A Day of Discovery and Delight

Today was a day of immersing ourselves in the rich tapestry of Barbadian history and indulging in the local culinary scene. It's amazing how much you can learn and experience in a single day, and I'm excited to share our adventures with you all.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Caf'e A La Mer. Aisha and Ethan were particularly excited, as they had read some great reviews online. I opted for a traditional Bajan breakfast, while Aisha chose the grilled blue marlin. Ethan, predictably, went for the apple pie. The food was wonderful, and the chef/owner was super helpful in recommending dishes and very caring of all his customers. It felt like dining at a home away from home.

With our bellies full, we set off to explore the George Washington House. As a Bajan who has been living in Canada for quite some time, I was particularly interested in seeing this piece of shared history between Barbados and the United States. It’s quite remarkable that the only house George Washington ever lived in outside of colonial America is right here in Barbados.

The house itself is a beautifully preserved 18th-century home. We started on the ground floor, where the rooms are furnished in the style of the 1750s. Ethan was fascinated by the old medical instruments and the explanation of how they filtered and cooled water back in the day. Aisha was intrigued by the exhibit on slavery and how it shaped Barbadian society. Wandering around the house, surrounded by well-maintained gardens, was like journeying back in time.

History is not a burden on the memory but an illumination of the soul.

After the George Washington House, we headed to the Barbados Museum & Historical Society. Housed in 19th-century military prison buildings, the museum offered a comprehensive look at the island's natural, social, and military history. Ethan was captivated by the exhibits on Barbadian military history, while Aisha was drawn to the displays of colonial-era artifacts. I was personally moved by the collection of old maps and photographs, which painted a vivid picture of Barbados through the centuries. It's amazing how much history is packed into this small island.

For lunch, we decided to try the Cottage Bar & Grill. Ronaldo greeted us at the front door and from that point on we had a wonderful experience. The restaurant is perched on a hill in Orange Cottage St Joseph overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The restaurant had a very quaint atmosphere. The views were amazing. The shrimp breadfruit bowl was awesome. The limeonade was so refreshing.

After a day filled with historical insights, we were ready to unwind. Before dinner, we stopped by De Thirsty Lizard for a drink. This bar is a hidden gem with a great atmosphere. It’s a popular gathering spot for locals and tourists alike, providing an authentic Barbadian experience. The food is outstanding, especially their fish cakes, and the cocktails are impressive. The staff may not have been as interactive, possibly due to the high volume of customers. However, the overall customer service is top-notch, with Royann being a delightful host. I tried a local rum cocktail, while Aisha enjoyed a refreshing fruit punch. Ethan, of course, stuck to his usual – a Shirley Temple.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to The Cliff for dinner. This restaurant is renowned as one of the best on Barbados. The restaurant has stunning views, a wonderful atmosphere, and beautiful attention to detail. The service was first class, friendly & efficient. The food was delicious. We opted for Snow Crab fishcake for starters, and our friend ordered Confit of duck, all amazing. I chose the parmesan crusted barracuda, which was freshly caught. Aisha went with the roasted duck breasts with morels and truffled onions. Ethan, feeling adventurous, tried the Thai Green Curry Prawns.

The Cliff is an expensive restaurant. However, it is one of the finest on Barbados. The views out over the illuminated Caribbean were amazing. The real fire torches burning away added a certain warmth to the sumptuous surroundings, even though it was a balmy evening. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.

Tomorrow, we’re planning to explore the natural beauty of Barbados with visits to Hunte's Gardens and Flower Forest Botanical Gardens. I am especially looking forward to Hunte's Gardens, as I have heard it is a truly magical place. We'll also grab lunch at JuJu's Beach bar and dinner at Lone Star Restaurant & Hotel. And maybe do some shopping at Limegrove Lifestyle Centre. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!

It’s moments like these, sharing experiences with my family and reconnecting with my roots, that make travel so worthwhile. Until tomorrow, keep exploring!
