Finding Peace in Art: Naoshima's Hidden Gems
Today was a day of quiet contemplation and artistic discovery. As my solo journey on Naoshima Island nears its end, I wanted to soak in the serene atmosphere and reflect on the incredible art I've encountered. Leaving My Lodge Naoshima, I set out to explore some of the island's less-visited yet equally captivating spots.

My morning began with a hearty breakfast at Luke's Table. It's become a bit of a ritual for me, enjoying their simple yet satisfying fare while watching the early morning light bathe the island. Fuelled up, I made my way to the Art Island Center. It wasn't as crowded as some of the other museums, which allowed me to wander at my own pace and truly appreciate the exhibits. The center provided a comprehensive overview of the island's art projects and history, giving me a deeper understanding of the artistic vision that permeates Naoshima. I found myself particularly drawn to the architectural models and photographs showcasing the evolution of the island's landscape. It's fascinating how art and nature intertwine so seamlessly here. I remember back in Kėdainiai, Lithuania, we had a small art gallery that always felt separate from the town itself. Here, art is the town, and the town is art.

Next on my list was Naoshima Hall. This community center, designed by architect Hiroshi Sambuichi, is a stunning example of sustainable architecture. The building is partially buried underground to minimize its environmental impact and maximize natural light. Inside, I found a tranquil space where locals gather for various activities. I was lucky enough to witness a traditional tea ceremony, which was a beautiful and serene experience. The simplicity and grace of the ceremony were deeply moving, reminding me of the importance of mindfulness and connection in our busy lives. Witnessing the tea ceremony brought back memories of my grandmother in Lithuania, who always emphasized the importance of slowing down and savoring each moment.

For lunch, I ventured to EAT LOCAL 直島食堂, a charming restaurant that celebrates the island's local produce. The menu featured a variety of dishes made with fresh, seasonal ingredients. I opted for the set meal, which included grilled fish, rice, miso soup, and pickled vegetables. Every bite was bursting with flavor, and I savored the opportunity to support local farmers and businesses. I’ve always believed that food is a window into a culture, and this meal certainly gave me a taste of Naoshima's culinary heritage.

After lunch, I decided to take a leisurely stroll through Yokobou Park. This park, located on a hillside overlooking the Seto Inland Sea, offered breathtaking panoramic views. The lush greenery and colorful flowers created a peaceful oasis, and I spent some time simply sitting on a bench, soaking in the beauty of my surroundings. It was a perfect spot for reflection, and I couldn't help but think about my family back in Toronto. I miss James and Eglė dearly, but I know that this solo adventure is something I need to do for myself. Perhaps one day, I can bring them here to experience the magic of Naoshima together. As I wandered through the park, I stumbled upon a small, hidden shrine. It was adorned with colorful ribbons and prayer tablets, and I felt a sense of reverence and tranquility wash over me. I closed my eyes and offered a silent prayer for my family's health and happiness.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
Before heading back to My Lodge Naoshima, I stopped by Naoshima Shop Umihotaru for some souvenirs. I wanted to find something special to bring back to James and Eglė, something that would capture the essence of Naoshima. I ended up buying a beautiful hand-painted ceramic bowl for James, who loves to cook, and a delicate glass sculpture for Eglė, who has a keen eye for art. I also picked up a few small trinkets for myself, to remind me of this incredible journey.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to Honmura Lounge & Archive for dinner. This cozy restaurant is located in a traditional Japanese house, and the atmosphere is warm and inviting. The menu featured a mix of Japanese and Western dishes, and I decided to try the local specialty, sea bream sashimi. It was incredibly fresh and flavorful, and I enjoyed chatting with the friendly staff about the island's history and culture. The restaurant also serves as a community archive, displaying old photographs and documents that tell the story of Naoshima's past. It was fascinating to learn about the island's transformation from a sleepy fishing village to a world-renowned art destination. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this unique place.

Reflecting on the day, I realize how much Naoshima has touched my soul. The art, the nature, and the people have all left an indelible mark on my heart. It's a place where creativity flourishes, where tradition meets innovation, and where peace and tranquility abound. As I prepare for my final day on the island tomorrow, I'm filled with a sense of anticipation and excitement. My itinerary includes Teshima 8 Million Lab, Drink a Cup of Tea, and Danyama, and I'm eager to discover what these hidden gems have in store for me. I’m also planning to have breakfast at TakoTako, lunch at Ishii Shouten, and a farewell dinner at maimai. And perhaps, just perhaps, I'll find a cozy little bar called One Rest to celebrate the end of my solo adventure.
Goodnight from Naoshima!
Tomorrow, I will be venturing to Teshima Island, which I've heard is another jewel in the Seto Inland Sea. I'm excited to explore the Teshima Art Museum and the Teshima Yokoo House. I can't wait to see what artistic wonders await me there.
