Day 8: A Day of Temples, Shrines, and Geisha in Gion: Kyoto's Cultural Heartbeat
Explore Kyoto's spiritual side with visits to Kodaiji Temple and Yasaka Shrine, then immerse yourself in Gion's geisha district. A day of culture!
Kyoto's Enchanting Embrace
Today was a day of diving deep into the cultural heart of Kyoto. From serene temples to vibrant shrines and the captivating geisha district of Gion, every moment felt like stepping further into a world of ancient traditions and timeless beauty. It’s days like these that remind me why I love to travel – to lose myself in the charm and history of a place so different from my own.
Our day began with a delightful vegan breakfast at AIN SOPH. Journey KYOTO. I must admit, finding a fully vegan restaurant in Kyoto felt like a small miracle. James, ever the supportive husband, was game to try anything, and we both thoroughly enjoyed our meals. I opted for the matcha pancakes, fluffy and delicious, while James went for the soy cutlets. Fuelled up and ready to explore, we set off for our first stop: Kodaiji Temple.

Kodaiji Temple was simply breathtaking. The Zen garden, with its meticulously raked gravel and perfectly placed stones, exuded tranquility. It was easy to see why the garden is nationally recognized for its beauty. We wandered through the temple grounds, admiring the architecture and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. The spring special exhibition was underway, with illuminated cherry blossoms creating a magical ambiance. It reminded me of the cherry blossom festivals back in Toronto, but there was something uniquely special about experiencing it in Kyoto. I couldn't help but reflect on how much I miss Eglė during these moments, wishing she could experience this beauty with us. I know she would have loved to capture the scenery with her camera.
To see the world, things dangerous to come to, to see behind walls, draw closer, to find each other, and to feel. That is the purpose of life.
Next on our itinerary was Yasaka Shrine, a vibrant contrast to the serene temple. This Shinto shrine was bustling with activity, and the air was filled with the scent of incense and the sounds of prayers. I learned that Yasaka Shrine is known for its summer Gion Matsuri, one of Japan's largest festivals. Though we were visiting in spring, I could feel the energy and excitement that this festival brings to the city. I made a small offering and said a prayer for my family's health and happiness. It's a tradition I've carried with me ever since my first trip abroad.

After the shrine, we made our way to Kyoto Crafts Store. I was eager to find a unique souvenir to bring back home. The store was a treasure trove of traditional crafts, from delicate ceramics to intricate textiles. I spent a good hour browsing the shelves, admiring the skill and artistry of the local artisans. I finally settled on a beautiful silk scarf with a cherry blossom design, a perfect reminder of our trip. The Kyoto Handicraft Center is indeed a great place to understand traditional crafts.

Lunch was at Komefuku, a restaurant known for its authentic Japanese cuisine. We indulged in a delicious tempura and seafood set. It was a delightful experience, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. The restaurant’s interior created a peaceful dining atmosphere, perfect for a relaxing midday meal. I must say, Komefuku stands as a culinary haven in Kyoto. James and I were eager to indulge in the traditional Japanese dining, savoring the freshest ingredients prepared in time-honored styles. The seafood was incredibly fresh, and the tempura was perfectly crispy. I made a mental note to try to recreate some of these dishes back home in Toronto – though I knew it wouldn't be quite the same without the authentic Japanese ingredients.

In the late afternoon, we ventured into Gion Corner, Kyoto's famed geisha district. The narrow streets were lined with traditional wooden machiya houses, and the atmosphere was thick with anticipation. I had always been fascinated by the world of geisha, and I was thrilled to have the opportunity to witness a traditional performance at Gion Corner. The performance showcased a variety of traditional Japanese arts, including Kyomai dance, Chanoyu tea ceremony, Ikebana flower arrangement, Koto music, Bugaku dance, Kyogen comedy, Bunraku puppet show, and Noh play. It was a captivating display of skill and artistry, and I left with a newfound appreciation for the dedication and discipline required to master these ancient arts. It was a great way to experience traditional Japanese culture in an hour.

As the day drew to a close, we headed to Jiki Miyazawa for dinner. This Michelin-starred restaurant offered a refined and innovative take on Japanese cuisine. We opted for the chef's tasting menu, and each dish was a work of art. The flavors were complex and nuanced, and the presentation was impeccable. The chef clearly had a passion for his craft, and it was a joy to watch him work. It was a perfect end to a perfect day. The sesame tofu and freshly cooked rice were especially delightful.

Reflecting on the day, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience Kyoto's rich culture and history. From the serene temples to the vibrant shrines and the captivating geisha district, every moment was a feast for the senses. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow, when we plan to visit Rengeō-in (Sanjūsangen-dō) Temple, Toji Temple, and Kyoto Tower. I am also excited to visit Concrete Bar in the evening.
I am also eagerly anticipating the Gion Festival in July, which I learned is held at Yasaka Shrine. I will definitely make sure to secure a good viewing spot early in the day. Though it is outside the cherry blossom season, I am also interested in seeing the Yabusame at Shimogamo Shrine on May 3rd, a traditional event where archers shoot targets while riding on horseback.
“The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.” As I prepare for another day of exploration, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to turn another page in this incredible journey.
Tonight, I'll fall asleep dreaming of temples, shrines, and geisha, and wake up ready for another day of adventure. Until then, ojasvydziu (sweet dreams) from Kyoto!
