Blue Hues and Hidden Views

Today was all about diving deeper into the heart of Chefchaouen, beyond the picture-perfect facades and into the everyday life that makes this blue city so unique. I wanted to experience what it truly means to be a local here, to find those little pockets of authenticity that guidebooks often miss. It was a day of unexpected discoveries, delightful flavors, and a deeper connection with this magical place.

My morning began with a hearty Moroccan breakfast at Restaurant Bab Kasaba. The aroma of freshly baked bread and mint tea filled the air as I settled into a cozy corner. I savored every bite of the traditional msemen, a flaky pancake drizzled with honey, while watching the town slowly awaken. It's moments like these, just observing the rhythm of daily life, that make solo travel so rewarding. This trip is all about finding moments of peace and reflection, something much needed, especially with the chaos of work and family life back in Markham. Aisha is probably missing me terribly, but I know Umar is doing a great job keeping her entertained with online bingo and her favourite Nigerian dishes.

With a full stomach and a sense of purpose, I set out to find the Lavadero de la Ciudad. This public washhouse, a short walk from Bab El Onsar, offered a glimpse into a centuries-old tradition. As I approached, I could hear the gentle sounds of water and the murmur of women chatting as they washed their clothes in the flowing waters of Ras El Ma valley. It was a vibrant scene, a tableau of daily life that has remained unchanged for generations. I watched as they expertly scrubbed and rinsed, their movements practiced and efficient. The air was filled with the fresh scent of soap and the earthy aroma of the surrounding landscape. This is where the Berber women come down from the mountains to wash their clothes, just like their grandmothers and great-grandmothers did. It was fascinating to watch them wash carpets and wring them out together.

I took a seat at a nearby cafe, sipping on a refreshing pomegranate juice, and simply observed. The scene was incredibly photogenic, with the blue walls of the town providing a stunning backdrop to the colorful clothes and the women's vibrant attire. I couldn't resist capturing a few shots, trying to capture the essence of this timeless tradition. It felt like stepping back in time, a reminder of the simple, unhurried pace of life that still exists in this corner of the world.

Next on my list was the Tetuan Modern Art Center. A short bus ride away, this museum offered a stark contrast to the traditional scenes I had witnessed earlier. Housed in a magnificent Spanish-castle-like building that was once the railway station to Ceuta, the museum boasts a collection of modern paintings and sculptures. As someone who appreciates art, I was eager to explore the works of Moroccan artists and gain a deeper understanding of the country's contemporary art scene.

The museum was quiet, almost deserted, which allowed me to fully immerse myself in the art. The building itself is worth a visit. The collection was diverse, showcasing a range of styles and mediums. Some pieces were thought-provoking, others were simply beautiful, but all offered a unique perspective on Moroccan culture and identity. I was particularly drawn to a series of abstract paintings that seemed to capture the vibrant colors and textures of Chefchaouen itself. It's amazing how artists can interpret and translate their surroundings onto canvas, offering a fresh lens through which to view the world. I spent a couple of hours wandering through the galleries, lost in contemplation and appreciation. It was a welcome change of pace, a moment to engage my mind and appreciate the creative spirit that thrives in this region.

For lunch, I ventured to Mounir Food, a local spot recommended for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. I decided to try their kefta and a traditional Moroccan salad. The staff were friendly and the atmosphere was cozy, making me feel right at home. While some reviews mention that the prices may be inflated, the food was tasty and the experience was enjoyable.

As the afternoon wore on, I decided to treat myself to a little relaxation at Mandala, a local bar known for its laid-back vibe. I ordered a refreshing drink and settled into a comfortable seat, soaking in the atmosphere. The decor was eclectic, with colorful lanterns and comfortable seating creating a welcoming space. I struck up a conversation with a local artist who shared stories about Chefchaouen's artistic community and the challenges they face. It was fascinating to hear his perspective, to learn about the struggles and triumphs of creating art in a place that is both inspiring and challenging.

For dinner, I chose The Magic Lamp House of Aladin, drawn in by its enchanting atmosphere and the promise of delicious Moroccan cuisine. As the name suggests, the restaurant exuded a magical ambiance, with traditional Moroccan decor and warm, inviting lighting. I ordered a tagine, a classic Moroccan dish, and savored every bite as I listened to the gentle sounds of traditional music. The service was attentive, and the staff made me feel like a valued guest. The rooftop terrace offered stunning panoramic views of the city, allowing me to enjoy my meal while taking in the scenic beauty of the medina and the surrounding mountains. The Magic Lamp House of Aladin is not just a place to eat; it is a delightful escape into Moroccan culture and hospitality that leaves a lasting impression.

As the day drew to a close, I reflected on my experiences. Today was a reminder that travel is about more than just seeing the sights; it's about connecting with people, experiencing different cultures, and discovering hidden gems that make a place unique. I am glad I got to see the local life in Chefchaouen. I am also glad to be able to enjoy the art scene. All of these experiences add to the richness of my journey.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore Bab El Ain and Jamaa. I am also looking forward to visiting B & H Art Shop. I am excited to see what other treasures Chefchaouen holds.
