Charming Kyoto: A Cultural Adventure with Friends
Day 9: Kyoto's Cultural Depths: A Day of Temples and Towering Views
Exploring Kyoto's ancient temples, serene gardens, and modern heights with friends, creating unforgettable memories in Japan.
Spiritual Sanctuaries and City Skylines
Today in Kyoto was a beautiful blend of the ancient and the modern. From the serene halls of thousand-armed Kannon statues to the panoramic views from Kyoto Tower, it was a day of contrasts and connections, experienced with cherished friends. It's amazing how much history and modernity can coexist in this captivating city.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Teppan Tavern Tenamonya. It was such a cozy place, run by a friendly couple. The food was delicious, especially the Kyoto-style okonomiyaki. I was a bit hesitant at first, because I had read some conflicting reviews about them still catering to vegetarians, but I was happy to see some vegan options on the menu. It was a perfect start to a day filled with exploration and wonder.

First on our itinerary was Rengeō-in, also known as Sanjūsangen-dō Temple. The temple is famed for its 1,001 life-sized statues of the goddess Kannon. Walking into the hall, I was immediately struck by the sheer scale and artistry of the statues. Each one had a unique expression, and the sheer number of them created an awe-inspiring effect. James was particularly impressed by the intricate details of the hand-carved wood sculptures, covered in gold leaf. I found myself lost in contemplation, reflecting on the centuries of history and devotion that had gone into creating this sacred space. Unfortunately, we weren't allowed to take photos inside, which was a shame, but I understood the need to preserve the sanctity of the space. The memory of the statues is etched in my mind.
The juxtaposition of ancient artistry and modern ambition is what makes Kyoto so uniquely enchanting.
Next, we visited Toji Temple, another of Kyoto’s historical treasures. Founded in 796, it is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in the city and is renowned for its magnificent five-story pagoda, the tallest wooden structure in Japan. As we approached the temple, the pagoda loomed majestically against the clear blue sky. The grounds were beautifully maintained, with serene gardens and meticulously arranged buildings. We spent some time wandering around, admiring the architecture and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. It was interesting to learn about the temple's history and its significance as a center of Shingon Buddhism. I was particularly fascinated by the story of Kobo Daishi, the monk who founded Toji Temple and played a crucial role in spreading Buddhism throughout Japan. I remember reading about him during my studies in Vilnius, never imagining I’d one day stand in this very place.

For lunch, we chose Oryori Menami, a charming restaurant known for its traditional Kyoto cuisine. The restaurant had a cozy, inviting atmosphere, with a decor that blended modern aesthetics with traditional Japanese elements. We ordered a selection of local dishes, including obanzai (Kyoto-style home cooking) and fresh seafood. Each dish was thoughtfully prepared, using seasonal ingredients and highlighting the unique flavors of the region. It was a delightful culinary experience, and I especially enjoyed the delicate balance of flavors and textures in each dish. James, always the adventurous eater, tried everything with gusto, while I savored each bite, appreciating the artistry and skill that went into creating such a memorable meal. I made a mental note to try and recreate some of the dishes back home in Toronto – perhaps a new addition to our family dinners!

In the late afternoon, we decided to experience a different side of Kyoto by visiting Kyoto Tower. Standing at 131 meters, it’s the tallest structure in the city and offers panoramic views of the surrounding area. As we ascended to the observation deck, the cityscape unfolded before us, revealing a sprawling tapestry of temples, gardens, and modern buildings. It was a clear day, and we could see landmarks like Kiyomizu Temple and Fushimi Inari Shrine in the distance. The tower itself was conveniently located right across from Kyoto Station.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Premium Pound Gion for dinner. This restaurant is known for its high-quality Japanese beef teppanyaki. The chef was incredibly skilled and entertaining, and he prepared our meal right in front of us on a large iron griddle. The wagyu beef was cooked to perfection, melting in our mouths with each bite. The restaurant was small and intimate, seating only a handful of people, which added to the exclusive feel of the experience. The staff were friendly and attentive, making sure we had everything we needed. It was a truly unforgettable dining experience, and I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Kyoto.

To end the day, we decided to check out Concrete Bar, a small, hidden bar known for its unique atmosphere and friendly staff. Tucked away in a small corridor, it was a little hard to find, but definitely worth the effort. The bar had a cozy, intimate vibe, with a decor that was both stylish and eclectic. We ordered a round of cocktails and chatted with the bartender, who was incredibly friendly and welcoming. The bar had a great selection of music, and the atmosphere was relaxed and convivial. It was the perfect place to unwind after a long day of sightseeing. I even struck up a conversation with a local university student who was working part-time at a Korean restaurant – it’s moments like these that make traveling so special.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Philosopher's Path and the Silver Pavilion (Ginkaku-ji). I’m particularly excited about the Philosopher's Path, as I’ve heard it’s a beautiful walk along a canal, lined with cherry trees. It sounds like the perfect way to spend a peaceful morning in Kyoto.
I'm also hoping to pick up some unique souvenirs at the Kyoto Station ASTY Kyoto Kyoani Goods Store. Eglė would be thrilled if I brought something back for her.
