Kochi's Charms: A Day of Discovery

Today was a deep dive into the heart of Kochi, a city that effortlessly blends history with vibrant local life. Aisha would have loved the market, I know it. The day unfolded with a visit to a majestic castle, immersion in a bustling market, and a delightful exploration of local cuisine. It's days like these that remind me why I love to travel – the unexpected encounters, the rich cultural tapestry, and the simple joy of experiencing something new.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at Eki-mae Shokudo. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and perfectly steamed rice. It was the perfect fuel for a day of exploration, and I made a mental note to try and recreate the miso soup back home in Toronto. I always find that food is such an integral part of understanding a culture, and this humble eatery was a great starting point.

Kochi Castle: A Step Back in Time

After breakfast, I headed to Kochi Castle, a landmark that dominates the city's skyline. As I approached the castle grounds, I was immediately struck by the imposing stone walls and the elegant silhouette of the main keep. Built in the early 17th century by Yamanouchi Kazutoyo, the first lord of the Tosa Clan, Kochi Castle is one of the few original castles in Japan that has survived the fires and wars of the post-feudal age.

Walking through the Otemon Gate, I felt like I was stepping back in time. The castle grounds were meticulously maintained, with towering trees providing shade and a sense of tranquility. I explored the main keep, marveling at the wooden interior and the panoramic views of Kochi City from the top floor. The castle also houses a museum with local treasures and historical objects, offering a glimpse into the lives of the Yamauchi lords who once ruled the region.

One unique feature of Kochi Castle is that its main tower was used not only for military purposes but also as a residence. Unlike many other castles where lords resided in separate palace buildings, the Yamauchi lords lived within the castle keep, giving it a distinct character. The views from the top were stunning, offering a 360-degree panorama of Kochi City.

Kochi Sunday Market: A Local Treasure

From the serene heights of Kochi Castle, I ventured into the vibrant chaos of the Kochi Sunday Market. Stretching for over a kilometer along Otesuji Street, this market has been a weekly tradition for over 300 years. As I strolled through the rows of stalls, I was immediately immersed in a sensory overload of sights, sounds, and smells.

The market offered a wide array of goods, from fresh fruits and vegetables to handmade crafts and local delicacies. I sampled some imo-ten (sweet potato tempura) and hiyashi ame (a chilled sweet ginger drink), both local specialties. I even struck up a conversation with an elderly woman selling her homemade sushi and pickles, learning about her family's history in the region.

The Kochi Sunday Market is more than just a place to shop; it's a social gathering spot where locals and visitors alike can experience the authentic regional culture. The bustling atmosphere and the friendly vendors made it a truly memorable experience. I picked up a few souvenirs for the kids, including some Tosa cutlery and a small bonsai tree. I am sure Ethan will love that!

Minami-Shinmachi Shopping Street: Modern Delights

After the traditional charm of the Sunday Market, I decided to explore the Minami-Shinmachi Shopping Street. This modern shopping arcade offered a different perspective on Kochi's local life, with a mix of boutiques, restaurants, and supermarkets.

I wandered through the arcade, browsing the shops and soaking in the atmosphere. I found a local craft beer shop, a welcome sight after a day of exploring, and picked up a few bottles to enjoy later. The shopping street was a great place to find unique souvenirs and experience the contemporary side of Kochi.

A Culinary Journey: Lunch and Dinner

For lunch, I stopped at Osusowake Shokudo Mado, a charming restaurant known for its authentic Japanese flavors. The name Osusowake means to share something with others, and the restaurant embodies this spirit by using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. I had a delicious rice bowl with seasonal vegetables and perfectly cooked fish. The warm hospitality of the staff made the experience even more enjoyable.

As evening approached, I made my way to Hakkenden Nankoku Osone for dinner. This traditional izakaya (Japanese pub) is known for its authentic yakitori and lively atmosphere. I ordered a selection of grilled chicken skewers, each perfectly seasoned and cooked over charcoal. The izakaya was filled with locals, creating a vibrant and convivial atmosphere. I even tried some local sake, which paired perfectly with the yakitori.

Reflections on Kochi and Anticipation for Tomorrow

As I sit here reflecting on the day, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences I've had in Kochi. From the historical grandeur of Kochi Castle to the vibrant energy of the Sunday Market and the culinary delights of the local restaurants, this city has truly captured my heart. I am so happy I decided to come here, it is such an authentic experience. I can't wait to share all these stories with Aisha and Ethan.

Tomorrow, I'm planning to explore the natural beauty of Shikoku, with a visit to Umpenji Temple and Ōboke Gorge [if it doesn't rain]. I'm looking forward to another day of adventure and discovery, and I'm excited to see what hidden gems Shikoku has in store for me. I might even treat myself to a drink at Bar Rokudenashi in the evening!

Until then, cheers from Kochi!
