Day 1: Lost in Kyoto's Timeless Beauty

Berlin in January is… well, it's Berlin in January. Gray, cold, and desperately in need of some sunlight. That's precisely why I booked this trip to Kyoto. I needed a dose of vibrant culture and a break from coding in my dimly lit apartment. Arriving in Kyoto today felt like stepping into a different world, a world steeped in history and brimming with a unique, serene energy. I was especially excited to start my solo adventure, camera in hand, ready to capture the essence of this ancient city.

My day began with a hearty vegan breakfast at AIN SOPH. Journey KYOTO. The reviews online were raving about their pancakes, and as a self-proclaimed pancake enthusiast, I had to try them. Nestled away from the bustling streets, the cafe was a cozy haven. It was a delightful surprise to find a fully vegan restaurant in Kyoto. I opted for the matcha pancakes, and they were indeed heavenly. Fluffy, light, and generously topped with soy ice cream and whipped cream – a perfect way to kick off my culinary explorations here. Fuelled up and ready to go, I made my way to my first stop: Yasaka Shrine.

Yasaka Shrine, with its vibrant vermillion gates, was bustling with activity. January is a significant time, with many locals and tourists alike visiting for Hatsumode, the first shrine visit of the New Year. The air was filled with the scent of incense and the murmur of prayers. I watched as people purchased *omamori* (protective charms) and *omikuji* (fortune slips), hoping for good luck in the coming year. The shrine was founded in 876 and used to be called “Gion-sha”, known as a god warding off evil spirits. I even witnessed a part of the Okeramairi ceremony, where people light sacred ropes from a burning prayer stick and try to carry the ember home without it extinguishing. It was fascinating to see this blend of ancient traditions thriving in the modern world. It's events like these that really connect the Kyotoites to their everyday lives.

Kyoto is a city where the past and present intertwine, creating a unique tapestry of culture and tradition.

From Yasaka Shrine, I strolled towards Kenninji Temple, Kyoto's oldest Zen temple. The contrast between the lively shrine and the tranquil temple was striking. As I wandered through the temple grounds, the serene atmosphere washed over me. The bare winter trees added to the sense of peaceful contemplation. I explored the *Hojo*, the abbot's quarters, and admired the stunning ceiling painting of the Twin Dragons in the *Hatto* (Dharma Hall). It was amazing to see the temple's architecture so carefully preserved over the centuries. Founded in 1202, it has served as the headquarters of Rinzai Zen Buddhism in Kyoto. While the vibrant summer greenery is energizing, the sight of snow covering the Sanmon gate and surrounding trees adds a peaceful, picturesque charm.

After soaking in the Zen atmosphere of Kenninji, I ventured into Gion, Kyoto's famed geisha district. The narrow, lantern-lit streets were enchanting, and I couldn't help but feel like I'd stepped back in time. I wandered along Hanamikoji Street, hoping to catch a glimpse of a geiko (Kyoto geisha) or maiko (apprentice geisha) gracefully making their way to an appointment. The wooden *machiya* houses, traditional teahouses, and exclusive clubs exuded an air of mystery and elegance. It's easy to see why this is Kyoto's most famous geisha district. I learned that the Gion district originated with women working at *chaya* rest houses, serving refreshments to people visiting the Gion-sha shrine.

For lunch, I decided to try Katsukura - Kyoto Porta, located near Kyoto Station. I was in the mood for some authentic *tonkatsu*, and this place came highly recommended. I ordered the pork tenderloin cutlet set meal, and it was absolutely delicious. The pork was tender and juicy, coated in a perfectly crispy breading. I also tried their original *tonkatsu* sauce, which had a unique mild yet full taste, achieved by adding red wine, apples, and jujubes to the mixture. It was a satisfying and comforting meal, perfect for a chilly winter day. I loved how they paid close attention to the tableware as well.

As evening approached, I headed back to Gion for dinner at Gion Nanba, a Michelin-starred *kaiseki* restaurant. Tucked away in a narrow alley, the restaurant offered a serene and intimate dining experience. *Kaiseki* is a traditional multi-course Japanese dinner, and each dish was a work of art, showcasing the freshest seasonal ingredients. I enjoyed the simple yet fancy food, with a distinct Namba flavor. I savored every bite, appreciating the chef's attention to detail and the exquisite flavors. The service was impeccable, and the atmosphere was refined and elegant. It was a truly memorable culinary experience. It was questionable whether it was truly a Michelin one star, but I had a delightful experience.

To end the day, I decided to check out L'Escamoteur, a bar known for its unique cocktails and entertaining performances. The bar had a hidden, speakeasy vibe, and the atmosphere was lively and fun. The bartender was a charismatic mixologist who crafted inventive cocktails while performing magic tricks. It was like stepping into another country, and I found myself instantly addicted to the atmosphere. I ordered a signature cocktail and was amazed by the presentation and the complex flavors. It was a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring.

I’m incredibly grateful for the flexibility my freelance work provides. Back in Berlin, juggling lines of code, it's easy to lose sight of the beauty in the world. This trip is a reminder that there’s so much more to life than debugging and deadlines. It’s about experiencing new cultures, savoring unique flavors, and capturing the essence of a place through my lens. And maybe, just maybe, finding a little inspiration to bring back to my code.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore Kiyomizu-dera Temple and the charming streets of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka. Who knows what hidden gems I'll discover then?
