High Views and Ancient Crossings
Today was a day of contrasts, from soaring high above Tokushima city to stepping back in time in the Iya Valley. Shikoku continues to surprise and delight, offering a blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage that’s truly captivating. I'm loving this spontaneous adventure with my friends, and the flexibility of not having pre-booked accommodations has allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in the local culture.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Munagin in Tokushima. I opted for their famous unagi, grilled eel, which was absolutely delicious. The perfect start to fuel a day of exploring. Aisha would have loved this place, she appreciates a good meal with traditional flavors. I made a mental note to try and recreate this dish when I get back home to Toronto. After breakfast, we headed straight for the Bizan Ropeway.
The Bizan Ropeway, ascending Mount Bizan, promised panoramic views of Tokushima City and the surrounding landscapes. The base of the ropeway was easy to find, located on the 5th floor of the Awa Dance Hall. As we glided upwards, the city unfolded beneath us, a tapestry of buildings and green spaces stretching towards the Seto Inland Sea. The views were truly breathtaking, offering a unique perspective on the city's layout and its natural surroundings. It was a clear day, so we could see quite far. The ride itself was smooth and comfortable, and I couldn’t resist snapping photos at every angle. I can see why it's considered a symbol of the city.
At the summit, we took our time to soak in the scenery. There's something about seeing a city from above that gives you a sense of perspective and appreciation. The air was fresh and clean, a welcome change from the city bustle. I imagined Aisha and Ethan enjoying this view with me, pointing out landmarks and sharing stories. It’s moments like these that make me miss them, but also motivate me to bring back tales and photos to share.

Travel is about the gorgeous feeling of teetering in the unknown.
After descending from Mount Bizan, we grabbed a quick lunch at Eki-mae Shokudo. This charming restaurant in Otoyo is known for its authentic Japanese regional cuisine. I had a comforting bowl of ramen, while my friends tried some local specialties. The food was simple but delicious, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It was a great spot to refuel before our next adventure. I always appreciate finding these little local gems. This place was more than just a restaurant; it was a taste of authentic Japanese culture.
With our bellies full, we set off for the Iya Valley, home to the famous Vine Bridge. The drive itself was an experience, winding through lush mountain roads and past quaint villages. The remoteness of the Iya Valley is part of its charm, offering a glimpse into a more traditional way of life. As we approached the bridge, I could feel a sense of anticipation building. The Iya Valley has a rich history, with legends claiming the vine bridges were first constructed either by Kobo Daishi, a Buddhist monk, or by the defeated Heike soldiers who were looking for refuge in the valley after the Genpei War.
The Vine Bridge, or Iya Kazurabashi, is a suspension bridge made of woven vines, stretching 45 meters across the Iya River. As I stepped onto the bridge, I could feel it sway gently beneath my feet. The gaps between the planks offered an unsettling view of the water 14 meters below. Despite the steel cables hidden within the vines for safety, it still felt like a daring feat to cross. The bridge is rebuilt every three years, maintaining its historical significance.

Crossing the bridge was an exhilarating experience. The combination of the swaying bridge, the rushing river below, and the stunning natural surroundings created a sense of adventure and awe. I couldn’t help but imagine what it must have been like to cross this bridge centuries ago, relying solely on the strength of the vines. It was a tangible connection to the past, a reminder of the ingenuity and resilience of the people who once called this valley home. I was really careful crossing the bridge, I made sure to hold on tight. The views from the center of the bridge were simply amazing. The lush greenery of the valley, the crystal-clear river, and the sense of history all combined to create a truly unforgettable moment. It's easy to see why this is one of Shikoku's most iconic attractions.
After our time at the Vine Bridge, we stopped by Island Mishima. I picked up some Imabari towels, known for their softness and high quality. These will make great gifts for Aisha and Ethan, a little piece of Shikoku to bring back home.

For dinner, we decided to try Osusowake Shokudo Mado. This restaurant in Kami, Kochi, is known for its authentic Japanese flavors and commitment to local ingredients. The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, and the staff were incredibly friendly. I opted for a set meal featuring local fish and seasonal vegetables. The flavors were fresh and vibrant, a true reflection of the region’s culinary heritage. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with exploration and adventure. It was great to discover that 'Osusowake' means sharing something with warmth, which is exactly what the restaurant's atmosphere conveyed.

As the day drew to a close, I reflected on our adventures. From the heights of Mount Bizan to the depths of the Iya Valley, Shikoku had once again exceeded my expectations. The blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and local flavors made for an unforgettable experience. I am looking forward to what tomorrow brings.
Tomorrow, we’re planning to visit Dragon Rock and Yokai House. I’ve heard great things about both, and I’m excited to see what they have to offer. Dragon Rock is supposed to have a great view and the Yokai House sounds like a fun and quirky experience. I'm also hoping to find some time to relax and enjoy the local nightlife, maybe check out Bar Rokudenashi. I'm really glad I decided to come to Shikoku with my friends. It's been an amazing experience so far, and I can't wait to see what else this island has in store for us.
