A Day of Discovery in Shirakawa-go
Today was a day of diving deeper into the heart of Shirakawa-go, a village that continues to enchant me with its timeless beauty and unique cultural heritage. As a software engineer, I often find myself drawn to the intricate details and innovative solutions of the past, and Shirakawa-go, with its Gassho-style farmhouses, offers a fascinating glimpse into a world where architecture and nature coexist in perfect harmony. I was eager to explore the local art scene, delve into the architectural marvels, and, of course, indulge in the authentic flavors of the region.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Soba Wakimoto. The reviews I had read mentioned that it gets quite crowded, especially during peak season, but arriving early paid off. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and I was immediately handed an English menu, which was a thoughtful touch. I decided to try their signature soba with Hida beef. The soba noodles were delicious, but the Hida beef was the star of the show – incredibly tender and flavorful, with a sauce that had just the right balance of savory and sweet. It was a perfect way to start the day, fueling me up for the adventures ahead.
Next on my list was the Jin Homura Art Museum. Located a short walk from the village parking lot, the museum is housed in a traditional Gassho-style building, which in itself is a work of art. Jin Homura, the artist, lived in this house and used it as his studio for about 20 years. He then donated the building and his works to the village. The contrast between the contemporary art pieces and the traditional architecture was striking. Homura's art, characterized by vivid colors and dynamic strokes, was inspired by the Gassho-style house itself. It was fascinating to see how the local environment influenced his artistic expression.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
After immersing myself in the world of art, I made my way to the Shirakawago Three Houses. These iconic Gassho-style farmhouses are a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of the people who built them. The steeply pitched thatched roofs are designed to withstand the heavy snowfall that this region experiences during the winter months. As I wandered through the village, I couldn't help but marvel at the craftsmanship and attention to detail that went into these structures. It's incredible to think that these houses have stood the test of time for centuries, providing shelter and warmth to generations of families. It was fascinating to learn about the history and cultural significance of these houses, each with its own unique story to tell. One of the houses even had a small exhibition showcasing local traditions, including silk weaving. It was a great opportunity to learn more about the local culture and customs.

For lunch, I decided to try Kita no Sho, a restaurant that has been standing for 250 years! Nestled in a traditional Gassho-style building, the restaurant offered a unique dining experience. I opted for the Hoba Miso Plate, a local specialty featuring Hida beef grilled on a magnolia leaf with miso paste. The combination of flavors was incredible, and the aroma of the miso filled the air, creating a truly memorable culinary experience. It was a perfect way to refuel and recharge before continuing my exploration of the village.

After lunch, I strolled through the village, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere and admiring the surrounding scenery. The lush greenery and blooming flowers added a vibrant touch to the landscape, making it a perfect setting for a leisurely walk. I couldn't resist stopping by Shin ge do, a charming souvenir shop that sells original handmade products and local folk crafts. I picked up a few small gifts for Jana and Maximilian, wanting to bring a piece of Shirakawa-go back home to them. I also enjoyed a cup of coffee there. The shop owner was very friendly. He told me about the local dialect. It was a delightful way to end the afternoon.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Nomura for dinner. This cozy soba noodle shop is known for its freshly made soba noodles, made from buckwheat flour sourced from local farms. I ordered a bowl of their signature soba, and it was simply divine. The noodles were perfectly cooked, with a delicate texture and a subtle nutty flavor. The broth was rich and savory, and the overall experience was incredibly satisfying. It was a perfect way to end a day of culinary exploration.

Tomorrow, I plan to venture further afield and visit Hida Takayama, another charming town in the Japanese Alps. I'm particularly interested in visiting the Hida Takayama Activity and Exchange Hall and the Takayama Jinya, which I've heard are both fascinating historical sites. I'm also looking forward to trying some of the local cuisine in Takayama. I've heard that the Hida beef is particularly good there, so I'll definitely be on the lookout for that. I might even stop by Kita no Sho again, but this time for a drink at their bar.
Reflecting on today, I feel incredibly grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and culture of Shirakawa-go. It's a place that has truly captured my heart, and I know that I'll cherish these memories for years to come. As I prepare for my adventures in Hida Takayama tomorrow, I can't help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation. Japan continues to surprise and delight me at every turn, and I'm eager to see what tomorrow brings. This solo trip is proving to be exactly what I needed – a chance to reconnect with myself, explore new horizons, and gain a deeper appreciation for the world around me. I am missing Jana and Max, but I know they would want me to enjoy every moment of this adventure. Perhaps one day, we can all return together and experience the magic of Shirakawa-go as a family.
The charm of Shirakawa-go lies not only in its stunning landscapes and architectural marvels but also in the warmth and hospitality of its people. Each encounter, each meal, each moment spent in this enchanting village has left an indelible mark on my soul. It's a reminder that sometimes, the greatest adventures are found in the simplest of places, and that the most meaningful connections are often forged through shared experiences and genuine human interaction. As I continue my journey through Japan, I carry with me the spirit of Shirakawa-go, a reminder to embrace the present moment, to appreciate the beauty that surrounds me, and to always remain open to the wonders of the world.
As I settle in for the night, I can't help but feel a sense of contentment and gratitude. The memories of today's adventures flood my mind, from the vibrant colors of the Jin Homura Art Museum to the savory flavors of the Hoba Miso Plate. Shirakawa-go has a way of captivating the senses and stirring the soul, leaving a lasting impression that transcends the boundaries of time and space. It's a place where the past and the present intertwine, where tradition and innovation coexist, and where the beauty of nature is celebrated in all its glory. And as I drift off to sleep, I dream of the Gassho-style farmhouses, standing tall and proud against the backdrop of the majestic Japanese Alps, a symbol of resilience, harmony, and the enduring spirit of the human heart. It is also a reminder that I need to buy a raincoat, travel adapter and sunscreen as soon as I can!
