A Day of Discovery and Delight

Today was a day of immersing ourselves in the natural beauty of Barbados. With Aisha and Ethan by my side, we set out to explore Farley Hill National Park and Welchman Hall Gully, two locations that promised a blend of history, nature, and tranquility. I was excited to share these experiences with my family, reconnecting with my Bajan roots and creating lasting memories.

Our day began with a hearty Bajan breakfast at Cafe Bar Carizma in Chattel Village. Aisha had been raving about their breakfast for days, and it certainly lived up to the hype. The cafe was nestled among vibrant chattel houses, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. I opted for the traditional Bajan breakfast of saltfish and bakes, while Aisha enjoyed a plate of eggs and toast, and Ethan devoured a stack of pancakes. The food was delicious, and the service was warm and friendly, making it the perfect start to our day.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found in the simplest of moments, surrounded by the people you love.

After breakfast, we drove to Farley Hill National Park. As we approached, the grand entrance hinted at the park's storied past. Once a magnificent plantation house, Farley Hill now stands as a poignant ruin, a testament to time and history. Ethan was immediately captivated by the towering trees and the panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. We spent a while wandering through the park, imagining what life must have been like in its heyday. The park exuded a sense of serenity, despite its turbulent history. There didn't seem to be any specific events happening today, but the park itself was event enough.

Next on our itinerary was Welchman Hall Gully, a short drive from Farley Hill. This natural gully is a unique ecosystem, teeming with lush vegetation and wildlife. As we entered, we were immediately enveloped by the cool, damp air and the sounds of nature. Towering trees formed a canopy overhead, filtering the sunlight and creating a magical ambiance. Ethan was thrilled to spot several green monkeys frolicking in the trees. They were playful and curious, adding an element of excitement to our walk. Aisha, ever the nature enthusiast, pointed out various plant species, sharing her knowledge of their medicinal properties. The gully felt like a hidden world, a secret garden tucked away in the heart of Barbados.

For lunch, we headed to Round House in Bathsheba. The drive along the east coast was breathtaking, with dramatic cliffs and crashing waves. Round House is perched on a hilltop, offering stunning views of the Soup Bowl, a famous surfing spot. The restaurant had a laid-back, rustic charm, and we were immediately greeted with warm Bajan hospitality. I ordered the catch of the day, grilled mahi-mahi, while Aisha opted for the flying fish sandwich, and Ethan chose a burger. The food was delicious, and the view was simply unbeatable.

In the late afternoon, as the sun began to dip towards the horizon, we decided to embrace the Bajan tradition of visiting a rum shop. We made our way to Judy's Watering Hole Rum Shop in St. Thomas. This wasn't just a bar; it was a cultural institution, a place where locals and tourists alike gathered to share stories, laughter, and, of course, rum. Judy, the owner, welcomed us with open arms, and we immediately felt like part of the community. I sampled a local rum punch, while Aisha enjoyed a refreshing Banks beer, and Ethan sipped on a fruit punch. The atmosphere was lively and convivial, and we spent a couple of hours chatting with the locals, learning about their lives and experiences. It was a truly authentic Bajan experience, one that I'll cherish forever.

Barbados is more than just a destination; it's a feeling, a connection to something deeper, a sense of belonging.

For dinner, we decided to indulge in a fine dining experience at The Tides Barbados in Holetown. This restaurant is renowned for its exquisite cuisine and stunning oceanfront setting. As we arrived, we were greeted by the gentle sound of waves and the soft glow of candlelight. The ambiance was elegant and romantic, perfect for a special evening. We started with appetizers of lobster risotto and tuna tartare, followed by entrees of Caribbean lobster tails and grilled swordfish. Each dish was a work of art, both visually and gastronomically. The service was impeccable, and the overall experience was simply unforgettable.

As the day drew to a close, I reflected on the incredible experiences we had shared as a family. From the lush landscapes of Farley Hill and Welchman Hall Gully to the authentic Bajan flavors of Cafe Bar Carizma and Judy's Watering Hole, and the elegant dining experience at The Tides, today had been a true celebration of Barbados. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to reconnect with my roots and share these experiences with Aisha and Ethan. As we drove back to our accommodation, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement for what tomorrow would bring. We're planning to visit St. Nicholas Abbey and Steam Railway, followed by Cherry Tree Hill Reserve. I'm particularly looking forward to showing Ethan St. Nicholas Abbey, a beautifully preserved plantation house that offers a glimpse into Barbados' colonial past. And perhaps a stop at Earthworks Pottery.

Tomorrow promises more adventure, more discovery, and more opportunities to create lasting memories. Until then, I bid you goodnight from beautiful Barbados.
