Today was a deep dive into the soul of Kanazawa, a day where history and artistry intertwined to create unforgettable memories. It's amazing how a single day can encapsulate so much of a city's essence, leaving you with a sense of connection and understanding that transcends the typical tourist experience. From secret passages to artisan studios, every moment felt like uncovering a new layer of Kanazawa's rich tapestry.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Kabuna, a local izakaya known for its fresh seafood and cozy atmosphere. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. The friendly staff and the delicious, authentic Japanese breakfast set a positive tone for the adventures ahead. I savored every bite, knowing that I was experiencing a true taste of Kanazawa. It reminded me a bit of the small, family-run restaurants back in Kėdainiai, where the food was always made with love and the atmosphere was warm and inviting.

First on the itinerary was Myouryuji, famously known as the Ninja Temple. Despite its nickname, the temple has no actual connection to ninjas. However, its intricate design, filled with hidden passages, secret rooms, and deceptive defenses, earned it the moniker. As someone who appreciates history and clever architecture, I was excited to explore this unique site. The guided tour, though in Japanese, came with an English information booklet, which was incredibly helpful. I learned that the temple was built in 1643 as a secret armed outpost to circumvent the shogunate's ban on defensive military structures. The Maeda family, who ruled the Kaga domain, constructed it to protect Kanazawa Castle from attack.

As I walked through the maze-like interior, I was amazed by the ingenuity of the design. The temple appears to be only two stories high from the outside, but it actually has four floors, 23 rooms, and 29 staircases. There's even a concealed watchtower. Our guide pointed out trap doors, hidden corridors, and secret rooms, each with its own purpose in defending the temple. Legend has it that a tunnel connects the temple's well to the castle, allowing for secret communication during an attack. I found myself imagining what it must have been like to live and work in such a place, constantly aware of the potential for danger. It was a thrilling and educational experience, offering a glimpse into the strategic thinking of the Edo period.

After the Ninja Temple, I headed to Kanazawa Utatsuyama Kogei Kobo, a workshop dedicated to preserving and promoting Kanazawa's traditional crafts. This facility offers visitors the chance to observe artisans at work and participate in hands-on workshops. Established in 1989 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Kanazawa City, the Kobo serves as a training center for various crafts, including ceramics, lacquerware, metalwork, and dyeing.

For lunch, I stopped at Cottage, a charming café known for its exotic atmosphere and traditional dishes from England and Ireland. It was a delightful change of pace from the Japanese cuisine I had been enjoying. The homemade pizzas and pastas were delicious, and the cozy setting made me feel right at home. I opted for the special pizza of the day, which was a creative combination of local vegetables and cheeses. Chatting with the friendly owner and his wife added to the warm and welcoming atmosphere. It felt like stepping into a countryside cottage in Europe, a welcome contrast to the bustling city outside. It was a reminder of James and his Irish roots, and I made a mental note to try and recreate some of the dishes for him when I returned to Toronto.

In the afternoon, I took a leisurely stroll along Kuragarizaka, a historic slope in the Kazuemachi district. Known as the slope of darkness, Kuragarizaka was once used by wealthy patrons who frequented the teahouses in the area. Today, it's a picturesque street with well-preserved traditional buildings and a serene atmosphere. As I walked along the cobblestone path, I imagined the men of the past discreetly making their way to the teahouses, seeking entertainment and companionship. The lush greenery and quaint architecture created a peaceful ambiance, and I enjoyed soaking in the history and charm of the area.

At the top of Kuragarizaka, I discovered Kuboichi Ototsurugigu Shrine, a hidden gem associated with the writer Kyoka Izumi. The shrine has a long history as the birthplace of the market in Kanazawa and is believed to protect the city's prosperity. I took a moment to appreciate the peaceful surroundings and the sense of history that permeated the air. It was a reminder of the importance of preserving cultural heritage and honoring the traditions of the past. The climb up the slope was worth it, offering a unique perspective on Kanazawa's rich history and cultural significance.

As evening approached, I decided to treat myself to dinner at HUNI, a modern izakaya known for its innovative cuisine and stylish ambiance. The restaurant combines traditional Japanese flavors with contemporary culinary techniques, creating a unique and memorable dining experience. The warm lighting and chic decor created an inviting atmosphere, perfect for a solo dinner. I savored an array of dishes, each thoughtfully crafted to showcase the artistry of Japanese cuisine. The fresh sashimi was exquisite, and the creative fusion dishes were a delight to the palate. The knowledgeable staff recommended a fine sake to pair with my meal, enhancing the overall experience.

To cap off the evening, I ventured to Bar Spoon, a long-established bar in the Katamachi district. Known for its classic cocktails and extensive whisky selection, Bar Spoon is a favorite among locals and tourists alike. The bartender was a true professional, crafting each drink with precision and care. I enjoyed a perfectly made Old Fashioned, savoring the smooth taste and the sophisticated atmosphere. The bar was a great place to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. It felt like stepping back in time, a classic bar that exuded elegance and charm. It was the perfect ending to a day filled with exploration and discovery. The bar was celebrating its 35th anniversary, and the vanilla cocktail was delicious.

Tomorrow marks the final day of my solo adventure in Kanazawa. I plan to visit the Kanazawa Literary Hall, Tentokuin Temple, and Shoko-ji Temple. I am also hoping to do some last-minute souvenir shopping at Hands Kanazawa Store before heading to the airport. I will enjoy breakfast at Japanese Restaurant Benkay, lunch at Gyokusen-tei and a final dinner at Teppanyaki Icho.

As I prepare to leave this enchanting city, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences I have had and the memories I have made. Kanazawa has captured my heart with its rich history, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality. I know that I will carry a piece of this city with me wherever I go, and I hope to return someday to explore even more of its hidden treasures. It's been a journey of self-discovery and cultural immersion, a reminder of the beauty and diversity that our world has to offer.

Reflecting on today, it strikes me how much Kanazawa mirrors aspects of my own life. The careful preservation of tradition, the blend of old and new, the sense of community – these are all values I hold dear. Perhaps that's why I feel such a strong connection to this place.
