A Day of Artistic Wonders and Coastal Beauty

Another day, another adventure unfolds here on Shikoku Island! I'm continually amazed by the sheer diversity of experiences this island offers. Today was a blend of artistic immersion and breathtaking scenery, a combination that perfectly encapsulates the charm of Shikoku. Join me as I recount our explorations, filled with masterpieces, panoramic views, and, of course, delicious food.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Yoronotaki Gomenten. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, which fueled me up perfectly for the day ahead. After breakfast, we made our way to the Otsuka Museum of Art.

Otsuka Museum of Art: A Journey Through Western Art History

The Otsuka Museum of Art is unlike any art museum I've ever visited. It houses over 1,000 full-size ceramic reproductions of Western masterpieces. From ancient murals to modern masterpieces, the museum takes you on a comprehensive journey through art history.

Walking through the museum, I was struck by the sheer scale of the reproductions. The Sistine Chapel ceiling, recreated in its entirety, was awe-inspiring. Being able to get up close to these works, without the usual barriers and restrictions, was a unique and enriching experience. It felt like stepping into the art itself. Aisha, ever the art enthusiast, was particularly captivated by the Impressionist collection, spending a good hour admiring Monet's water lilies. I was personally drawn to the Baroque section, where the dramatic use of light and shadow in Rembrandt's portraits resonated deeply with me. It reminded me of the times I'd try to emulate those techniques in my photography back in Barbados, using the strong Caribbean sunlight to my advantage.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

The museum itself is located in Naruto Park, offering stunning views of the Seto Inland Sea. Even the architecture of the museum complements the art within, creating a harmonious blend of culture and nature. We spent a good four hours exploring the museum, and even that felt like a whirlwind tour. It’s a place where you could easily spend an entire day and still discover something new.

After our artistic immersion, we were ready for lunch. We headed to Restaurant&Cafe Riina, a charming spot known for its local Ehime cuisine. I decided to try their Imabari Yakibuta Tamago Meshi (grilled pork and egg rice bowl), a local specialty. The sweet and savory flavors were a delight, and the portion was generous enough to satisfy our post-museum hunger. Aisha opted for a seafood pasta, praising the freshness of the ingredients.

With our bellies full, we set off for the Kurushima Strait Observatory. Located in Imabari, this observatory offers panoramic views of the Kurushima Strait and the impressive Kurushima-Kaikyo Bridge.

The bridge itself is a marvel of engineering, the world's longest suspension bridge structure. From the observatory, we could see the bridge stretching across the strait, connecting Shikoku to Honshu. The views were simply breathtaking, with the blue waters of the Seto Inland Sea dotted with lush green islands. I tried to capture the scene with my camera, but no photograph could truly do justice to the beauty of the landscape.

We spent a good hour at the observatory, simply soaking in the views and enjoying the cool sea breeze. There's something incredibly calming about watching the ships sail through the strait, framed by the majestic bridge. It’s a perfect spot for contemplation and appreciation of the natural world.

As evening approached, we made our way to Bar Salvador in Kochi. This bar is known for its vibrant atmosphere, delicious pizza, and excellent curry. It was the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploration. The bar had a lively jazz session, which added to the fun atmosphere. I enjoyed a glass of local sake while Aisha savored their famous pizza. The combination of good music, good food, and good company made for a memorable evening.

For dinner, we decided to try Okamura, an Izakaya in Takamatsu. Explore the authentic izakaya experience at Okamura in Nankoku, Kochi—where tradition meets flavor in every dish.

I was keen to try some authentic Japanese cuisine, and this place did not disappoint. The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, and the staff were incredibly friendly. We ordered a selection of small dishes, including grilled fish, tempura, and local vegetables. Each dish was prepared with care and attention to detail, showcasing the fresh, seasonal ingredients. It was a true culinary delight, and a perfect way to end our day.

Tomorrow, we're heading to Kochi Castle and the Kochi Sunday Market. I'm excited to explore more of Kochi's history and culture, and to sample the local produce at the market. I've heard great things about the Katsuo Tataki (seared skipjack tuna), a Kochi specialty , and I'm eager to try it for myself. Plus, we might sneak in some time at Minami-Shinmachi Shopping Street.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and culture of Shikoku Island. It's a place that truly nourishes the soul, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. I'm also grateful for my friends, who make every experience even more special. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love to travel, and why I love to share my experiences with you all.

Until tomorrow, safe travels and happy exploring!
