Island Time: History, Views, and Delicious Bites

Today was a day of immersing ourselves in the heart of Barbados, a journey that took us from the historical depths of a Jacobean mansion to the breathtaking heights of scenic overlooks, all while savoring the authentic flavors of Bajan cuisine. It was a day filled with family, laughter, and a deeper connection to my roots.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Baobab Kitchen. Aisha and Ethan were eager to try some traditional Bajan breakfast dishes, and I was happy to guide them through the menu. I opted for the saltfish and ackee, a personal favorite that always brings back fond memories of growing up in Speightstown. Aisha chose the Bajan breakfast, while Ethan, ever adventurous, went for the fish cakes. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all drawn in by the promise of authentic Caribbean flavors. It’s always a good sign when a place is popular with the locals, a sure indicator of quality and authenticity.

After breakfast, we set off for St. Nicholas Abbey and Steam Railway. The drive itself was a treat, with the lush Barbadian countryside unfolding before us. As we approached the Abbey, the grandeur of the Jacobean mansion was immediately striking. It’s one of only three genuine Jacobean mansions in the Western Hemisphere, a testament to the island's rich history. We decided to take the full tour, which included a ride on the St. Nicholas Abbey Heritage Railway. The train is a replica of one that used to run around Barbados, and Ethan was absolutely thrilled. The conductor, Shaun, and the fireman were fantastic, sharing stories about the history of the train line and the Abbey itself. The ride took us through the plantation fields, woodlands, and up to Cherry Tree Hill, offering spectacular views of the Atlantic coast.

Sometimes, the best journeys are those that take you back to where you began, reminding you of the beauty and history that shaped you.

At Cherry Tree Hill Reserve, the panoramic view was simply breathtaking. From 850 feet above sea level, we could see the rugged Scotland District and the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. There were a few local vendors selling crafts and souvenirs, and Aisha picked up a beautiful hand-woven basket. Ethan, of course, was more interested in the wild monkeys that roamed the area, chattering and playing in the trees. The cool breeze and stunning scenery made it the perfect spot for a family photo.

After taking in the views, we headed back to St. Nicholas Abbey for a tour of the Great House and the rum distillery. The house is beautifully restored, with period furniture and artifacts that offer a glimpse into 18th-century plantation life. I found myself particularly drawn to the old maps of Barbados, tracing the familiar coastline and remembering stories my grandfather used to tell me about growing up on the island. The rum distillery was equally fascinating, and we learned about the process of making St. Nicholas Abbey Rum, which Simon, the presenter, claimed to be the best in the world. Of course, we couldn't leave without doing a tasting. The rum was smooth and rich, with a hint of spice that lingered on the palate. I bought a bottle to take back to Toronto, a little taste of Barbados to share with friends.

Next on our list was Earthworks Pottery. I'd heard so much about this place, and I was eager to see it for myself. Founded by Goldie Spieler in the mid-70s, Earthworks Pottery is known for its unique, hand-crafted ceramics. The studio is located on a breezy hillside, with mosaic-tiled walls and wide-open windows that offer stunning views of the St. George valley. We took a tour of the pottery and watched the artisans at work, shaping and decorating the clay with incredible skill. The pottery is not only beautiful but also functional, being food-safe, dishwasher, and microwave-safe. Aisha and I spent ages browsing the showroom, admiring the colorful patterns and designs. We ended up buying a set of mugs and a serving bowl, each piece a little work of art that will remind us of our time in Barbados. Ethan even got to try his hand at the potter's wheel, creating a rather wobbly but charming little bowl.

For lunch, we drove to Catch-22, a restaurant located on a cliff in St. Lucy. The view was absolutely stunning, with the waves crashing against the rocks below. We started with the lionfish ceviche, a local delicacy that was both refreshing and flavorful. I opted for the catch of the day, grilled to perfection and served with a side of rice and peas. Aisha had the Island Conch Fritters, while Ethan, predictably, went for the Captain's Fish Burger. The food was delicious, and the service was warm and attentive. It was the perfect spot to relax and soak in the natural beauty of Barbados.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Paul Owens At The Beach House for dinner. Paul Owens is a renowned chef who spent over 25 years as the head chef at The Cliff Restaurant, and his new restaurant is quickly gaining a reputation for its exquisite cuisine. The restaurant is located on the west coast boardwalk, offering stunning oceanfront dining. We started with the snow crab cake and the tuna tartare, both beautifully plated and bursting with flavor. For our main courses, Aisha chose the pan-roasted red snapper, while I went for the roast loin of lamb. The dishes were expertly prepared, with a perfect balance of flavors and textures. The extensive wine list and attentive service added to the overall experience, making it a truly unforgettable evening.

As we drove back to our family's home, I reflected on the day. It had been a day of contrasts, from the historical grandeur of St. Nicholas Abbey to the natural beauty of Cherry Tree Hill. We had savored the flavors of Bajan cuisine, from the traditional saltfish and ackee to the exquisite dishes at Paul Owens At The Beach House. Most importantly, it had been a day spent with my family, connecting with our roots and creating memories that will last a lifetime. Tomorrow, we are planning to visit George Washington House and the Barbados Museum & Historical Society. It will be another day of exploring the rich history and culture of this beautiful island. I’m also hoping we get a chance to stop by De Thirsty Lizard for a nightcap.

We are also mindful of the We Gatherin' event that will be held in St. James throughout September. Perhaps we'll have the opportunity to partake in some of the festivities before our trip comes to an end.

As I drift off to sleep, I can still taste the rum, feel the cool breeze on my face, and hear the laughter of my family. Barbados, you have captured my heart once again.
