Solo Cultural Exploration in Shirakawa-go
Day 4: A Day of Serenity: Exploring Shirakawa-go's Hidden Ponds
Discover the tranquil beauty of Shirakawa-go's Midorigaike and Water Lily Ponds, a peaceful escape into nature's embrace in the heart of Japan.
Reflections on Tranquility
Today was a day dedicated to finding serenity in the heart of Shirakawa-go. Leaving the iconic Gassho-style farmhouses behind for a few hours, I ventured into the quieter corners of this UNESCO World Heritage site. My mission: to explore the Midorigaike Pond and the Water Lily Pond, two hidden gems promising respite and natural beauty. It was a welcome change of pace, a chance to reflect amidst the lush landscapes of rural Japan, and a reminder of why I embarked on this solo journey in the first place.
The morning started with a hearty breakfast at Arai. This cozy restaurant, run by a lovely older lady, is conveniently located near the bus station. I opted for the Hida beef set, a local specialty I couldn't resist. The beef was tender and juicy, perfectly complemented by the simple yet flavorful tofu and side dishes. It was a comforting start to the day, fueling me for the explorations ahead. It reminded me of the simple, hearty meals Jana, Maximilian and I enjoy during our hiking trips in the Czech Republic.
Nature always wears the colors of the spirit.
With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off towards Midorigaike Pond. The journey involved a bus ride followed by a pleasant 20-minute walk through the countryside. The air was fresh, carrying the scent of damp earth and distant wildflowers. As I walked, I couldn't help but think about Maximilian. He would have loved running along these paths, his boundless energy finding an outlet in the open fields. I made a mental note to bring him here someday, to share this experience with my son.
Reaching Midorigaike Pond was like stepping into a painting. The water was a vibrant emerald green, reflecting the surrounding forests and mountains like a mirror. The pond was encircled by well-maintained paths, inviting visitors to take a leisurely stroll and soak in the beauty. I spent a good hour simply walking around the pond, stopping frequently to capture the stunning views with my camera. The tranquility was palpable; the only sounds were the gentle rustling of leaves and the occasional chirping of birds. It was a perfect spot for reflection, a place to clear my mind and appreciate the simple wonders of nature.

After immersing myself in the serene beauty of Midorigaike Pond, I made my way back towards the village center, eager to discover the Water Lily Pond. Located near the Wada House, the Water Lily Pond offered a different, yet equally captivating experience. The pond was covered in lush green lily pads, dotted with delicate white and pink blossoms. The scene was incredibly picturesque, a haven for nature lovers and photographers alike. I spent some time observing the intricate details of the water lilies, marveling at their delicate beauty and resilience.

Lunch was at Masuzono Bunsuke, a charming restaurant known for its fresh river fish dishes. The restaurant itself is housed in a traditional folk house, adding to the authentic Japanese experience. I opted for the Masuen set menu, which included grilled salted char, rainbow trout sashimi, and fried masu trout. The fish was incredibly fresh, with a delicate flavor that was enhanced by the simple yet skillful preparation. It was a delightful culinary experience, a true taste of the local cuisine. What struck me most was the freshness; the chef actually catches the fish from a pond right after receiving the order. The sashimi was particularly good, reminding me of salmon but with a unique, subtle flavor. I could almost taste the pure spring water in which the fish were raised.
As the afternoon progressed, I decided to treat myself to a drink at Tenshukaku, a bar offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Perched atop Shiroyama Hill, Tenshukaku provided a panoramic vista of the Gassho-style farmhouses and the lush green fields. I savored a local beer while taking in the breathtaking scenery, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such beauty. The view was simply incredible. From up there, the entire village looked like a meticulously crafted miniature, a testament to the harmony between nature and human ingenuity.
For dinner, I chose Gassho, a restaurant known for its traditional Japanese cuisine and picturesque setting. I enjoyed a delicious meal of Hida beef and local vegetables, savoring the flavors of the region. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, making it a perfect end to a day of exploration. Gassho is located near the Seseragi parking lot and, like many establishments in Shirakawa-go, offers a souvenir corner. It's a great place to pick up a memento of your visit.
As the day drew to a close, I found myself reflecting on the experiences I had gathered. Shirakawa-go had once again revealed its magic, offering moments of peace and tranquility amidst its stunning landscapes. The Midorigaike Pond and the Water Lily Pond were hidden gems, providing a welcome escape from the crowds and a chance to connect with nature. The delicious local cuisine and the warm hospitality of the locals added to the charm of this unique destination.
Tomorrow, I plan to delve deeper into the cultural aspects of Shirakawa-go, with visits to the Jin Homura Art Museum and the Shirakawago Three Houses. I'm particularly interested in exploring the art museum, as it promises a blend of traditional and contemporary works. I also intend to visit Shin ge do, a local shop, to explore traditional crafts.
Before heading back to my guesthouse, I took one last look at the illuminated farmhouses, their silhouettes casting long shadows against the darkening sky. It was a scene of unparalleled beauty, a reminder of the timeless charm of Shirakawa-go.
As I sit here, penning down my thoughts, I realize that this solo journey is not just about ticking off destinations on a map. It's about finding moments of connection, reflection, and appreciation. It's about discovering the beauty that lies hidden in the simplest of things, and sharing those discoveries with the world. And as I prepare for another day of exploration, I carry with me the serenity of the ponds, the flavors of the local cuisine, and the warmth of the Japanese hospitality. Shirakawa-go, you have once again captured my heart.
