Charming Kyoto: A Cultural Adventure with Friends
Day 3: Kyoto's Imperial Majesty: A Day of Castles, Palaces, and Gardens
Discover Kyoto's regal past with visits to Nijō Castle, Kyoto Imperial Palace, and the serene Kyoto Gyoen National Garden.
Echoes of Emperors and Shoguns
Today, Kyoto unveiled more of its historical soul. It felt like stepping back in time, wandering through the former residences of shoguns and emperors, each stone whispering tales of power, tradition, and artistry. It's days like these that remind me why I love to travel – to connect with the past and understand the layers of history that shape our present.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Masayoshi Japanese Dining. I savored every bite, knowing we had a full day of exploration ahead. It's always a good idea to fuel up before diving into history!

Nijō Castle: A Shogun's Stronghold
Our first stop was Nijō Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the former Kyoto residence of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo period. The castle is an imposing structure, surrounded by stone walls and moats, a testament to the power and authority of the shogunate. Walking through the castle grounds, I couldn't help but imagine the samurai who once patrolled these walls. The architecture is stunning, showcasing the opulent style of the Edo period. The intricate details of the Karamon gate and the sheer scale of the Ninomaru Palace were truly impressive. James would have loved this place as he is always fascinated by Japanese military history.

The Ninomaru Palace, with its multiple buildings connected by corridors featuring the famous 'nightingale floors,' was a highlight. These floors squeak underfoot, a clever security measure designed to alert the shogun to any intruders. Inside, the palace rooms are adorned with tatami mats, decorated ceilings, and beautifully painted sliding doors (fusuma). It felt like stepping into a living painting, each room telling a story of power and artistry.
“History is not a burden on the memory but an illumination of the soul.”
Kyoto Imperial Palace: A Glimpse into Royal Life
Next, we ventured to the Kyoto Imperial Palace, known as Gosho, the former residence of Japan's imperial family. This serene compound, located in the heart of Kyoto Gyoen National Garden, offered a fascinating contrast to the shogun's imposing castle. It was interesting to learn that the palace we see today was rebuilt in 1855 after a fire, incorporating architectural elements from different periods of the city's history. The palace served as the Imperial residence for over 500 years, until the capital moved to Tokyo in 1868. Walking through the grounds, I felt a sense of reverence, imagining the emperors, empresses, and courtiers who once walked these paths.

The main buildings, including the Shishinden (Hall for State Ceremonies) and the Seiryoden (Emperor's residence), exuded a sense of understated elegance. Although we could only view the buildings from the outside, I could still appreciate the intricate details and the harmonious blend of architecture and nature. The palace gardens were equally enchanting, with meticulously manicured landscapes and serene ponds.
Kyoto Gyoen National Garden: A Tranquil Escape
After the grandeur of the palace, we strolled through Kyoto Gyoen National Garden, a sprawling green space that surrounds the Imperial Palace. This garden, once the domain of court nobles, is now a public park, offering a tranquil escape from the bustling city. As it is cherry blossom season, the gardens were especially beautiful, with many trees in full bloom. The cherry blossom interval is quite long in these gardens, lasting from mid-March to mid-May.

We wandered through the gardens, admiring the diverse flora and fauna. I was particularly enchanted by the itozakura weeping cherry trees, their slender branches cascading with rose-pink blossoms. The Konoe pond reflected the blossoms, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. It was the perfect place to relax and soak in the beauty of spring. I even saw a few locals having picnics under the trees, a quintessential Japanese tradition.
A Culinary Journey: Lunch and Dinner
For lunch, we had reservations at Kikunoi Roan, a renowned restaurant specializing in Kyoto-style Kaiseki cuisine. This was a culinary experience I won't soon forget. Each dish was a work of art, meticulously prepared with seasonal ingredients and presented with exquisite attention to detail. The flavors were delicate and refined, a true reflection of Kyoto's culinary heritage. I especially enjoyed the sashimi, which was incredibly fresh and flavorful. The service was impeccable, and the ambiance was serene and elegant.

The food was delicious, with a focus on seasonal ingredients and innovative techniques. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with history and culture.

Nightcap in Gion
To cap off the evening, we ventured into Gion, Kyoto's geisha district, and found The Common One Bar Kyoto. This hidden gem, with its traditional Machiya-style design, offered a cozy and intimate atmosphere. The bartender was a true artist, crafting exquisite cocktails with precision and flair. I savored a unique cocktail, infused with local flavors and ingredients. It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures.

As I sipped my drink, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience Kyoto's rich history and culture. It was a day filled with wonder, beauty, and unforgettable moments. Tomorrow, we plan to visit Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion), Ryōan-ji (famous for its rock garden), and Ninna-ji Temple. I'm excited to see what other treasures Kyoto has in store for us! I'm also planning to do some shopping at Kyoto Shinkyogoku Shopping Street.
I am so happy I decided to come to Kyoto with my friends. It is a trip that I will cherish forever.
