Charming Kyoto: A Cultural Adventure with Friends
Day 2: A Day of Serenity and Simian Shenanigans in Arashiyama
Discover Kyoto's enchanting Arashiyama: bamboo forests, Zen gardens, and playful monkeys create a day of unforgettable memories.
Kyoto's Bamboo, Temples, and Monkeys: Oh My!
Today was a day of pure magic in Arashiyama, a district just outside of Kyoto that feels like stepping into another world. From towering bamboo groves to serene temples and mischievous monkeys, it was an experience that I'll cherish forever. The day started with a hearty breakfast and ended with a culinary experience. I'm so excited to share all the details!
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Goichi Pizza. I know, I know, pizza in Japan? But after several days of traditional Japanese breakfasts, James and I were craving something a little different. Plus, I had read online that Goichi Pizza was a local favourite, and I always trust the locals. The pizza was delicious, with a perfectly crisp crust and fresh toppings. It was the perfect fuel for a day of exploring.
After breakfast, we ventured into the famed Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. I had seen countless photos of this place, but nothing could have prepared me for the real thing. As we stepped into the grove, we were immediately enveloped by towering stalks of bamboo, reaching high into the sky. The sunlight filtered through the dense canopy, casting dappled shadows on the path below. It was so peaceful and serene, a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and wonder at the sheer scale and beauty of nature.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.
Next on our list was Tenryu-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site located right next to the bamboo grove. Founded in 1339, this Zen temple is one of the most important in Kyoto. We wandered through the temple's stunning gardens, admiring the meticulously manicured landscapes and the serene pond. The temple buildings themselves were equally impressive, with intricate details and a sense of history that permeated every corner. It was easy to imagine monks meditating in these very halls centuries ago.

After soaking in the tranquility of Tenryu-ji, we decided to embark on a slightly more adventurous activity: a hike up to Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama. This park is home to a troop of wild Japanese macaque monkeys, and visitors are allowed to interact with them. The hike up to the park was a bit strenuous, but the views from the top were well worth the effort. From there, we could see the entire city of Kyoto spread out before us, a breathtaking panorama of temples, gardens, and mountains.

Once we reached the monkey park, we were immediately greeted by the sight of dozens of monkeys roaming freely. They were surprisingly unafraid of humans, and some even came right up to us, looking for a handout. We bought some monkey food (peanuts and apple slices) and fed them through a wire mesh fence. It was such a unique and fun experience, and it was fascinating to watch the monkeys interact with each other. Eglė would have loved this!
After spending a couple of hours with the monkeys, we made our way back down the mountain and headed to Arash's Kitchen for lunch. I had heard great things about this little restaurant, and it did not disappoint. We ordered a selection of traditional Japanese dishes, including tempura, sushi, and udon noodles. Everything was fresh and delicious, and it was the perfect way to refuel after our hike.

Before heading back to the Ryokan, we took a detour to Sanjo Meiten-gai Shopping Arcade. This covered shopping street is a hidden gem, filled with local shops selling everything from traditional crafts to delicious street food. It was fun to wander through the arcade, soaking in the local atmosphere and picking up a few souvenirs. I even found a beautiful silk scarf for my mother, who I know will appreciate its intricate design.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Gion Nanba for dinner. This restaurant is known for its exquisite Kaiseki cuisine, a traditional Japanese multi-course meal. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavour. It was a truly special dining experience, and the perfect way to end our day in Arashiyama.

Tomorrow, we're planning to visit Nijō Castle, Kyoto Imperial Palace and Kyoto Gyoen National Garden. I'm excited to see more of Kyoto's historical treasures. And perhaps we'll find a cozy bar like The Common One Bar Kyoto for a nightcap.
What a day! From serene bamboo forests to playful monkeys and exquisite cuisine, Arashiyama truly has it all. It's a place that I'll never forget, and I can't wait to return someday. It's experiences like these that make travelling with friends so special, creating memories that will last a lifetime. I am really happy James could experience this with me, I know how important it is for him to share these experiences with me.
I must remember to buy a universal power adapter and a travel umbrella when I get back to Toronto. They would have been really useful!
