glad I didn't forget my camera today, but I still regret forgetting my sunglasses and portable charger! What was I thinking?! Oh well, I’ll need to remember them tomorrow for our Trenino Turistico tour!
