Urbino's Saturday Charms

Today was a day of exploration and discovery in Urbino, a city that continues to surprise and enchant me with its rich history and artistic treasures. Mei-Ling and Lin joined me as we ventured beyond the well-trodden paths, seeking out the hidden gems that make this Renaissance town so special. Our day was filled with architectural marvels, spiritual reflections, and, of course, delightful culinary experiences.

Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Il Clemente [i]. I savored a strong espresso while Mei-Ling enjoyed a cappuccino, and Lin devoured a croissant with surprising enthusiasm. Fortified, we set out to explore the Teatro Comunale D. Bramante, a cultural landmark that I was particularly eager to visit.

Teatro Comunale D. Bramante: A Stage Through Time

The Teatro Comunale D. Bramante is a testament to Urbino’s rich artistic heritage. Originally built to replace the Teatro delle Muse, the current structure was inaugurated in 1878. As we approached, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of anticipation. The theater, named after the famous architect Donato Bramante, stands as a proud monument to the city's commitment to the arts.

The theater's history is fascinating. The original Teatro delle Muse was built in 1754, but by the late 19th century, it was clear that a new, larger venue was needed. The Teatro Comunale was built on the site of the Palazzo Benedetti, incorporating parts of the old structure. The architect from Perugia, Santini, designed the original plan, which was later modified during construction.

Unfortunately, the theater is currently undergoing restoration and was closed to the public. However, peering through the windows, I could imagine the countless performances that had graced its stage over the years. The horseshoe-shaped layout, with its three tiers of boxes and a balcony, evoked a sense of grandeur and intimacy. I made a mental note to revisit the Teatro Comunale D. Bramante when it reopens, eager to experience a performance in this historic setting. I am sure Lin would love it too.

The true spirit of travel is not about seeing new landscapes, but about seeing with new eyes.

Chiesa di San Bernardino: A Serene Escape

Next on our itinerary was the Chiesa di San Bernardino, a Franciscan church located a bit outside the city walls. The walk to the church was a pleasant one, offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. As we strolled along, I couldn't help but reflect on the tranquility of the area, a stark contrast to the bustling city center. The rolling hills and verdant landscapes were a balm to the soul, and I found myself appreciating the simple beauty of the Italian countryside.

The Chiesa di San Bernardino is a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture, commissioned by Federico da Montefeltro as a ducal mausoleum. Built between 1482 and 1491, the church is attributed to Francesco di Giorgio Martini, with some contributions from the young Donato Bramante. Its location on the San Donato hill offers a stunning view of Urbino, making it a peaceful retreat from the city's hustle and bustle.

The church's exterior is simple yet elegant, constructed with brick and adorned with sandstone details. The facade is tall and narrow, topped with a small pediment and decorative bands. Inside, the church features a Latin cross layout with a single nave that extends to a deep rectangular choir. The walls are divided into two orders by a frame, and the nave includes a cornice with an inscription dedicated to the Saint.Originally, the church housed Piero della Francesca's Brera Altarpiece, which was later moved to Milan. The sarcophagi of Federico da Montefeltro and his son Guidobaldo are also located here. The adjacent convent adds to the church's serene atmosphere with its austere Franciscan architecture.

As we stepped inside, a sense of calm washed over us. The church's interior is bathed in soft light, creating a serene and contemplative atmosphere. The clean lines and harmonious proportions of the architecture spoke to the Renaissance ideals of balance and order. I took a moment to reflect on the history of this sacred place, imagining the countless prayers and ceremonies that had taken place within its walls over the centuries. Mei-Ling lit a candle, and Lin, ever curious, gazed up at the high vaulted ceiling, her eyes wide with wonder.

A Culinary Journey

After our visit to the Chiesa di San Bernardino, we were ready for lunch. We headed to Ristorante Pizzeria Locanda Della Stazione Urbino, a local favorite known for its authentic Italian cuisine [i]. The restaurant was bustling with activity, filled with locals and tourists alike. The aroma of freshly baked pizza and simmering pasta sauces filled the air, making our mouths water in anticipation.

We ordered a variety of dishes to share, starting with a classic Margherita pizza. The crust was thin and crispy, the tomato sauce tangy and flavorful, and the mozzarella cheese melted to perfection. We also sampled the handmade pasta with wild boar ragu, a regional specialty that was rich and satisfying. Lin, never one to shy away from trying new things, even enjoyed a small portion of the ragu.

As we ate, we soaked in the lively atmosphere of the restaurant. The staff were friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home. I practiced my Italian with the waiter, stumbling over a few words but managing to convey my appreciation for the delicious food. Mei-Ling chatted with Lin about her favorite parts of the day so far, and I couldn't help but smile at their easy camaraderie.

Evening Delights at Fuoritema

As evening approached, we decided to experience Urbino's nightlife. We ventured to Fuoritema, a popular bar known for its vibrant atmosphere and creative cocktails [i, 3]. The bar was buzzing with energy, filled with locals and tourists enjoying the warm summer evening. The outdoor seating area was particularly inviting, with tables spilling out onto the cobblestone street.

I ordered a Negroni, while Mei-Ling opted for a Spritz. Lin, of course, stuck with a refreshing lemonade. As we sipped our drinks, we watched the world go by, enjoying the lively ambiance of Urbino after dark. The music was upbeat and infectious, and I found myself tapping my foot along to the rhythm. Mei-Ling and I chatted about our favorite moments from the day, while Lin entertained herself by people-watching.

Fuoritema is known for its friendly staff and excellent service, making it a great place to unwind after a day of exploring. The bar has a rating of 4.6 on Google, reflecting its popularity and quality. Visitors often praise the delicious cocktails and enjoyable atmosphere.

Before heading back to Hotel Raffaello, we enjoyed a delightful dinner at Ristorante Il Girarrosto [i]. The restaurant is known for its traditional cuisine and cozy atmosphere. I savored a perfectly cooked steak, while Mei-Ling enjoyed a vegetarian pasta dish. Lin, as always, was happy with a simple plate of spaghetti.
