Solo Art Exploration on Naoshima Island
Day 10: Farewell Naoshima: A Final Day of Art and Reflection
Concluding my solo art journey on Naoshima with Teshima's serene landscapes, unique installations, and delightful local flavors. A perfect ending!
Island Echoes: A Fond Farewell to Naoshima
As my ten-day solo art exploration on Naoshima Island draws to a close, I find myself filled with a mix of contentment and a touch of melancholy. This journey has been more than just a vacation; it's been a deep dive into the intersection of art, nature, and personal reflection. Today, my final day, was all about soaking in the last drops of inspiration and savoring the unique experiences this island has offered.
My morning began with a hearty breakfast at TakoTako. I had heard so much about their takoyaki, a local specialty, and I was eager to try it. The small, cozy eatery was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all drawn in by the aroma of freshly cooked octopus balls. I ordered a plate and sat outside, enjoying the warm morning sun and the lively chatter around me. The takoyaki was indeed delicious – perfectly crispy on the outside, soft and flavorful on the inside, with a generous helping of savory sauce and bonito flakes. It was the perfect way to start my day, fueling me up for the adventures ahead.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I hopped on the ferry to Teshima Island. Just a short ride from Naoshima, Teshima is another gem in the Seto Inland Sea, known for its own unique blend of art and natural beauty. The island is smaller and more rural than Naoshima, with terraced rice fields, lush forests, and a tranquil atmosphere that invites contemplation.
My first stop was the Teshima 8 Million Lab. This intriguing art installation, conceived by artist Sputniko!, explores the Shinto concept of Yaoyorozu, which refers to the countless gods believed to reside in all things. The lab is housed in a renovated traditional dwelling, with torii gates leading to the entrance and ema (votive tablets) hanging near Mt. Danyama. Inside, the exhibits blend art and technology, prompting visitors to consider alternative perspectives on the future of nature and beliefs. Although the Teshima 8 Million Lab is currently closed, I was still able to appreciate the exterior and the surrounding landscape, imagining the innovative works housed within. The blend of traditional architecture and modern artistic concepts was truly captivating, sparking a sense of wonder and curiosity about the intersection of art, science, and spirituality.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
Next on my list was Danyama, the mountain at the center of Teshima Island. I decided to rent an electric bicycle to make the climb easier, a decision I was grateful for as the road wound uphill. As I ascended, the views became increasingly breathtaking, with panoramic vistas of the Seto Inland Sea and the surrounding islands. The mountain itself is covered in lush forests, with an evergreen Japanese chinquapin forest and a 250-year-old tree adding to the sense of ancient tranquility. Reaching the top, I was rewarded with a 360-degree view that stretched as far as the eye could see. The sparkling blue waters, dotted with islands of varying shapes and sizes, created a mesmerizing tapestry of nature's beauty. I spent a few moments simply soaking it all in, feeling a sense of peace and connection to the world around me. It was a perfect reminder of the importance of taking time to appreciate the simple wonders of nature, a theme that has resonated throughout my journey on Naoshima and Teshima.

After descending from Danyama, I made my way to a local spot I had heard about, to simply enjoy a cup of tea. Finding a traditional tea house, I settled in for a quiet moment of reflection. The tea was served with delicate Japanese sweets, and I savored each bite and sip, letting the flavors and aromas transport me to a state of calm. As I sat there, I thought about all the incredible art I had seen, the delicious food I had tasted, and the wonderful people I had met during my time on Naoshima Island. It was a journey that had enriched my soul and broadened my perspective, leaving me with memories that I would cherish for a lifetime.

For lunch, I headed to Ishii Shouten, a small udon shop in Honmura town on Naoshima. This cozy eatery is known for its authentic udon dishes, and I was eager to try their famous Niku Udon. The shop was bustling with activity, but I managed to find a seat at the counter. The udon was served in a steaming bowl of savory broth, topped with tender slices of beef and fresh green onions. The noodles were perfectly chewy, and the broth was rich and flavorful. It was a simple yet satisfying meal that warmed me from the inside out, providing the perfect fuel for the rest of my day.

As the sun began to set, I returned to Naoshima, feeling a sense of contentment and gratitude for the experiences I had had. I decided to treat myself to a final dinner at maimai, a restaurant known for its delicious Mediterranean-style cuisine. I was lucky to get a table as the place was bustling with locals and tourists alike. I ordered a seafood pasta dish, and it was genuinely delicious. After dinner, I strolled along the harbor front, watching the lights twinkle across the water.

Before heading back to my lodge, I decided to visit One Rest, a local bar known for its laid-back atmosphere. I ordered a glass of sake and sat at the counter, chatting with the friendly bartender and a few other patrons. It was a perfect way to end my trip, sharing stories and laughter with newfound friends in a cozy, welcoming setting. As I sipped my sake, I reflected on all the incredible experiences I had had during my time on Naoshima Island. From the awe-inspiring art installations to the stunning natural landscapes, this journey had been a feast for the senses and a balm for the soul. I felt grateful for the opportunity to explore this unique corner of the world and for the memories I had made along the way.

I am so grateful I took this solo trip. As a wife and mother, it is not often that I get to do things on my own. My husband James and daughter Eglė are always in my heart, but this trip was for me.
As I prepare to leave Naoshima tomorrow, I know that a part of me will always remain here, amidst the art, the nature, and the warm smiles of the island's inhabitants. This solo adventure has been a journey of self-discovery and inspiration, and I am excited to carry these experiences with me as I return to my life in Toronto. Until next time, Naoshima, thank you for the memories.
As I pack my bags, my heart is full of gratitude for the experiences I've had here. Naoshima, you've been a dream.
Tomorrow, I start my journey back home, filled with memories and inspiration from this artistic haven. It's time to return to Toronto, to James and Eglė, and share my stories. But Naoshima, you'll always have a piece of my heart.
This trip reminded me of a quote my mother used to say in Lithuania:
Kelias nebūtinai turi būti tiesus, kad pasiektum tikslą.
Which translates to:
The road doesn't necessarily have to be straight to reach the goal.
