Solo Cultural Exploration in Shirakawa-go
Day 7: Art, History, and Culinary Delights: A Day of Discovery in Takayama
Explore Takayama's art scene, historic teahouse district, and savor local cuisine on a solo journey through Japan's cultural heartland.
A Day of Exploration in Takayama
Today was a delightful immersion into the art, history, and culinary traditions of Takayama. It's amazing how much this charming city has to offer, and I was eager to soak it all in. Leaving Shirakawa-go early, I took a scenic train ride to Takayama, excited to experience a new facet of Japan's cultural landscape.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Shiawaseya Kichibei. Tucked away in a quiet corner, this charming spot was the perfect place to start my day. The traditional Japanese breakfast set was a feast for the senses, featuring grilled fish, miso soup, pickled vegetables, and fluffy rice. The flavors were subtle yet satisfying, providing a gentle energy boost for the adventures ahead. It reminded me of breakfasts back home with Jana and Maximilian, though I must admit, I missed their lively chatter.
Art Nouveau and Deco Dreams
Next on my itinerary was the Hida Takayama Museum of Art. The museum's collection of Art Nouveau and Art Deco pieces was truly impressive. As someone who appreciates both art and history, I found the exhibits fascinating, especially the glassware and furniture from the early 20th century. The intricate designs and craftsmanship were a testament to the skill of the artisans. I was particularly captivated by a monumental glass fountain that once graced the Champs-Élysées in Paris. It's amazing to think of the journey these pieces have taken to end up in this serene corner of Japan. Wandering through the museum, I was struck by how art transcends cultural boundaries, speaking to universal themes of beauty and creativity.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
Stepping Back in Time at Nishi Chaya District
After immersing myself in art, I ventured into the Nishi Chaya District, one of Kanazawa's beautifully preserved teahouse districts. Although a little outside of Takayama, the journey was more than worth it to experience this historical gem. Established in 1820, this district once thrived as an entertainment area where geiko (the local term for geisha) entertained wealthy patrons with music, dance, and games. Walking along the main street, lined with traditional wooden teahouses, I felt like I had stepped back in time. The atmosphere was enchanting, with the gentle sounds of shamisen music drifting from the teahouses.

Many of the buildings now house sweet shops and cafes, offering a delightful blend of old and new. I explored the Nishi-Chaya Museum, which provided a glimpse into the lives of the geiko who once worked here. The well-appointed rooms and historical artifacts offered a fascinating insight into this unique aspect of Japanese culture. I also learned about Seijiro Shimada, a famous author who grew up in this district and drew inspiration from his surroundings. It’s incredible to think that such a tranquil place could have been the backdrop for so much history and artistry. I even popped into a small coffee stand called MAMEノマノマ (noma noma) and enjoyed a superb cup of coffee, admiring the traditional warehouse behind it along a tiny stream. It was the perfect way to soak in the atmosphere of the district.
A Culinary Journey
For lunch, I decided on Hiiragi, a local restaurant known for its regional cuisine. The restaurant had a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly. I opted for the Hida beef skewer set, which was a true culinary delight. The beef was tender and flavorful, perfectly complemented by the sweet and savory sauce. The set also included a side of soba noodles, which were light and refreshing. It was a satisfying and authentic taste of the region. The meal reminded me of some of the hearty dishes Jana prepares, always with a touch of Czech flair.

In the late afternoon, I spent some time browsing the shops along the main street. I stumbled upon Ebisu-ya, a charming store that specializes in local crafts and souvenirs. While there seem to be a couple of shops with this name, I'm pretty sure this was the one in Shirakawa-go. The store was filled with an array of unique items, from handmade pottery to traditional textiles. I picked up a few small gifts for Jana and Maximilian, hoping to bring a piece of Takayama back to them. I know Maximilian would adore a little wooden toy I spotted, and Jana would appreciate the delicate floral patterns on a handcrafted scarf.

A Memorable Dinner
As evening approached, I made my way to Hidaji for dinner. This restaurant is a bit outside of Takayama, nestled in the tranquil Northern Alps, and it promised an exceptional dining experience. Hidaji is known for its traditional Japanese-style accommodations and exquisite cuisine, and it certainly lived up to its reputation. The multi-course kaiseki dinner was a work of art, with each dish carefully prepared and beautifully presented. The flavors were complex and nuanced, showcasing the best of local and seasonal ingredients. The chef took the time to explain each dish, sharing the inspiration and significance behind it. It was like having a private dining experience with a culinary master. From the delicate sake pairings to the perfectly cooked Hida beef, every aspect of the meal was impeccable.

One of the most memorable dishes was the ayu (sweetfish), which was grilled to perfection and bursting with flavor. The chef had even foraged some of the mushrooms himself, and they were unlike anything I had ever tasted. The experience was truly exceptional, and I felt grateful to have had the opportunity to savor such exquisite cuisine. The reviews I had read about Hidaji were spot on – it's a must-visit for anyone seeking an authentic and unforgettable culinary experience in Takayama. The staff were incredibly attentive, making me feel welcomed and valued.
Reflections on the Day
As I reflect on today's adventures, I am struck by the beauty and richness of Takayama. From the art museum to the teahouse district to the culinary delights, every experience has been a feast for the senses. It's a city that seamlessly blends tradition and modernity, offering a glimpse into Japan's past while embracing its future. I feel grateful to have had the opportunity to explore this hidden gem and to immerse myself in its unique culture. Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Jinya-mae Morning Markets and the Yoshijima Traditional House, eager to discover more of Takayama's treasures. I might even treat myself to a drink at Shirakawago Restaurant Irori in the evening, to unwind after another day of exploration.
This solo journey continues to be a profound experience, allowing me to connect with new places and cultures on a deeper level. While I miss Jana and Maximilian dearly, I know that these experiences will enrich our lives in countless ways. And who knows, maybe one day I'll bring them back to Takayama to share in the magic of this enchanting city.
“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” It’s a sentiment that resonates deeply as I continue to explore the wonders of Japan, one day at a time.
Until tomorrow,
Christian
