Cultural Immersion in Kanazawa: A Solo Journey
Day 11: A Fond Farewell to Kanazawa: Literary Echoes and Serene Reflections
Reflecting on my Kanazawa journey: exploring literary halls, tranquil temples, and the charm of local craftsmanship before heading home.
A Day of Literary and Spiritual Exploration
As my journey in Kanazawa draws to a close, I wanted to soak in a few more cultural gems before heading back to Toronto. Today was all about exploring the city's literary side and finding tranquility in its serene temples. It was a day of reflection, appreciation, and a final embrace of Kanazawa's unique charm.
My day began with a hearty Japanese breakfast at Japanese Restaurant Benkay, located in the hotel. I savored the traditional flavors, knowing I would miss these authentic meals. The assortment of small dishes, each bursting with unique tastes, was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. It reminded me of the simple yet profound culinary experiences I cherish back home, like foraging for mushrooms in local parks and experimenting with new recipes from around the world. I made a mental note to try and recreate some of these dishes for James and Eglė when I returned.

First on the agenda was the Kanazawa Literary Hall. I've always been drawn to literature, and as someone who enjoys learning about different cultures and history, this was a must-see. The hall celebrates the city's rich literary heritage, showcasing the works of local writers and poets. The building itself exuded a quiet charm, with cozy reading rooms and exhibits that brought Kanazawa's literary past to life. I spent a pleasant hour browsing the collection and learning about authors I hadn't encountered before. It was inspiring to see how the city fostered such a vibrant literary community.

The beauty of Kanazawa lies not just in its sights, but in the stories it whispers through its streets and temples.
Next, I ventured to Tentokuin Temple, a Soto Zen Buddhist temple built in honor of Tamahime, the daughter of the shogun Tokugawa Hidetada. The temple was established in 1623 by Maeda Toshitsune for his wife Tamahime, who passed away at the young age of 24. As I stepped through the large Sanmon gate, I felt a sense of peace wash over me. The temple's history is fascinating. Most of the buildings were destroyed by a fire in 1768, but the gate survived. The temple was rebuilt in just 70 days. Tamahime loved dolls, and the temple displays some that belonged to her. There are even daily performances of her life story using traditional mechanized puppets called karakuri. I took my time wandering through the serene gardens, admiring the traditional architecture, and reflecting on the temple's rich history. The story of Tamahime, a princess who brought peace between powerful families, resonated with me deeply. It reminded me of the importance of family and the sacrifices made for love and duty.

Afterward, it was time for lunch at Gyokusen-tei. It was a delightful culinary experience. I savored the flavors of the region, reflecting on all the wonderful meals I’ve had during my stay.

In the afternoon, I visited Shoko-ji, a temple with a history spanning nearly 500 years. Designated as a National Treasure in 2022, Shoko-ji is a prestigious temple of the Jōdo Shinshū Honganji sect of Buddhism. The temple's grand scale and formal layout are modeled after the head temples of the sect, making it one of the most important examples of a large Jōdo Shinshū temple in Japan. As I explored the temple grounds, I was struck by the intricate craftsmanship and refined aesthetics that have stood the test of time. The serene atmosphere provided a perfect space for contemplation, and I found myself reflecting on my journey and the experiences I've had.

Before heading back to the hotel, I stopped by Hands Kanazawa Store. I wanted to pick up a few souvenirs for James and Eglė. The store was a treasure trove of unique items, from Japanese cosmetics to quirky home goods and delightful stationery. I carefully selected a few gifts that I knew they would love, each one a reminder of my time in Kanazawa. It's always a joy to bring back a piece of my travels to share with my family. I know Eglė will love the cute erasers and pens, and James will appreciate the small tools they sell at the store.
