A Monday of Exploration

Today was a day of reaching new heights, both literally and figuratively, as we continued our exploration of Urbino. With Mei-Ling, Lin, and I ready for adventure, we set out to discover more of what this Renaissance city had to offer. The promise of panoramic views and historical artifacts spurred us onward, and Urbino did not disappoint.

Our day began, as many good days do, with breakfast at Il Grottino. This charming spot offered a delightful start with its selection of pastries and strong Italian coffee. I always appreciate a good cup of coffee in the morning to get myself going. Lin enjoyed a chocolate-filled croissant, while Mei-Ling opted for a lighter fruit tart. Fueled up, we were ready to tackle the heights of Fortezza Albornoz.

The walk to Fortezza Albornoz was a pleasant one, winding through Urbino's picturesque streets. As we ascended, the views became increasingly breathtaking. The fortress itself is an imposing structure, and I couldn't help but imagine the historical events that had unfolded within its walls. Lin was particularly fascinated by the cannons and the stories of battles long past. The panoramic views from the top were simply stunning, offering a sweeping vista of Urbino and the surrounding countryside. It was a perfect spot for taking photos, and I snapped away, trying to capture the beauty of the landscape. Mei-Ling and I took turns pointing out landmarks to Lin, explaining a bit about the history of each one.

After soaking in the views and history at Fortezza Albornoz, we made our way to Museo Lapidario. This museum, housed in the former church of San Francesco, is a treasure trove of ancient artifacts. As someone who appreciates history, I was eager to explore the collection of Roman inscriptions, funerary stones, and architectural fragments. Lin, surprisingly, was quite engaged, asking questions about the stories behind each artifact. Mei-Ling and I did our best to answer, drawing on our limited knowledge and the museum's informative displays.

Sometimes, the most enriching experiences are found in the quiet corners of a city, where history whispers through ancient stones.

For lunch, we chose Ristorante Pizzeria Locanda Del Blasone, a charming restaurant that came highly recommended. We sat outside, enjoying the warm June weather and the lively atmosphere of Urbino. The pizza was delicious, with a perfectly crispy crust and fresh toppings. Lin, of course, opted for Margherita, while Mei-Ling and I shared a pizza with local mushrooms and sausage. It was a satisfying meal that left us feeling energized for the rest of the day.

In the afternoon, we took a leisurely stroll through the city center, browsing the shops and soaking in the ambiance. We stumbled upon Maroccini - Articoli da Regalo & Liste Nozze, a delightful gift shop with a wide array of unique items. Mei-Ling found a beautiful hand-painted ceramic bowl, which she purchased as a souvenir. Lin was drawn to a collection of colorful postcards, and she carefully selected a few to send to her friends back in Kelowna. I picked up a small leather-bound journal, hoping to capture my thoughts and reflections on our Urbino adventure.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Osteria al Tre for dinner. This cozy osteria offered a warm and inviting atmosphere, with its rustic décor and friendly staff. We started with a selection of local cheeses and cured meats, followed by pasta dishes made with fresh, seasonal ingredients. Lin tried the strozzapreti, a local pasta specialty, while Mei-Ling and I enjoyed the tagliatelle with truffle sauce. It was a memorable meal that perfectly captured the flavors of Urbino.

Walking back to Hotel Raffaello, we reflected on the day's adventures. Urbino had once again charmed us with its beauty, history, and culinary delights. As we prepared for bed, we discussed our plans for tomorrow, which include visits to the Chiesa di San Bernardino and the Abbazia di San Vincenzo al Furlo. I am also looking forward to check out the Underground PUB for a nightcap. It promises to be another exciting day of exploration and discovery. I am sure Lin is excited, as am I.

One of the highlights of the day was a small, unexpected moment that truly encapsulated the spirit of our family trip. While exploring the Museo Lapidario, Lin became particularly fascinated by a fragment of an ancient Roman inscription. She peppered me with questions about the language, the people who wrote it, and what their lives might have been like. It was a moment where her curiosity and thirst for knowledge shone brightly. As I tried my best to answer her questions, I realized that these shared moments of discovery were the true treasures of our travels. It wasn't just about seeing the sights or tasting the food; it was about connecting with each other and with the world around us in a meaningful way. It was a reminder of why we embarked on these adventures in the first place – to broaden our horizons, deepen our bonds, and create lasting memories together.

Later, as we enjoyed our dinner at Osteria al Tre, we found ourselves chatting with a local family who were seated at the next table. They were warm and welcoming, eager to share their stories and recommendations about Urbino. They told us about hidden gems that weren't listed in the guidebooks, local festivals that we shouldn't miss, and the best places to sample traditional Urbino cuisine. It was a reminder of the importance of connecting with the local community when we travel. These interactions often provide the most authentic and enriching experiences, allowing us to see a place through the eyes of its residents and gain a deeper understanding of its culture and history. It's these connections that transform a simple vacation into a truly immersive and unforgettable journey.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm struck by the way Urbino seamlessly blends its rich history with its vibrant present. Walking through the ancient streets, I feel a tangible connection to the past, imagining the artists, scholars, and rulers who once walked these same paths. Yet, at the same time, Urbino is a living, breathing city, full of energy and life. The cafes are bustling with locals chatting over coffee, the shops are filled with unique artisanal products, and the restaurants are serving up delicious, modern interpretations of traditional cuisine. It's this dynamic interplay between the old and the new that makes Urbino such a captivating destination. It's a place where you can immerse yourself in history while still enjoying all the comforts and conveniences of modern life. It's a place where you can discover something new around every corner, and where the spirit of the Renaissance continues to thrive.

Before drifting off to sleep, I took a moment to jot down some thoughts in my new leather-bound journal. As I flipped through the blank pages, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement for the adventures that still lie ahead. Tomorrow, we'll be exploring the Chiesa di San Bernardino, a beautiful church known for its stunning frescoes, and the Abbazia di San Vincenzo al Furlo, a historic abbey nestled in the picturesque Furlo Pass. I'm particularly looking forward to visiting the abbey, as it's said to be one of the most peaceful and serene places in the region. I imagine myself wandering through the ancient cloisters, listening to the gentle rustling of the leaves, and feeling a sense of connection to the monks who once called this place home. It's moments like these that make traveling so rewarding – the opportunity to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and immerse ourselves in the beauty and tranquility of the natural world.

As I closed my journal and turned off the light, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family. Traveling with Mei-Ling and Lin is always an adventure, and I cherish the memories we create together. Whether we're exploring ancient ruins, sampling local cuisine, or simply relaxing in a cozy cafe, these moments are what truly matter. They're the moments that strengthen our bonds, broaden our perspectives, and make us appreciate the beauty and diversity of the world around us. And as I drift off to sleep, I can't help but smile, knowing that tomorrow will bring even more adventures and opportunities to create lasting memories with the people I love most.
