Whispers of Gold and Stone

Today in Kyoto was a journey through time and tranquility, a day where the echoes of emperors and the whispers of Zen gardens guided my steps. From the dazzling Kinkaku-ji to the enigmatic Ryoan-ji and the stately Ninna-ji, each site offered a unique perspective on Kyoto's rich tapestry of history and spirituality. It's days like these that remind me why I traded the predictable comfort of my Berlin apartment for the open road.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Fujiya. It was a great way to start the day, enjoying traditional Japanese cuisine. After a delicious meal, I headed to Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion. The temple shimmered in the morning light, its golden facade reflecting perfectly on the serene pond. It was a sight that truly took my breath away. Kinkaku-ji, originally built as a retirement villa for Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu in 1397, later became a Zen Buddhist temple after his death.

The history of this place is fascinating. It has been burned down numerous times, including once by a fanatic monk in 1950. Rebuilt in 1955, it stands as a testament to the enduring beauty and resilience of Japanese culture. Each floor represents a different architectural style, blending the aristocratic Heian period with Zen Buddhist design. I spent a good hour wandering the grounds, taking in the meticulously manicured gardens and the overall sense of peace that permeated the air.

From Kinkaku-ji, I made my way to Ryoan-ji, home to Japan's most famous rock garden. As a software developer, I appreciate the clean lines and minimalist design, but I was curious to see what made this garden so special. The garden consists of fifteen rocks arranged in a rectangle of pebbles, surrounded by low earthen walls. What’s intriguing is that from any vantage point, at least one of the rocks is always hidden from view.

The meaning of the garden is a mystery, with theories ranging from islands in a sea to a tiger carrying cubs across a pond. I sat on the veranda of the Hojo, the head priest's former residence, and contemplated the arrangement. The bareness of the garden invites introspection, a chance to clear the mind and find one's own interpretation. It’s a stark contrast to the opulence of Kinkaku-ji, yet equally captivating.

The beauty of simplicity lies not in what is seen, but in what it makes you think.

After Ryoan-ji, I visited Ninna-ji Temple, founded in 888 by Emperor Uda. This temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, once served as a residence for members of the Imperial family who entered the priesthood. The scale of the place is impressive, and it certainly has a royal feel to it. Wandering through the grounds, I admired the five-story pagoda and the Kondo, the main hall, which is a National Treasure. It was peaceful walking through the expansive grounds, imagining the emperors who once walked here. Ninna-ji offered a different kind of serenity, one steeped in imperial history and architectural grandeur.

Lunch was an exquisite affair at Kikunoi Roan, a kaiseki restaurant that offered a modern take on traditional cuisine. Each dish was a work of art, a delicate balance of flavors and textures that showcased the best of Kyoto's seasonal ingredients. The presentation was impeccable, and the service was attentive without being intrusive. It was the kind of meal that lingers in your memory long after the last bite.

As evening approached, I found myself drawn to The Common One Bar Kyoto, a hidden gem tucked away in the Gion district. The bar is known for its expertly crafted cocktails and intimate atmosphere. It was the perfect spot to unwind after a day of temple hopping. I ordered a bespoke cocktail, trusting the bartender to create something special based on my preferences. The result was a delightful concoction that was both refreshing and complex, a fitting end to a day of exploration and reflection.

The Tōka Ebisu Festival is currently ongoing in Kyoto, a major event held at the Kyoto Ebisu Shrine from January 8th to 12th. This festival honors Ebisu, one of the Seven Lucky Gods and the deity of fishermen and commerce, with locals and tourists gathering to pray for prosperity and purchase lucky charms. While I didn’t make it there today, it sounds like a vibrant celebration worth checking out during my stay.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much Kyoto has to offer. It's a city that seamlessly blends history, culture, and spirituality, offering endless opportunities for exploration and discovery. Tomorrow, I plan to visit Fushimi Inari Taisha, Tofuku-ji Temple, and Sanjusangendo Temple. Each of these sites promises a unique glimpse into Kyoto's past and present, and I'm eager to continue my journey through this fascinating city. I might even swing by the Kyoto Station ASTY Kyoto Kyoani Goods Store to pick up a souvenir or two.

Being able to immerse myself in new cultures and capture these experiences through my lens is a privilege I don't take for granted. The temples of Kyoto are a reminder to slow down, appreciate the present, and find beauty in simplicity. They offer a sanctuary from the chaos of modern life, a place to contemplate the past and find inspiration for the future. Each visit is a step further on my journey of self-discovery, reinforcing my love for history, culture, and the open road. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. I'm also happy that I remembered to pack my phrasebook, it has been a great help communicating with the locals.

I am glad I chose Hotel ALZA KYOTO as my base for this trip. Its location is perfect for exploring the city, and the contemporary comforts provide a welcome respite after a long day of sightseeing. It feels good to know that after a day of exploration, I have a comfortable and convenient place to return to.

I was also thinking today about my life back in Berlin. While I enjoy the freedom of solo travel, sometimes I miss the sense of community and the familiar faces. Perhaps on my next trip, I'll convince some friends to join me. Until then, I'll continue to embrace the solitude and the opportunity for introspection that solo travel provides. It's a chance to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with myself, a luxury that's all too rare in today's fast-paced society.

Tonight, as I prepare for another day of exploration, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences I've had and the adventures that lie ahead. Kyoto has a way of captivating the soul, of reminding you of the beauty and wonder that exists in the world. It's a place where the past and present coexist in harmony, where ancient traditions are celebrated alongside modern innovations. It's a city that challenges you to open your mind, to embrace new perspectives, and to find your own path in life. And for that, I'm eternally grateful.
