Stepping Back in Time in Takayama

Today, I traded my keyboard for cobblestone streets and my IDE for historical insights. Takayama, often dubbed Little Kyoto, truly lived up to its name. The well-preserved Edo-era architecture and the palpable sense of history made it a day of immersion and discovery. It's amazing how different a place can feel compared to the tech-centric world I usually inhabit.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Hakusuien. The traditional Japanese breakfast set me up perfectly for a day of exploration. I particularly enjoyed the cold soba, a refreshing start to a day that promised to be filled with new experiences. It reminded me a bit of Jana's attempts to make soba at home – though I must admit, this was far superior.

First on the itinerary was the Hida Takayama Activity and Exchange Hall. This place was a delightful surprise. I'm not usually one for touristy activities, but I found myself genuinely intrigued by the prospect of learning about traditional crafts. The hall offers visitors the chance to work with paper, straw, wood, and cloth to create unique souvenirs. I decided to try my hand at making a Sarubobo doll, the cute faceless doll unique to the Hida region. It was surprisingly challenging, but with the help of a local artisan, I managed to create something I was actually quite proud of. It's a far cry from coding, but there's something satisfying about working with your hands.

Next, I ventured to Takayama Jinya, the former government building. It's the only one of its kind remaining in Japan, and stepping inside felt like stepping back in time. The building served as the local government office for over two centuries, and the well-preserved architecture and artifacts offered a captivating glimpse into the Edo period. I wandered through the rooms, imagining the officials who once worked there, managing the land and dispensing justice. The courtroom, in particular, was fascinating, with its austere atmosphere and the faint echo of past judgments.

I took my time exploring the meticulously maintained paths, finding a quiet spot amidst the traditional Japanese flora. The soothing sound of water flowing through the stone lanterns provided a perfect opportunity for reflection. I thought about the historical significance of the site and the dedication required to preserve such a treasure.

Lunch was at Morizen, a local spot known for its Hida beef. I opted for a Hida beef bowl, and it was absolutely delicious. The beef was tender and flavorful, and the rice was perfectly cooked. It was a simple meal, but it was incredibly satisfying. I overheard some other tourists complaining about rude service, but my experience was perfectly pleasant. Maybe it helped that I tried out some of my Czech-accented Japanese phrases.

After lunch, I spent some time wandering through the streets of Takayama, soaking up the atmosphere. The traditional wooden houses, the sake breweries, and the artisan shops all contributed to the town's unique charm. I couldn't resist stopping at a few shops to pick up some souvenirs for Jana and Maximilian. I found a beautiful silk scarf for Jana and a wooden toy for Maximilian. I hope they'll appreciate them.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Shiraogi for dinner. The restaurant is known for its Hida beef set, and I was eager to try it. The beef was indeed tender and flavorful, melting in my mouth. The meal was a perfect end to a day of exploration. I savored each bite, reflecting on the day's experiences.

To cap off the evening, I decided to visit Kita no Sho, a local bar. I'm not usually one for nightlife, but I wanted to experience a bit of Takayama's evening atmosphere. The bar was cozy and inviting, and I enjoyed a glass of local sake while chatting with the bartender. He shared some interesting stories about the town and its history. It was a nice way to unwind after a long day.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Hida Takayama Museum of Art and explore the Nishi Chaya District. I'm looking forward to another day of discovery in this charming town.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience such a unique and fascinating place. Takayama has truly captured my heart, and I know I'll cherish these memories for years to come. It's a reminder that sometimes, the best way to recharge is to step away from the digital world and immerse yourself in history and culture. Maybe I should convince Jana to join me on my next solo adventure.

Takayama, with its echoes of the Edo period, has been more than just a stop on my itinerary; it’s been a journey into the heart of Japan’s soul. From crafting a Sarubobo doll to wandering through the historic Takayama Jinya, every moment felt like a step back in time. As I prepare for tomorrow's exploration of the Hida Takayama Museum of Art and the Nishi Chaya District, I carry with me the quiet wisdom of this ancient town, a reminder that the past is always present, waiting to be discovered.

It's funny, isn't it? Here I am, a software engineer, finding solace and inspiration in centuries-old traditions. Perhaps there's a lesson in that for all of us. Maybe we all need to disconnect from our screens and reconnect with the world around us. Maybe we all need a little bit of Takayama in our lives.

I'm looking forward to seeing what tomorrow brings.
