Charming Kyoto: A Cultural Adventure with Friends
Day 4: Gilded Temples and Serene Gardens: A Day of Kyoto's Spiritual Beauty
Discover Kyoto's golden temples and tranquil gardens with me and my friends. Experience the beauty and history of Japan's cultural heart.
Golden Reflections and Peaceful Stones
Today was all about immersing ourselves in the serene and spiritual heart of Kyoto. We explored dazzling temples and meditated in tranquil gardens, each a testament to Japan's rich cultural heritage. It was a day of reflection, beauty, and a deeper connection with the city's soul.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Cafe du Mon. I enjoyed a delicious pastry and a strong coffee, fueling up for a day of temple hopping. The cafe had a lovely, relaxed atmosphere, perfect for starting our Kyoto adventure. I made sure to pack my camera and a bottle of water, ready for a day of exploring. I also remembered to put on my comfortable walking shoes, a must for navigating the beautiful, yet extensive, temple grounds.
First on our itinerary was Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion. As we approached, the sight of the temple shimmering in the morning sun took my breath away. The top two floors, covered entirely in gold leaf, reflected brilliantly on the surrounding pond. It felt like stepping into a postcard. I learned that Kinkaku-ji was originally built as a retirement villa for Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu in 1397 and, according to his wishes, it was converted into a Zen temple after his death. The artistry and history were palpable, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and reverence.

Navigating through the crowds, I found a quiet spot to take some photos. The reflection of the golden temple on the water was mesmerizing, and I tried to capture the essence of its beauty. Even James, who usually isn't as interested in historical sites, was impressed by the sheer magnificence of the Golden Pavilion. He spent a good amount of time just gazing at it, lost in thought. Eglė, on the other hand, was fascinated by the story of the monk who burned down the original structure in 1950. She found it both tragic and intriguing.
In stillness, the mind finds clarity; in nature, the soul finds peace.
After Kinkaku-ji, we took a bus to Ryōan-ji, famous for its enigmatic rock garden. Stepping into the garden felt like entering a different world. Fifteen rocks are arranged in a rectangle of white gravel, surrounded by low earthen walls. The unique design ensures that at least one rock is always hidden from view, no matter where you stand. As I sat on the wooden platform, contemplating the arrangement, I felt a sense of calm wash over me. The garden is designed to encourage contemplation, and it certainly worked its magic on me. I learned that the garden's meaning is unclear, with some believing it represents islands in the sea or a tiger carrying cubs across a pond. Others see it as an abstract representation of infinity. I appreciated that there was no definitive explanation, allowing each visitor to find their own meaning.

Eglė was particularly intrigued by the mystery surrounding the garden's design and meaning. She spent a long time sketching the rock arrangement in her notebook, trying to decipher its secrets. James, ever the pragmatist, was more interested in the engineering behind the hidden rock. He speculated about the angles and perspectives, trying to figure out how the illusion was achieved.
Next, we visited Ninna-ji Temple, a World Heritage Site founded in 888 by Emperor Uda. This temple had a special connection to the imperial family, and it was fascinating to learn about its history. The vast complex included beautiful gardens, a five-story pagoda, and late-blooming dwarf cherry trees known as Omuro cherry trees. Although the cherry blossoms weren't in full bloom yet, I could imagine how stunning it must look during the peak season. We explored the various halls and gardens, each with its own unique charm. I particularly enjoyed the serene atmosphere of the temple, a stark contrast to the bustling crowds at Kinkaku-ji.

As we wandered through Ninna-ji, I felt a sense of peace and tranquility. The temple's connection to the imperial family added a layer of historical significance, and I appreciated the opportunity to learn more about Japan's rich heritage. We also took a moment to visit the Reihokan Museum, which houses many cultural properties, including sculptures and ancient documents. It was fascinating to see the artifacts and learn about the temple's history.
By late afternoon, we were ready for some retail therapy, so we headed to Kyoto Shinkyogoku Shopping Street. This covered arcade was a vibrant mix of souvenir shops, clothing stores, and restaurants. It was a great place to pick up some gifts for friends and family back home. I bought a beautiful silk scarf for my sister and a traditional wooden toy for my nephew. We also stopped at a small tea shop and enjoyed some matcha ice cream, a perfect treat after a long day of sightseeing.

The shopping street was bustling with activity, and I enjoyed soaking in the lively atmosphere. We browsed through the various shops, admiring the colorful displays and unique products. I even found a small, hand-painted ceramic cat, which I bought as a souvenir for myself. It was a fun and relaxing way to end our day of temple visits.
For dinner, we decided to try Pound Sanjo-Kiyamachi, a restaurant known for its delicious steaks. After a day of walking and exploring, we were all craving something hearty and satisfying. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting ambiance, and the staff were incredibly friendly and attentive. I ordered a perfectly cooked steak with a side of grilled vegetables, and it was absolutely divine. It was the perfect way to end our day of cultural immersion.

As I reflect on today’s adventures, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience Kyoto’s spiritual beauty. The golden reflections of Kinkaku-ji, the peaceful stones of Ryōan-ji, and the serene gardens of Ninna-ji have left an indelible mark on my soul. I'm also grateful for the chance to share these experiences with my friends, James and Eglė, who bring their own unique perspectives and insights to our travels. I am already looking forward to tomorrow, when we plan to visit Heian Shrine, walk the Philosopher's Path, and explore Nanzen-ji. And perhaps, if we have time, we'll stop by Bar Fishbowl for a nightcap. Until then, ojas bună (good night) from Kyoto!
