Kyoto's Modern Wonders

Today was a fascinating blend of old and new, a journey through Kyoto that touched on its modern achievements and its enduring culinary traditions. It’s amazing how this city manages to honor its past while embracing the future. I am so happy to be sharing these experiences with my friends.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Kyoto GOJO ONO. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere and the food was delicious. I opted for the French cuisine, which was a delightful fusion of Kyoto’s local ingredients and classic French techniques. It was a unique way to start the day, and it fueled us up for our adventures.

Next on the agenda was the Kyoto Railway Museum. As someone who appreciates history and culture, I was excited to delve into Japan's railway heritage. The museum is expansive, showcasing a wide array of locomotives and railway cars from different eras. It was fascinating to see the evolution of train technology and learn about the impact of railways on Japanese society. James, ever the engineer at heart, was in his element, pointing out all sorts of technical details that I would have missed. I found myself particularly drawn to the exhibits on the Shinkansen, the iconic bullet train, which represents Japan's commitment to innovation and efficiency. The kids would have loved the hands-on exhibits and the miniature railway diorama. I made a mental note to bring Eglė here someday; she would be thrilled.

The journey through Kyoto's modern marvels is a testament to the city's ability to blend tradition with progress, creating a unique and captivating experience.

After immersing ourselves in railway history, we headed to Kyoto Tower, another modern landmark in this ancient city. Standing tall near Kyoto Station, the tower offers panoramic views of Kyoto and the surrounding landscape. The observation deck provided a stunning 360-degree vista, allowing us to appreciate the city's layout and the juxtaposition of traditional temples and modern buildings. I spotted several landmarks we had visited earlier in the trip, like Kiyomizu-dera and Fushimi Inari Shrine, which gave me a sense of perspective and connection to the city. The tower itself is located above a commercial building with souvenir shops and restaurants. I had read that the tower is often illuminated in different colors to celebrate various events and seasons, creating a magical atmosphere. While there weren't any special illuminations today, the clear views were a treat in themselves.

Lunch was at Anzukko, a charming gyoza restaurant. The place was small and intimate, with a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. We ordered a variety of gyoza, each with its unique flavor and filling. I particularly enjoyed the crispy, pan-fried gyoza with a savory pork and vegetable filling. The hubby and wife team were very friendly and they had a decent range of sake, cocktails and beer. The fragile crunchy layer on the pan side and they are flipped for service so that you have to crack through it like a thin layer of brulee to break the gyoza apart. The filling was moist and flavoursome with a slight hint of spice, perhaps cinnamon and coriander, making them slightly more aromatic than regular gyoza. They were delicious. It was a perfect midday treat that gave us a taste of local cuisine.

In the afternoon, we explored Kyoto Station, a modern architectural marvel in its own right. The station is more than just a transportation hub; it's a destination in itself, with shops, restaurants, and even a hotel. We spent some time browsing the shops at Kyoto Porta, a vast underground shopping mall beneath the station. I was on the lookout for souvenirs and gifts for family back home, and the mall offered a wide variety of options, from traditional crafts to modern goods. I ended up buying some beautiful silk scarves and handcrafted ceramics, which I knew my mother would appreciate. We also ventured into The Cube Shopping Mall, which occupies three floors on the north west side of the station building. On the first floor and first basement floor (B1) you will find Kyoto confectionery and souvenir shops. This is a very handy area for picking up souvenirs unique to Kyoto before you depart for your next destination. On the second basement floor (B2) are ladies' fashion boutiques and cosmetics stores. I found a lovely tea set for my sister, complete with matcha powder and a traditional whisk.

As evening approached, we made our way to Kikuichimonjushirokanenaga honten for dinner. This restaurant is known for its authentic Kyoto cuisine and traditional atmosphere. The restaurant had a serene ambiance, with tatami mats, shoji screens, and carefully arranged floral displays. We were seated in a private room, which added to the intimate and immersive experience. The dinner was a multi-course kaiseki meal, with each dish meticulously prepared and beautifully presented. The flavors were delicate and refined, showcasing the freshest seasonal ingredients. It was a culinary journey that engaged all the senses, and I savored every moment. I will say that the sashimi fish courses were very chewy and the night continued down the path of very unpleasant texture and mild flavour. I know this is rooted in tradition but the sashimi fish courses were very chewy. Overall, the menus stay fresh with brilliant twists and surprising elements based on the Kyo-kaiseki.

And the culinary experiences, from the French-inspired breakfast to the authentic kaiseki dinner, reflect the diversity and richness of Kyoto's food scene.

Tomorrow marks the last day of our trip, and we plan to visit Fushimi Inari Taisha, Tōfuku-ji Temple, and Yasui Kompiragū Shrine. I’m looking forward to soaking in the last bits of Kyoto’s magic before we head back home. We might even pop into Kyoto Star Bar for a farewell drink. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m grateful for the memories we’ve made.

As I prepare for our final day in Kyoto, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the experiences we've shared. This trip has been more than just a vacation; it's been a cultural immersion that has enriched our lives and strengthened our bonds. I am so glad I was able to share this time with my friends.

One thing I almost forgot! There is a sake fest at the Kyoto Tower Sand B1F FOOD HALL from May 2nd to 6th. It is supposed to be a lot of fun and has sake from 11 popular breweries in Kyoto. I am sad that we will be missing it!
